so all this stuff is from the tapes, huh? If Charly has the tapes, I wonder if some of the unissued material survived? There's an additional piece from Luna Surface, an unissued Sunny Murray (which has a more complex story), a missing Mal Waldron track, and probably more. Lowe thought the pianist was Dave Burrell, so it might be either/or.

What vinyl are you spinning right now??
clifford_thornton replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Live in German Concert and Gathering, both issued on CBS-Sony in Japan only. Yeah, you're right about the Blue Note material too, forgot about that -- scattered over two double album sets in various configurations under Corea's name. I like those. -

One of my favorite ESP jazz records. I have an original but would love to get the Japanese with obi "just for fun." It's hard to come by. The Circle stuff was foundational for me and though all have done work elsewhere that I engage with more, I have a hard time cutting those three records loose. -
Thanks for the rec; didn't realize that was actually released, saw some clips from the concert online.

yeah, this well predates his ECM involvement. Mine just landed via Bandcamp; excited to listen when the malaise lifts.

yeah, it is -- confirmed by family, major loss.

yeah, some things click and some things don't. She was here to do what she did & that's important.

According to friends and collaborators, the pedal steel guitarist, improviser & composer Susan Alcorn has passed quite suddenly. I was lucky to see her in wide-ranging contexts from Jandek to Mary Halvorson. A fascinating presence on the experimental music scene, she will be missed. The first record of hers that I heard was "And I Await the Resurrection of the Pedal Steel Guitar." It's excellent, and there's a whole lot more where that came from. RIP.

Too bad. She'd been in hospice a while so this is not unexpected, but nevertheless, glad she's at rest. Did anyone here see her as Peg Leg in Robert Wilson's The Black Rider? There are some great images -- this was the 2004 Barbican revival of the 1990 original.

Jimmy Lyons - Other Afternoons First CD Issue
clifford_thornton replied to colinmce's topic in Re-issues
of course, if we're talking the group with Howard as well, a box should not be released without the tracks from the session with Pete Brown and Jim Mullen (Piblokto, Battered Ornaments)! There's also an unissued date with Burton Greene in for Bobby Few that I'd like to hear, and I suppose the two tracks with Wright, Few, and Ali on the Hans Dulfer LP could be added -- they're super. -

yeah. The Fractal issues are even hard to find now, and did include extra tracks. There's also a bunch of very enjoyable live/radio boots kicking around. Looks like the "Your Prayer" album is in print on vinyl, though the cover art scan is not so good. Haven't heard it so I don't know whether it is a quality pressing (have an original which sounds great). -
Jimmy Lyons - Other Afternoons First CD Issue

huh. Wonder if they boosted it in some harsh way. I have all of the Actuels as originals and sound varies as does pressing quality, so needle drop is not exactly a guarantee here. Kinda shocks me that no Frank Wright is currently in print on CD (though the ESP stuff, incl. Moers & Ali's Alley, is "around"). Criminally under-sung saxophonist, and both the band with Noah Howard and with Alan Silva are tremendous. -
1922: Jack Sels 1929: Ed Shaughnessy 1937: Jeff Clyne 1939: Jeanne Lee and *debatably* Alan Silva (22 or 29 Jan)

Been a while on Filles, but probably would agree. -

All of those are excellent, excellent records. I think the Acting Trio is a real sleeper, though it is very "out" in a European, non-idiomatic sense. -

yeah, that's from LJC, right? Looks accurate to me. -

yeah, the title reversal is right from what I remember too. I certainly can't afford those kinds of prices. But obviously some people can... I think they are a bit like rare books, and the rare book market at least used to be quite lucrative, much moreso than LPs. But I've heard that it's cooled in recent years, so maybe vinyl is something like a replacement. Time will tell. I can think of just a few records that command five-figure sums, and many more books that will do the same. -
great news. One of my favorite Actuels (and this should be obvious, haha).

Iconic album in its first state in top condition... those with deep pockets will always drive the market. I do vaguely recall this auction (can't look it up now), and similar copies have gone for over $2K numerous times. Yes, the tape speed is wrong on all early pressings, and I'm not sure it was corrected until the CD era. Someone with more knowledge can probably add more here. I'm fine with a Japanese mono at this point; years ago, I had a very early but kind of battered copy, and sold it for $40. Could probably get a lot more now! -
Unissued Music You Would Like To See Released

Night of... is expensive, yes, and excellent. Agree that the Strata-East adjacency is part of it.
