Album Covers with Original Paintings
clifford_thornton replied to jazzcorner's topic in Miscellaneous Music
excellent disc! -
Yes! Heard that a little later, so awesome. He plays a bit like that on the Charles Brackeen, owing somewhat to the choice of amplification I assume.
-
Haden is on the first and last tracks of Orgasm, and Reggie Johnson is on the rest. Not sure on what record he first grabbed me sonically; probably Change of the Century, which was also the first Ornette album I bought. Played it to death in college.

nah, he's in excellent form and that's enough for me, but...

FWIW, I'm not hearing much of the "out"-ness that was described to me by an early listener of the material on this set (well before it was announced). It's good, though, and I'm glad it is available.

Would be nice to just walk over to the Sam Records shop and pick up some titles!

List of Black Jazz Musicians Who Moved Abroad
clifford_thornton replied to tranemonk's topic in Artists
That 2019 thread is a bit all over the place (pun not intended). -
wow, thanks! The vocal ensemble layers sound like Ligeti or something. So heavy! FWIW I have the Atlantic record but haven't listened to it in ages. I remember liking it but not a lot of specific details.

I have downloaded it on Apple Music and it works fine for me through standalone computer speakers. Excellent set. I'll grab the CDs.

I wonder if the compression for platforms like Apple & Spotify worsen the bass overload from what one might hear on CD.

got all those LPs and can concur with Pim's recommendations!
-
great ones, for sure. I have the Dreher set spread across two double LPs. The Waldron-Hino is a beaut, picked up on Japanese vinyl when it was a more affordable title.

Byard Lancaster, The complete Palm Recordings 1973-74
clifford_thornton replied to cayetano's topic in Re-issues
Funny Funky is personally my favorite of the bunch. -
I haven't dug the vinyl of A Little Bit Of Miles out in many years but don't recall anything like that. Certainly possible it's on the record and I just don't remember. Blues for Lady Day is ok, not one of Mal's best. Certainly not bad, but as Pim says in his blog, not particularly emotional or tense, and kind of phoned-in. As far as soli go, The Opening (Futura), All Alone (GTA), and On Steinway (Overseas/Carson) are three of my favorites. The Snake Out blog is essential to get one started on the Mal journey!

yeah, got a notice too. Pierre's essay is great. I have all this stuff already but hoarders gonna hoard! I am sure the sound is a lot better, too. -
I can't get too excited about the IG original-vinyl show and tell, personally. Not much deep observation in the commentary, either. Organissimo forums expat homefromtheforest is pretty good though and an exception, as well as a couple others.

Don Byas Mosaic set available for pre-order
clifford_thornton replied to jazzbo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I threw on Byas' "Ballads for Swingers" (Montmartre recordings) while eating lunch and man, what captivating solos he had at that time. Well, any time really, but 60s Byas is quite heavy! -
Maybe I'll look at Mastodon again. I tried rejoining Twitter and immediately felt it was too gross to mess with, and deleted my account. Threads I looked at once and decided to avoid. Bluesky didn't seem great to me either. Instagram is a difficult place to have actual conversations and textual content. The ads and pure "junk" have also gotten out of control. Recently I have thought about totally deactivating it -- again, it's also a real time-suck -- but seems necessary on some level for promoting one's activities. @tallswami there if anyone wants to follow. I signed up for Substack but decided to take a year off from writing, so haven't used it yet. My understanding is that one can monetize one's work there, and it could be a good place to explore posting interviews and articles for a handful of readers. I'm curious if anyone here has any experiences with it to share from the posting/authoring angle.

Will definitely pick this one up at some point. The band is very interesting; Mal had an affinity for playing with rock-adjacent musicians at the time, given his work with Christan Burchard of Embryo, Jimmy Jackson (Embryo, Haboob, Amon Düül II), the Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, and probably more I am forgetting.

Getting some new shelves built after an accident resulted in a heavy object torpedoing into the leading edge of a pile of records stacked on the floor, taking chunks out of a couple box set covers. I really need to get control over this stuff and stop accumulating more than I have room for. As Sabir Mateen once titled a tune, "addiction ain't fiction" !

I suppose the Burns/English material is from the 1960s.
