  1. No 'Cellar Door' LP set? Some really good stuff coming up though - especially the Nelson, Jazz Crusaders and the Tolliver.
  2. That ploy certainly worked on me. I think I bought 'Bitches Brew' back in about '74 after seeing that great Mati Klarwein cover in the racks and being totally intrigued. Found the music totally bemusing at first listen but it's greatness was apparent from first spin. Miles certainly has a huge profile with the media. Check out BBC4, who regularly run an animated trailer promoting their arts coverage. Very prominent in this is a snippet of Miles film taken from the Robert Herridge TV show recorded with Gil Evans. Even 10-15 years ago, the prominence of such a jazz figure would have been most improbable. For many of the UK public, jazz these days equates to Miles (and to a lesser extent I guess with Coltrane), just as it already did to Louis and the Duke. Totally justified, in my opinion.
  3. Anita O'Day, preceded by the Basie 'Live' LP set I think (or was it the Caiman Farlow? )
  4. A wise purchase ! Just spinning the Miles & Gil LP set - the 'Porgy & Bess' and 'Quiet Nights' sessions.
  5. I was thinking of Dodo Mosaic (for OOP LP sets only) but Buster (as in 'wallet buster') gets the vote..
  6. I pay about £0.95 a litre for diesel, which works out over £4 or $10 ( ) a gallon. It's extortionate and even though I get better than 50 miles to the gallon it certainly adds up, even though I run a fairly compact diesel hatchback. On my recent trip to the US I was stunned when the bill for the week for fuel came in less than about $30, even with a hopelessly gas-guzzling Ford Mustang. The US has it good ! Of course we have been here before - the prices in the early 1980s were just as bad, relative to income. It's just that gas has been very cheap in general over the period 1985-2005, a situation which (in the longer term) was only a temporary one.
  7. Steve Kuhn 'Watch What Happens' (MPS/BASF German original) The Jazz Crusaders ''The Young Rabbits' (Blue Note twofer - another great Lourie/Cuscuna pre-Mosaic production )
  8. The new Mosaic catalogue arrived here today and the Jazz Crusaders set is heavily featured ( ). I was wondering about this set as I haven't had a Mosaic invoice letter yet for my pre-order, which I was assuming should have arrived if the set is in the new catalogue. Maybe I need to send them an email just in case my pre-order got lost in the wash. Looks like a really great set !
  9. Wow - never even heard of that particular Fontana.
  10. My gut feel is that it is probably OK for a few weeks. Most important consideration I guess is that they are not stored near sources of damp and local heat. I know the problem with the Mosaic box storage issue. No sooner does one have things sorted nicely than more boxes need storing, resulting in not-so-critical LPs being moved upstairs to free up some space etc. There's always the option of moving the boys out..
  11. The ones I have seen in the US seem to be around the $65 to $70 mark. Yet to see one here in the shops in the UK. Scott was selling some 'promo' copies recently for $30. That was the best price I have seen.
  12. One? Aren't there like four good things about the Tina Brooks Mosaic? ← Indeed ! - Time to open up this box once more and enjoy. Still can't find the damn King pressing. Jeez - I need to hire that elf librarian assistant pronto before this gets out of hand ( ).
  13. I've got a Hi Fi Jazz of this one. Love the cover - very fine album. Subsequently reissued on Contemporary just like the Elmo Hope Trio, I believe.
  14. I think it does. I can't actually find it at present though, although it is in there in the racks somewhere hiding away. Really must do some filing on the Blue Notes. The really good thing about the Tina Brooks Mosaic is that at least you can always find it ( ).
  15. Makes the LP set look like an absolute bargain !
  16. Wardell Gray 'Central Avenue' (Prestige 2LP reissue set) Dexter Gordon 'A Swingin' Affair' (BN NY USA stereo) Herbie Hancock 'Maiden Voyage' (BN NY USA mono deepgroove edition) I have just put the latter through the VPI with super deep cleanser and the results have been pretty spectacular .
  17. Grachan Moncur III 'Evolution' (BN NY USA mono). Magnifico !
  18. Some more Blue Notes: Freddie Hubbard 'Hub Cap' (BN 47W63/NY USA mono) Hank Mobley 'A Caddy For Daddy' (NY USA stereo)
  19. Now that's truly crazy, when you can pick up the 2CD 'doubletime' at HMV for £5, which gives you most of the goodies..
