Just some thoughts on why I am somewhat tired of jazz
WorldB3 replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I LOVE Dwight Yoakam. The 2nd best County singer in the biz until Merle Haggard passes on. With all apologies to George Jones who back in his day was something. In a way Country has some of the same image problems that Jazz does as far as what is really popular is considered pretty bad. -
Interesting. Sorry to go off topic but I would say including myself most people like to know the songs going in before they see a concert. But after the last record by the Dave Holland Quintet which I thought was ok and then seeing the songs live which was amazing I went back to the cd and enjoyed it much more. In a way the record seemed like the cliff notes version of the songs compared to the longer novel live versions if you will. But once I could appreciate all of the nuances of the songs from hearing them live the versions on the cd made sense. hmmm... thinking I may just go to the SF show since a friend offered me a great seat for it and if I like the show I will get the CD afterwards.

RIP Teo. Thanks for all of the landmark recordings.

Just some thoughts on why I am somewhat tired of jazz

My wife and I were listening to the new Dead Road Trips from 77 and she was saying how Brad Mehldau needs to do a cover of Sugaree. I am sure he thinks he is way too cool for something like that but I think he could make it work. It seems like the Radiohead songbook is all used up for jazz covers but there are couple songs on the new record in Reconer and All I Need that would make great Jazz tunes. Outside of the normal Brit pop 90's stuff if you like a bit psych, soul and dub maybe try Vanishing Point and Scremadelica by Primal Scream. They just did a deluxe re-issue of Beck's Odelay, I might revisit that one soon to see how it held up. -

Second the comments on Melford, in fact it was her record Alive In The House Of Saints that got me back into the blues after I got burnt out on it two years ago. The way she plays the blues is more of a feel but that essence of Chicago Blues is there. Now I am back big time into Pre War Blues and Otis Span-Muddy Waters Chicago blues. I think with me if I am practicing (more of a hobbyist at this point) standards or sight reading the last thing I want to spend my free time listening to are ii-v-i's and anything hard bop related. I have been spinning a lot this week the Keith Jarrett standards trio record "Changless" which like the title says contains no changes. Just kind of these Steve Reich vamps and taking off from there, but i wouldn't call it free jazz either. Its nice to hear musicians of that caliber just going on listening and feeling as opposed to improvising off the road map of a tune. I will say that after the last two years of heavy Jazz listening I have been really enjoying vocal - singer songwriter music again of late but I can't ever see a time when I give up jazz completely. -
Yeah, I thought Bill Walton was right to call him out on that and Shaq was out of line to call Walton a hypocrite. Seems like Randy Moss set the standard on how to get what you want. Edit to above post, Orlando is also very exciting in the lEast and should go far.

Greats night of Basketball here on the West Coast (I feel sorry for fans who have to watch teams in the lEast except for the Pistons and Celtics, more on them in a sec) last night with Suns - Lakeshow, what a game! Lakers are scary good and the seeing Shaq run up the court and getting a feed from Nash maybe a sign of things to come. Stern needs to eliminate division and conference seeding. The Lakers or Suns could have the second best record in the west by a game and go from a 1 seed to a 5th. Why punish a team for having a better record than a team with a worst record in a division that isn't as good. Again go to best of 16 format. As great as the Suns - Lakers was the game of the night was Dubs vs Team Green with Barron hitting the game winner at the buzzer. Monta Ellis is a highlight reel every-night and Andris Beidrins was balling (there both only 21). Last night was my first look at the Celtics and I was very impressed with the team defense. The Warriors had to work for every basket. With the great D, shooters and half court game the Celtics are built for the playoffs. As if Boston needed another good sports team. sigh..

I hope they show that again as I missed it, I love Ribot and Buddy Miller. I need to hear the record again as I was a bit disappointed with it at first, I felt it was a bit innocuous. I think the songs could work much better live.

There was a write up on Runt in one of our local weekly's last summer. http://www.sfweekly.com/2006-08-16/music/the-italian-job/1 The focus on the article is on 70's Italian Prog Rock. I have a friend who did some marketing for Water about 3 years ago. He hooked me up with some Eddie Gayle, Ablert Ayler and Terry Reid re-issues.

Rock vs. Jazz
WorldB3 replied to papsrus's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
re: the two comments above. I think it depends. Obviously Van Halen (just one example) hasn't aged well. I guess if you were just known for being a "rock band" you are stuck. Singer songwriters get off a little easier. His voice aside Dylan has put out three great records in a row and his live shows are for the most part very good not to mention he has turned in a hell of a guitar player that takes most of the leads in a band that is very improvisational in their interpretations of his old songs. Nick Lowe and Richard Thompson have both aged gracefully and are putting out quality stuff. There also seems to be a bit of ageism in rock or at least with within indie rock. If you not under 30, damaged and putting out angular and sardonic music they tend to toss the artist aside once they mature. For example see the hatred towards Cat Power now that she is sober and putting out quality records with soul musicians from Stax, also including Spooner Oldham. There is also backlash towards Iron and Wine for putting out a album with great production instead of singing solo into a four track. I just don't get it sometimes, it seems they relate more to the image than the art. -
I think there is portion of the population that is poor and white that are kind of looked down upon and ignored. I grew up poor and due to the stressful conditions education was something that was never stressed as being important. I got out and turned out ok ( I have a good job, own a house) due to hard work but I certainly would have loved to have had parents that had the money and time to take an interest in my future. Luckily I have a strong curiosity in computers, music and reading. It also helps that my wife and I have a three days a week no TV rule.

SteroJack, Great mix and I have to say I am humbled by how many no clues as to what it was on it. A couple quick thoughts. Track 1. I knew it was Hawk but didn't know where it came from, looking to pick it up when the answer comes. Track 2. No idea but I thought since its a smallish big ensemble with a latin tinge it could have been Gerald Wilson but I know thats not right. Track 3. Jazz vocals are not my thing so this didn't connect with me but I love track 13 and curious to find out who the female singer is on that one. Track 4. Love bluesy Jazz but the 80's sounding production turns me off. Track 5. Love it, no clue. Everything is no clue (and I need to spin a few more times to comment on) until Track 8 which I own. Had to look it up to make sure as its been ages since I played which is a shame because he is one of my favorites. Track 11. Great job on the recording. Must have been fun to watch. The track earlier from the vinyl and this one really adds to making the mix more personable and more enjoyable for the listener. Track 15. One of my favorite Wayne Shorter tracks to play on the Piano, this is really fun to hear thanks for including it. I will add some more comments when I have more time to spend with it. Thanks again and looking forward to he answers.

Bluenote was one of the reasons I left. I won't name names but there were also a couple others. Oddly enough I never had a personal problem with Kelman, in fact in PM's between us he was always overly nice to me. Words, I hope you can salvage the board but I want you to know I really miss your posts and I hope you can hang out here. And please start blogging again. I am finding the Big O to be kind of like a neighborhood bar where AAJ and Blindman Blues folks come hang out from time to time. To all the regulars thanks for having us. I didn't know him very well, but I miss him as well. He was a very zen like influence. BlueNote82 (among a couple of others) hightened tensions to an unnerving degree so everyone reads posts in a more aggressive manner and hence everyone is on everyone else a lot quicker. Hence the tenor of the board many have referenced. The duct tape comment was out of line imo, and to be qouted by the mods with a "yeah that" wasn't a good move. However, seeline, you also know where I stand concerning coming back and trudging things up (albeit usually in defense) rather than just letting the thing die for another day. But that being said, two perosnalities, two ways of handling an issue. Neither are wrong or right per se. Personally I am simply trying to mend things and highlight the issues while avoiding an argument that won't have a satisfacory conclusion for either party. I'm seeing if I can salvage the board that has been my home, but I am finding Org to be a good surrogate even if I do serve more as a lurker than anything else. Now if I can only get a legend map for user names between the two... And thanks for having me.

Current trend: selling original CDs but keeping the mp3s
WorldB3 replied to Kyo's topic in Miscellaneous Music
If all labels would include MP3's with new vinyl I would only buy new vinyl. If I really want to support an artist I will go their site or their labels site and download directly as that way I know the most amount of money is going to the artists or the people that support them. -

I don't follow. If for example (btw. I am too lazy to do this myself) I trade in 30 CDs I never play anymore for a credit slip that allows me to buy 8 brand new CD's keep a copy on my hard drive, trade them back in within a week to get credit to buy 3 more new CD's I don't see how that is hurting the artist or producer. It seems like the only people its hurting is the record store by taking advantage of the policy they created. At any rate 11 new CD's got purchased within a week. -

I have a close friend who is a music fanatic. Has something close to thousand (or two) LP's and CD's. He is going though all of his CD's keeping the CD's that either have a sentimental value or packaging that requires him to keep them and with everything else he is doing a lossless burn to two hard drives and trading them in to Amoeba. With his credit slip he picks up stuff he thought he would never give a change to because he rips and brings them back for 80% credit, repeat until the credit is all used up. he feels good about it since he isn't selling them for money and is supporting artists that he might never have before given a listen to. -
Over on the west coast tonight there was another great Golden State - Phoenix game, who the W's have now beat twice this year to go along with two wins over the San Antonio and a blow out win at New Orleans. Mota Ellis is the man, Believe!

You haven't been able to watch Sports Center highlights in peace for about the last five years. If it has become all corporate tie in b.s and the flag ship station for teams only from NY and specifically Boston. After years of hearing from Joe Six Pack (not the informed people on this site) that Barry Bonds was the only person ever to use roids I have to say I am enjoying seeing the Rocket get called out.

Got mine yesterday, have yet to give it a close listen but did get to the first four tracks. A couple of them are things I should know but I can't put my finger on. This will be fun, thanks.

The sound is really something. By far the best sounding Dead disc I own. The performances of Let It Grow, Sugaree and Franklins are epic. Haven't got to much on the other discs except for Scarlet-Fire but from what I have heard I am very happy with it.

I have given Holon a couple spins and have to say it phenomenal. A bit different than Stoa but just as good.

I just got this from Emusic and have been playing it everyday. Big Mama Thornton - With the Muddy Waters Blues Band, 1966 w/ Muddy, Otis Spann and James Cotton. Great voice and tunes. Amazing.
