  1. For a live recording this sounds great, Potter is very soulful on this and Moran shines (I prefer him as a sideman than on his own records). Tempo wise its what you would expect from a recent Motian ECM release but has a nice warm NY 50's noir feel. I dig it.
  2. I would be all for that, I love what Tarantino has been doing with the latest remasters.
  3. I guess: Mingus at the Bohemia Pithecanhropus Erectus Black Saint and the Sinner Lady Black Saint is one I rarely play, its just so intense but it left such a huge impression on me I have to include it. It's hard to leave off anything live from 64 with Dolphy.
  4. Back when Soul Note/ Black Saint hit emusic before album pricing changes I downloaded a ton, I put together a comp for some friends. I left off George Lewis and George Russell due to time restrictions. Soul Note/Black Saint mix Disc 1: Around - 6:49 - Karl Berger - Around Calvary - 7:26 - Billy Harper - In Europe Lonely Woman - 9:59 - Geri Allen with Charlie Haden, Paul Motian - Etudes Intentions - 13:14 - George Adams-Don Pullen - Live At The Village Vanguard Strange Serenade - 7:05 - Andrew Hill - Strange Serenade One Time Out - 5:48 - Paul Motian - One Time Out Seagulls Of Kristiansund - 26:02 - Mal Waldron Quintet - The Seagulls Of Kristiansund Disc 2: Blue Chopsticks - 6:20 - Steve Lacy-Roswell Rudd - Regeneration Latin Genetics - Paul Bley - Memoirs 9 X 9 - 7:15 - Paul Motian - The Story Of Maryam Chimney Road - 6:53 - Karl Berger with Ed Blackwell, Dave Holland - Transit Croquet Ballet - 13:02 - Billy Harper - Black Saint Mist Flower - 15:29 - Andrew Hill - Strange Serenade Misterioso - 6:55 - Paul Motian Quintet - Misterioso
  5. Looking forward to hearing this one, the amount of great tunes Wayne wrote in the 60's boggles my mind. I know I would have a hard time figuring out what to leave out.
  6. The Casey Jones after Dark Star smokes on this, I am finding there a number of tunes on here I am burned out on are keeping my interest due to the energy and sequencing. This one is a must.
  7. I played the bonus disc today, Truckin>The Other One>Me and My Uncle>The Other One is fantastic. They just attack The Other One. Fans that like the Fall 73 period without Donna but wished it had more energy will love this one. This is one of my favorites from the R.T series.
  8. My copy of Road Trips Vol. 3, No. 2 from 11/15/71 was waiting for me when I got home last night. Went straight to Not Fade Away>Jam>Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad>Not Fade Away then to Disc 1 - Dark Star>El Paso>Jam>Casey Jones. Freaking awesome. Great energy and Keith is totally on. While not as great sounding as other RT's it still quite good, 71 is becoming one of my favorite years.
  9. I pre-ordered it, can't wait.
  10. Huh, I was expecting a song to be used too so it's a little different at least. I guess I just used up all my angst about rock and selling out some time ago. The old & old dead folks didn't have the advantage of living during a time when it became acceptable to immediately sell your songs to The Gap and whatever car co. that Wilco did with their Sky Blue Sky album. Then again, they didn't have to deal with "music should be free" when they started too. Well, that's what the hippies wanted, but that only worked for crashing concerts. edit - got a kick out of how the announcement was from 03/03, given the title. It's not so much the commercial it's more Sean's statement about keeping John in the public conscious. I doubt John would have cared and second he was one of the most famous people to have ever lived. However your right about the angst part, at this point I would be more surprised if a Who song doesn't become a truck commercial.

just came across an old Dollar Brand record for cheap in Capetown Fringe. Played it last night and dug it. Looking forward to picking up more titles by him.
  12. ^ I think he means the Bass player not the Trumpeter. I didn't know the trumpeter was in the collective, interesting. Need to check them out this year. For the bass player and back to the top post If you like the Avashi Cohen Piano trio record Gently Disturbed try Chick Corea's Past, Present & Futures which Avashi plays bass on. Maybe check out some other newish piano trio's like Danilo Perez and Brad Mehldau. If you liked Continuo and the Oud playing try Ahmed Abdul-Malik - Jazz Sounds of Africa. You might also want to check out Anouar Brahem who also plays the Oud, try Thimar and Astrakan Cafe.
  13. sigh.. riiiigght... "On Tuesday, Lennon's son, Sean Lennon, defended his mom while respecting his dad. Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "She did not do it for money. Has to do w hoping to keep dad in public consciousness. No new LPs, so TV ad is exposure to young."" http://www.spinner.com/2010/03/03/sean-lennon-yoko-ono/

yes, Chiaroscuro is a good one, nice to hear him on the 12 String on a few tracks on it. My all time favorite by him is Batik.
  15. The Soundway releases have good liners and packaging and filled with music so at least in the states where they are priced reasonably I never thought about it. Most of their stuff is also on e-music for those looking to sample some of it on the cheap. I have yet to hear either of the new releases but have been spending lots of time with the their last Ghana Special release.
  16. I just discovered the Analog Africa label, been loving these two all week:
  17. I like the new record, think I'll take my buddy who is a major Townerhead to the SF show.
  18. Yeah, its a strange place to me also as its so Classic Rock oriented. Plus I will never get the folks who spend 200 grand on a stereo system to play Billy Joel remasters. However some people really do know their stuff and its ok for some reviews on gear or new vinyl/cd remasters that might be of interest to me.
  19. Mtume - Harold Land w/Bobby Hutcherson - A New Shade Of Blue. I was very excited to finally track down a vinyl copy of A New Shade Of Blue last week.
  20. Agree the version of Blow Up on Oblique is one of my favorite tunes from that period of Blue Note, I never tire of it.
  21. NP: Nigeria 70 while checking out the new Wax Poetics
  22. Thought about it till I saw the 60 dollar price tag. Recent ECM's on CD sound fantastic and I can still hunt down early 70's german vinyl pressings (which I prefer the to the american pressings) and 80's american pressings for 4-8 bucks.
  23. Would love to see pictures of that original 61 Macintosh system. Nice.
  24. Yeah the mp3 comp is very good, totally digging it right now. Love the guys dedication.
  25. Check out this guys Blog: http://voodoofunk.blogspot.com/ Made a trip to Ghana and Nigeria last month and put out adds and flyers saying records wanted. Puts a whole new meaning to record digging. The compilation of what he came up with is here: http://cdn4.libsyn.com/voodoofunk/danger.mp3?nvb=20100210221210&nva=20100211222210&t=081e4b9ce5f37241bad3d
