  1. O heck, they are scattered right through the 20-odd LPs. . It looks like a pretty good sampler of the Nat Cole Mosaic so - if you like Nat - go for it !
  2. A rat ran under my car a couple of days ago and somehow missed the wheel. I live in a rural UK area backing onto native woodland and see them quite often (indeed I've spotted the occasional rat, shrew, vole and mouse in my garden). They are quite harmless as these are the wild species. The local cats do the work of keeping them in check. I just make sure that all potential entry points into the home are kept sealed. The only instance I've had of one getting in was a vole some years ago and I gave up trying to catch it. After a few days the poor critter was found dead on the floor of the study.
  3. I've checked the Mosaic booklet and all of this material looks to be included.
  4. Mal Waldron 'Sweet Love, Bitter' soundtrack (Impulse, mono)
  5. Is there not a story that we are never, on average, more than 10 feet away from one of them (whether in sewer, basement etc.) ?
  6. About 20 degrees and sunny clear blue skies here today. For mid October this is very mild indeed.
  7. I'll report back when I receive the boxes. Fingers crossed.
  8. Tubby Hayes 'Return Visit' (Fontana stereo). With 'Jimmy Gloomy' and RRK
  9. I was thinking of the two Grolnick albums compiled on the 'Complete Blue Note' doubletime CD set ('Weaver of Dreams' and 'Nightown'). Very different musical styles but theres something about the fierce sense of purpose and - I guess - lack of recognition/limited recording opportunities as leaders that these two composer/arrangers share.
  10. I wish - Just the 30 at $100 a pop unfortunately. Incredible !
  11. I've gone for the Farmer/Golson, Basie and Eldridge. I was planning to hold out for caiman on these but with £6 shipping for the whole lot to UK and no tax to pay, this is a great deal.
  12. Thanks Alfred . These guys have even undercut caiman. £40 for the Farmer/Golson is less than half the price seen in UK stores such as HMV. 'Fill your boots' time.
  13. Don't wanna spoil your fun, but Bach himself reported March 21, 1685. As the reformed Gregorian calendar was introduced only in 1701 in Germany, this date would have to be corrected to March 31 (!), 1685 to fit into our modern calendar - but this never was acknowledged widely to irrational reasons. ← Damn ! Looks like I've got some bum information. Zippo then
  14. I hope Big Al comes back to the site soon - and Africa Brass too.
  15. One of my favourites when I'm over in Deutschland.

A bit of yellow around the mike on couw's piccie although the one I've posted does have some yellowing ageing I guess.
  17. But you are early.. Those are interesting thoughts about the evolving nature of the compositions. Some of these pieces remind me of 50s Teddy Charles and (oddly maybe?) the Blue Note Don Grolnicks. I'm just really getting into this album on the vinyl and hope to post some further impressions during the week.

Here's a better picture of that rare Don Rendell EP on Tempo:
  19. Great ! I recall Larry mentioning that it was Lester Koenig's son John sat in the front of the car pictured on the cover.
  20. Vic Lewis 'Plays Bossa Nova At Home and Away' (HMV stereo). Some great Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott with a London band on side 1. Side 2 has an equally stellar LA lineup with Shorty Rogers, Jack Sheldon and Bud Shank. A bossa nova theme album that actually works.
  21. Originally released on Contemporary in 1956, this was Tatro's only session as leader with an all-star West Coast lineup. It has one of the coolest cover designs ever: The album, featuring very progressive arrangements for the time (and building on some of the concepts from 'Birth of the Cool'), has been reissued by Fantasy under the 'OJC' imprint. Scott Yanow's review on AllMusic almost deserves a thread of its own. Quote: 'This CD reissue has composer Duane Tatro's only album as a leader, and it is easy to hear why his services were not more in demand. Tatro's 11 originals have overarranged ensembles, plenty of humorless dissonance, and not much solo space for the members of his octet. In other words, the music is rather dry and dull. Despite the presence of trumpeter Stu Williamson, altoist Lennie Niehaus, Bill Holman on tenor and baritonist Jimmy Giuffre, very little of interest occurs, making this a badly dated effort.
