  1. I saw Ingrid Laubrook's Quintet recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. Second the positive comments on 'Forensic' - the tunes from this are worth checking out. First half of the show was a trio showing her Brazilian side. Second half of the show was the quintet. And big kudos to her for enthusiastically touring the UK with this and the F-IRE Collective shows, 100% commitment to getting the music out there.
  2. Alfred Anderson was featured on a BBC TV documentary only very recently and fortunately they interviewed him (and several other British survivors of the WW1 trenches - now down to single figures). With his death we are now within a whisker of losing the last living link to this monumental tragedy. A sobering thought, as for as long as I can remember the 'veterans' were a regular and visible presence in our society.
  3. RIP. I was fortunate to hear him live once and he was an excellent player. Also enjoyed his playing on the Duane Tatro LP that I've been listening to of late.
  4. Already up for listening on the BBC is a broadcast of 'The Verb', recorded in the Purcell Room of the RFH last Thursday. A nice 'warm up' hour before the Wilson concert, this features a very nice Norma Winstone vocal in duet with pianist Gareth Williams plus nice playing from Stan Sultzmann and a spoken record review of 'In A Silent Way' by John Walters. The Verb
  5. Good to hear that at least one of the shows was a sellout, Phil. I'm still very saddened though that Gerald didn't get a half-way decent attendance on the Thursday. There's no excuses, either..
  6. Sorry to miss the Kurt Elling - In the end I didn't head back into London, having been exhausted getting back from the Gerald Wilson.
  7. Never heard of him ! where can I buy it?
  8. The Art Pepper was a recent addition for me and sounds wonderful ! Recommend the Hank Mobley too but its a $$$ hit.. Also another for the Hodges 51-55 set. I just wish they'd done a vinyl on the second Hodges set too.
  9. Kenny Dorham 'Trompeta Toccata' (BN NY USA mono) Neil Ardley/Mike Gibbs/Stan Tracey/Ian Carr et al 'Will Power' (Argo 2LP)
  10. James Hendricks Cass Elliott Tim Rose ← Pete Rose Conrad Black Edmund Blackadder III
  11. Of peripheral interest - this month's Jazz Journal International has a good interview with Leroy Williams in which he mentions gigging in NYC with Big John (and recording 'Accent On The Blues') prior to the steady gigs with Barry Harris.
  12. Yes, I have only heard his version of 'Ride of the Valkyries' once on the car radio but the effect was such that I nearly crashed the car..
  13. They did a short 'spot' on Jools Holland's 'Later' TV show a couple of months back - unfortunately it was a bit on the short side and they seemed a bit 'fazed' by the big occasion. Their spot at the Bath Fest was good though. Leading lights of the band are Pete Wareham and Seb Rochford - all members are also part of the F-IRE Collective. Definite punk influence to the music and its presentation.
  14. More nuggets: Clarke Boland/Stan Getz 'Change of Scenes' (UK Verve stereo) Freddie Roach 'Mo' Greens Please' (BN NY USA mono DG both sides ) Leo Parker ''Let Me Tell You 'Bout It' (BN NY USA mono)
  15. For sure, the 'Innovations Orchestra' doublitime CDs are a keeper.. Maybe you should play the Mrs a bit of 'Kenton/Wagner' at fortissimo..
  16. Duke Pearson 'Sweet Honey Bee' (BN Liberty mono)
  17. Horatio Nelson Horatio Hornblower Horace Silver
  18. A for the Kid Ory set. I was a bit 'on the fence' on this one, New Orleans Jazz being a bit of a peripheral taste for me. I shouldn't have worried though. There is much good music, period, on this set - beautifully recorded and remastered. Indeed the sound quality is quite astonishing. It's a real pleasure to hear the relaxed swing of these guys caught in extended performance, with the infectious Ory tailgate sound prominent but not OTT. Added bonus is a nice booklet with some very cool photography work by Ray Avery - his photos seem to really capture the essence of Ory the person. And again I ask - have Mosaic ever done a 'bum' set?
  19. A session of Hank Liberty: Hank Mobley 'Hi Voltage' (BN Liberty stereo) Hank Mobley 'Reach Out' (BN Liberty stereo)
  20. Thinks... I could set this lot rolling on Xmas eve and it would extend through Boxing Day on autopilot.
  21. Had a bit more time today to digest disk 3 and this one is FANTASTIC. It makes you wonder what else Charles has tucked away in the vaults gathering cobwebs. 'Earls World' and 'Repetition' are outstanding. Yes, let's hope that Mosaic and Strata East link up for more future ventures of this type. Looks promising !
