  1. yeah, it is a bit odd circumstantially. But you're right to point out that there are many great roles/films we should be commenting on. The French Connection, The Conversation, Night Moves, Young Frankenstein, and Bonnie & Clyde are among my favorites. RIP.
  2. AP is reporting scattered pill bottles and no apparent gas leak.
  3. Well, there are those situations where the married couple both take something to end their lives, though giving something to the dog would be murder.
  4. yes, or suicide. RIP in any event -- he was truly great.
  5. Huh. I'd be interested in hearing it without spending $20 on something I already own... happy to have a minty first Savoy LP for the "original" order and while it doesn't sound like a modern recording, I do enjoy it immensely.
  6. yes, I recall the doc saying that there was a somewhat extortionist ask for $100k from Sly via people associated with the Panthers. Unclear if these were actual Party members or some other individuals. Strange times... This Riot cut is definitely not "normal" music. Cool.
  7. Yeah, the film did not go into his relationships a great deal, though it's clear that there were a number of them. Thinking on it, the film also didn't really delve into what drove his addiction to the fever pitch that it eventually became. It amazes me that he made it out alive.
  8. Weirdly, it wasn't noted anywhere in the documentary that Cynthia Robinson died nearly a decade ago. Nor was the process of getting signed to a major record label (and having a long contract) discussed. So those are a couple of weird omissions.
  9. Watched the Sly documentary. Very good portrait, it seems, as I was fairly unfamiliar with the whole "thing" despite having passing awareness of some of the music. I also had no idea he was a producer before the Family Stone came together.
  10. ah, interesting -- thanks. Heard very little of Marshall, and should rectify that.
  11. ah, so it was Frisell! I was hedging my bets.
  12. I still don't understand chopping up these albums, which are already kind of a tangle, even further for the purpose of PD comps.
  13. I was thinking Pepper too -- close but not quite -- and am not coming up with an answer myself. No recordings of Pepper covering that one on any records I own or have access to.
  14. they were born about a year apart in different prefectures, and the saxophonist changed his last name (by adoption or parental marriage?) to Mine. But they could be related through the latter. Who knows. It doesn't really matter, but I am curious.
  15. Any relation to saxophonist Kohsuke Mine?
  16. Some young artists I see -- in varying genres -- don't have physical releases to sell at all, though the shows might be well attended. Bringing in a little money from gigs or a tour without having to schlep around merch you're in debt for seems like a fairly reasonable way to go about it.
  17. I put birthday posts in my instagram for musicians/etc. no longer living. The acknowledgement of someone's existence on this earth can be cause for celebration, whether or not they're still with us.
  18. Yeah, that footage with Mobley is very cool. I recall when it first popped up.
  19. yeah, they were going to work on it with a known/regarded label and unfortunately that did not come together. I am hopeful something works out. Re: Duke, funny, he looks older to me but could be 40something in the photograph I've seen (from the Trident LP). Pretty sure he is no longer alive, but I have no confirmation to back up that assumption.
  20. yeah, though her work spans a wide range of music, I would tend to agree. Rein de Graaff is excellent, though. The albums I have under his leadership date to the early 1970s and certainly fit into a post-Coltrane/Tyner approach.
  21. I only have the Hill (of those two). A classic. And I have the OTHER two Sudler Steeplechase albums, but not that one. Excellent.
  22. thanks. Giving it a whirl. yup. this works. Thanks!
