  1. Can anyone identify this tune from the short depiction here? I could write out more if it would help but should think this is enough if you know it. It comes from a session on dime-a-dozen recently by the Ray Brown Trio, with Monty Alexander and Russell Malone. I'm trying a manuscript example first but if this doesn't work may make an MP3. Thanks.
  2. Tal Farlow? Must listen again soon.
  3. Email sent. I'd like to be a downloader.

    Ronnie Ross

Received "Cleopatra's Needle" LP at last - apparently it was out of stock. Cannot fault this - disc is perfect - sounds fabulous. Costs about $50 - well worth it for any Ross fan and those who wouldn't so describe themselves - yet. Ronnie said I believe that climbing up the monument to have his picture taken for the album was the most frightening thing he ever did. Doesn't look all that high from the picture on the front, although he is staring up into the sky in a distracted fashion, presumably trying not to look down. The album sold so poorly when first available that Ronnie did his own promotion, I've read somewhere.
  5. That link leads me nowhere! I tested it and it was okay then. Anyway, it's Bruce Barth, "A Joyful Noise" from album "East and West". Here's the link again. Sorry about that.
  6. {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} Can't believe I was so far off on the piano player!!! I know an embrocation that's efficacious in every case. Don't overdo it!
  7. 7 is not familiar, nor the players as far as I can tell. Some peculiar sounds in there in places. Is it a bass clarinet at the start? Musical saw later?!!! No, some sort of keyboard? An interesting piece though. NC Tambourine intro to 8. The tune eludes me but maybe I've heard it before. NC again. All right. Don't like 9 at all - NMCOT I'm afraid. No ideas whatsoever. Last one - 10 - now this tune I know I've heard before but this version is unknown to me. Plenty of energy. So I'm out with a whimper. Thanks for this disc too, JC - I managed to get some here maybe but I'm sure I'll be kicking myself as usual when the proper answers are revealed.
  8. Still no ideas about 7 either. Cannot name the tune. Sounds like a flugel horn, soloing first. Rather heavy rhythm - not too keen on this one. If there is a tune in 8 I don't recognise it. No clue as to who. Pleasant enough. 9 is much the same as 8 except I hear a tune there but don't know what it is. Strong presence. Tune is "Skylark" on 10 of course - great tune. Brought Jim Hall to mind because of the album "Grand Encounter" I guess but I don't think it's him. The alto doesn't bring any names to mind either. The sound is shaky on my version. 11 is a blues but I don't recognise the tune even though it sounds a bit familiar. Sounded a bit like Kenny Burrell at first - might be but didn't sound quite fluent enough. That concludes my comments on disc 1 - didn't contribute much I know but I can now read others comments with impunity. I see you've posted, Mike so I'll have a look now. Thanks for a varied and demanding disc, JC. I shall certainly listen some more in time to come.
  9. It seems the BFT scene is undergoing something of a transformation with the advent of up/downloading facilities. If MP3 files are considered satisfactory, I guess we could have giant BFT's about ten times as big as hitherto, put onto computer data discs instead of audio CD's for those who need them in the mail rather than as downloads . But seriously, maybe we should have some kind of approved procedures in place. I would suggest it's not a good idea to post links for the downloads publicly as this could make difficulties re copyright - just send in PM or email to those who are officially signed up. If the links are posted, can anyone then download without any commitment to participate? Presumably the limit on the number of downloads allowed would soon be exceeded? Any thoughts?
  10. Discs made for Magnificent Goldberg and will be mailed today.
  11. 5 is not really my kind of thing - much prefer accoustic piano to the electric variety. No clue as to players or tune. 6. I know - track 7 of this album. I've got this - like the album a lot - unpretentious - fulfilling. All for today - tomorrow maybe.
  12. I'm guessing 4 is track 4 of this album If so, the clarinetist appeared in BFT#36 (mine) but on different instruments of course. It sounds very nice indeed - I like the pianist and the bass player both.
  13. 4 sounds kind of mid-eastern. Quite interesting but I've no idea who are they are. No clue as to 5 either. Propulsive but I find the rhythm a little monotonous after a while. Inspiration absent on 6 too. Doesn't sound familiar at all but quite liked it. Nothing much to contribute on this instalment of disc 1 - perhaps I'll do better on disc 2.
  14. Track 6 again from this album. No prizes for guessing it's a Monk tune - "Bright Mississippi". I hope to be back with more later.
  15. 1. This sounds like Jackie McLean and Sonny Clark to me - could be way off the mark. Can't be any more specific. I like this kind of music. 2. I can nail for sure - very familiar. Track 6 from this album
  16. 2. This is nice too. Don't know the tune. No guesses. 3. Paso doble? Clarinet and tenor with piano. Something different - I like this too but no guesses. Back with more comments later I hope.
  17. Listening again to 1. I like this. Trumpet and sop sax front line. Time signature sounds like 6/4 maybe. Piano leads off so perhaps the leader of the group? This album, track 8?
  18. All has worked okay for me with the files from "yousendit.com". I've listened and am ready when you are to start commenting. A very interesting bunch of stuff. Is it all right to pass on the links to other potential participants? - I have done so to sidewinder. Perhaps you will need to keep track of the number of downloads although with a 100 limit I should think that would be enough. As the links are not posted here but only sent to participants separately, does this avoid the copyright issue? I can't see that there's much difference between that and sending a CDR. Anything to avoid queuing at the Post Office I should think!
  19. Files received via yousendit - thanks.

Update on the cover picture hunt - got something from eBay on one on my list. As an EP only, I guess there is no real cover. Still looking.
  21. I would like to join in - PM coming soon.

thanks for this - something for the one-eared folk amongst us I fear Well, I've just checked the reissue of 'Mexican Green' and it is in original, glorious stereo ! In fact they have done a wonderful job with the facsimile. Things look promising for the Ross - maybe tooter can confirm when he receives it. He will but they are taking their time. At least it's "active" now.
  23. I've been there too! When I run into difficulties, I call on invaluable help from Organissimo friends. There always seems to be a slight colour difference when pasting though; I've found I can have several goes at one job; some better than others but none perfect except when there's a clear line in a convenient place running through the image. Surely there would be a market for an LP sized scanner.

Also on eBay "Buy It Now" here I've now ordered it from another UK supplier.

Do you know if it's a stereo vinyl version or mono? I go caught out by the Japanese (and UK) CD reissue in mono of Tubbs' '100% Proof' so I don't want to get fooled again (as they keep singing on CSI). That is a good question ! Several of us Ross-ophiles have ordered the vinyl so if you hear the champagne corks popping in a few weeks time you'll know its the stereo. One would think (hope) that if they've gone to the trouble of putting out vinyl it must be from the original source. I got an immediate "out of stock" notification again though. Did anyone fare better?
