  1. The Chet Baker bio has an interesting section about Woody Shaw's final year - I think he returned from Rotterdam to his parents back in the NYC area for care and attention during the final stage of the illness.
  2. There's also a Sonny Simmons DVD documentary for sale, in which he reminisces at length.
  3. Tubby Hayes 'Tubbs in NY' (Fontana). Recorded with the Horace Parlan trio
  4. Well said ! I agree 110% with your comments on the JJ set. The music is a class act, like the man himself. A box not to miss.
  5. Just checking out the Duisburg discography, this one looks novel: CLARKE-BOLAND-SEXTETT 65-0925 Sahib Shihab (fl), Francy Boland (p), Jimmy Woode (b,voc), Kenny Clarke (dr), Fats Sadi (bongos, marimba, vibes), Joe Harris (perc), Alter Bahnhof, Rolandseck, (D) 25.9.1965 Invitation (4:35) CBS S 62681 Just Give Me Time (3:35) - Con Alma (4:55) - Serenata (3:20) - Sconsolato (2:35) - Yah, Yah (4:00) - BornTo Be Blue (3:35) - Insensatez (2:40) - Calypso Blues (4:05) - Balafon For Marcel Marceau (3:04) - ISSUES: entitled MARCEL MARCEAU präsentiert SWING IM BAHNHOF mit dem CLARKE-BOLAND-SEXTETT Clarke/Boland meets Marcel Marceau.. What's the story behind this one?
  6. Looks like the material on those CDs is not rare - from the Lps 'Volcano', 'At Her Majesty's Pleasure' and 'Off Limits', which are all fairly readily available.
  7. Yes, I think all of the DMMs originally came with that fold-out. I've still got about 20 of them ! Just looking at the CD, Ron McMaster did the digital transfer. Originally came out in 1988 I think, so one of the very early BN CD issues.
  8. I picked up French DMM vinyls of 'Far Away Lands' and 'The Rajah' when they came out here in England in the mid-80s (from nowhere - caused a bit of a stir in the jazz press of the time) and liked both of these from the outset. Both A1 'no bullshit' releases. Nothing very profound on 'Far Away Lands' but hugely enjoyable and I particularly like the grooving Walton/Carter/Higgins rhythm section. Just spinning the Collectors' Choice CD of this one.
  9. 'Harold McNair' (RCA) Terry Smith 'Fallout' (Philips)
  10. Not to add too much torture but I have quite a few of the Jazz Crusaders LPs on Japanese vinyl and the Mosaic set sounds pretty good in comparison (I think Ron McMaster has done a good job). So far I've spun CDs 1 and 2 and they flow very nicely indeed. The booklet also has a fine essay, with reminiscences from Stix Hooper, Joe Sample, Wilton Felder and Buster Williams. A real good-un'
  11. "Pee-Pants Clearwater Revival" This software has a pants fetish..
  12. I thought it might have been 'stonking' (which this album most likely is).
  13. I believe that Fresh Sound have also done a vinyl reissue of this Ronnell Bright LP. Paris Jazz Corner auctioned off an original a couple of years ago - not sure what it sold for.
  14. Just spinning CD1 of my Jazz Crusaders box (arrived yesterday). Sounds great ! The video was released here in the UK by TCB Publishing back in the 1980s. Not sure if it was ever issued in the US. Not easy to get hold of - the occasional 2nd hand copies do appear in UK shops.
  15. Yes, those deep groove Argos can sound pretty nice. I'm similarly impressed with the original Ramsey Lewis 'In Crowd'. Can be had for not too much money too, usually.
  16. Could never work out why the guys at Mosaic didn't put that one out on vinyl. They jumped straight from BB to the Blackhawk set, for some reason.
  17. These would be the sort who would introduce Wayne as an 'act'
  18. There's at least 2 of us. I even like the later stuff ( ). I'll put on the Japanese Sony 'Agharta' 2LP later tonight for relaxing pre-bedtime listening with my hot chocolate ( ). Sonny Fortune absolutely smokes on side 1.
