  1. I've never been a fan of this one or of "Goin' West" or "Feelin' The Spirit". All feel gimmicky to me, like product. Feeling the Spirit was my first Grant Green and I loved his soloing and tone on that album so much I became a fanatic so it will always have a place for me.
  2. If you have 12 already making it a bakers dozen won't hurt. My feeling is you can't have too much Grant Green but I wouldn't put it in his top five or ten releases. Fun date and unfairly bashed but not essential.
  3. In the Robin Kelley Monk biography I forget the drummer but there is a part where Monk tells a new a drummer something along the lines of "don't play that Roy Haynes shit, I just want you to swing"
  4. I was at a Kenny Rogers game when he pitched for the A's with a no hitter with one or two outs in the 9th and Kent Hrbek for the Twins broke it up with a bunt single. It was pretty bush league in my opinion. fwiw - Braden said he was cool with the bunt attempt yesterday and took it as a compliment.
  5. Well, well, well, look who earned his "extra 15 minutes" today. Perfecto!
  6. Dan, All I'm saying is enough is enough. A-Rod is right. 15 minutes of fame is more than enough for this guy, but for some inexplicable reason he thinks it's worth 30 or even 45 minutes. Time to get over it. BTW, Jim Palmer said he couldn't have cared less if A-Rod crossed his mound. I think for every Seaver, Gibson, Kaat and McCarver who says it's B.S., you can find others who say it isn't. Dudes, let it go. some reporter obviously asked him to elaborate on his opinions about A-rod. Braden elaborated, now the media is essentially upset at Braden for responding to the questions asked of him. I kinda like Braden because he will answer every question asked of him and he will elaborate. In an era where 98% of all the players say the same stock answers like "I just wanted to help the team" its nice to have a someone be a good interview. I do think however its time for him to let it go. That said if ARod was on my team helping them win I would say that he doesn't respect the game. He may be more of a team player now since last year (hmmm.. seems that winning brings out the best in everyone, if he was still on the Rangers he wouldn't be talking about this the way he is) but there is still something he doesn't get that I think is about the game being bigger than him or his team.
  7. Have you heard "In Pursuit" by McCaslin? Its one of those newish Jazz releases I find myself coming to again and again. I love that. Horrible week and that made everything so much better. thank you.
  8. sigh.... the last day of the year that the A's will be over 500. Justin Duchscherer left in the 4th inning to injury and Kurt Suzuki will probably go on the DL on Friday and Sheets will be gone by trade deadline and the A's will get nothing in return for him. Oh well they gave me a good April. At least there is some good young pitching and it was all about 2011 anyways but damn, giving up by May 1st is rough.
  9. Thats the beauty of it, like a good novel and a roller coaster. You don't know what kind of ups and downs will happen. Who thought the Giants would beat up on Halliday and then last night Todd Wellemeyer would shut down the best hitting team in the NL? As for getting swept by the Padres its just one of those things. Sometimes there are other teams you should beat that you can't for whatever reason. A couple of things to do seem certain. The Rays will score 8 runs a game every day (it just seems like every time I look they have 8 runs on the board) and who ever is the best player on the A's will get injured and who ever was the big free agent they sign will be a bust. Aside from that to quote the Yogi - "In baseball, you don't know nothing" and "It ain't the heat, it's the humility."
  10. I picked this up on emusic. Been one of those legend type records I thought I would never hear. Mark Weinstein: Cuban Roots
  11. Zito looks great tonight also. Wainwright has nasty stuff. Great pitching duel.
  12. I heard that A-Rod on his way back made to sure he kicked in some dirt where Braden lands his feet. Braden overreacted but for anybody who is a fan of crazy gritty lefties Braden is your man and the A's desperately need a few players with some fire.
  13. Some interesting names in that one from 68. Roseboro hitting the 1-5-3 TP from pitcher Dooley Womack to third baseman Bobby Cox (yes, that Bobby Cox) to Mickey Mantle.
  14. Also at the time jazz was being sampled on Hip Hop records and artists were not getting paid, he brought Donald Byrd, Ron Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith into the studio and on tour to get paid. This record was huge when it came out and I remember having friends who had no interest in jazz before asking me about which Donald Byrd records to get. The first Jazzmatazz also hipped me to MC Solaar and N'Dea Davenport. I remember being blown away by the N'Dea Davenport tunes because at the time Mariah Carey and Whiney Houston were huge and everybody was over singing but here N'Dea Davenport was singing soul and with soul. Old school style which is now popular thanks to Sharon Jones etc. Guru at the time was also some of the first rap I heard that had a positive message which lead me to Tribe and the Roots. This is bummer, he left us too early at 43. RIP.
  15. I don't think it mattered what McCartney put out because it could never hold up to the Beatles and it wouldn't be judged on its own terms. Now in indie rock everybody loves somebody who puts out melodic low fi records like McCartney and RAM which I both enjoy. I think Band On The Run is great but its obviously no Abbey Road. He went too pop after Venus and Mars for my tastes though there are a handful of singles through the 70's that are guilty pleasures. I dropped off after McCartney II but I did like what I heard off of Chaos and Creation and Electronic Arguments though I haven't spent a lot of time with them. I'll buy some of these if they have demo's and or live stuff from the early 70's McCartney, Wild Life and RAM era included on them.
  16. ^ I don't know, I said it before and I will say it again the Rays are really really good. They would run away with any other division in baseball except the NL East. The window is closing though, I hope they make it to the post season and go deep.
  17. Frank, This is beautiful. You can tell that you have had this band together for a while and you all really listen to each other in the improvisations. It's a gem. Well done.
  18. Will be interesting for sure--in the first game you guys are going up against Vasquez, who's been one of the few weak links for NY so far, and in the second game against Phil Hughes, who had a pretty decent outing in his first start, but who's still certainly a bit of an X factor in NY's starting rotation. I'm hoping he develops into a solid-to-very-good starter, as Andy Pettitte can't keep pitching forever (and is probably a good bet to retire after this season). Thanks Ghost. Hopefully they get the game in tonight, lots of rain last night and more in the forecast. I have no illusions that the A's will win this series but I am looking to see them compete and show improvement. Tonight will be interesting as I think Gio Gonzales is the best 5th starter in the AL, he is young with great stuff so it will be interesting how he handles a full house and the pressure of facing the world champs. Ben Sheets, who knows? he needs to be on, you don't win games against the Yankees by battling through it. Dallas Braden goes Wednesday and he is a great kid and inspiring story of coming out of the projects in Stockton. If the A's can get any offense they can pull one out.
  19. If you liked Critical Mass and Pass it On from his own label Dare2 Records I would say Pathways is better. There are other places I would start if your new to his recordings but if your a fan of the recent stuff you won't be disappointed.
  20. Wynton Kelly - Kelly Blue. When I bought this and showing my friend (who actually knows something about Jazz thanks to me, he is mostly indie hipster) at the store said, oh what's Riverside records? Sigh...
  21. Congrats to the Orioles for breaking the losing steak, wish it came against another team but I will take the 3 out of 4. Yankees come in on Tuesday so will know more about my team after that. Giants lost a heart breaker but you can't blame Zito who was great. Bochy made the right call to bring in Romo who has had a good year and good career numbers against Manny. Sometimes one bad pitch will beat you.
  22. wp: St. Germain - Tourist np: Lightnin Hopkins - Last Night Blues
  23. Over what exactly? The Red Sox were the most successful team of the decade as far championships and playoff appearances go. If they need something they have payroll to get it like giving 18 million a year to Lackey to be their 3rd starter, not number 1 starter but 3rd!. If I am supposed to feel sorry for Dan because he thinks the Red Sox are gods chosen team and should win 162 games and a World Series every year my sympathy for him on a scale of 1 - 100 is minus 75. Dan can start earning some points here if he starts congratulating fans of other teams on here when they beat his Red Sox. Until then he is a classless hot head.
  24. Ghost of Miles - great set. Hopefully you helped to sell some vinyl.
  25. WP: Ralph Towner - Old Friends, New Friends NP: Gabor Szabo - The Sorcerer Gatefold - original stereo. TTK do you have or have heard the Mono of this?
