Now at 13 - had a break yesterday. Vibes leader, as he goes first? A blues, in 4/4 time. Nothing untoward here, a very listenable performance but I've no idea who or what, not the tune or anything else.
-
Thanks to all again for brightening up a rather dull day - looking better now.
-
Thank you all - I'm doing my best to have a great day here in dismal London. The next BFT is a must, Flurin. I did already know about it. Haven't finished John's yet though.
-
Track 12 is not such an example. Didn't think so but live in hope. And thanks for the pic - printed but not yet framed.

Up to 10 now - half way. This one is in 3/4 too - alto sounds a bit Desmond-ish perhaps. Don't recognize anybody, or the tune. Pleasant performance. Straight on to 11. This is a bit more lively - once again a great sound, the baritone. French horn? Tuba? Tenor sax. Tune sounds a little familiar. 4/4 this time. No ideas. And 12 - baritone again. Just for a couple of seconds I thought this might be Ronnie Ross but that was wishful thinking. Doesn't quite have RR's fluency although the sound is similar. Could it be the Clarke-Boland Big Band? If so, the baritone is likely to be Sahib Shihab which I don't think it is. Don't know the track anyway, or the tune. If this does turn out to be the CBBB with Ronnie Ross on baritone I would be over the moon. Although I've stopped doing much on the RR website, I still dabble occasionally and a question was raised about whether or not Ronnie Ross ever played with the CBBB. There do not seem to be any recordings as evidence and some examples which purported to be, on eBay, turned out to be confusion between the two Ronnies, Ross and Scott. So the suspicion was that Ronnie Ross had not participated despite the various mentions on the web that he did. However, one of my contacts has been able to confirm that he did as he remembers him mentioning it together with escapades with Derek Humble. My contact also told me that even Ronnie's own father got him confused with Scott on occasion, asking him whether he still had the club in London (in his old age). So if anyone does have any examples of recordings of Ross in the CBBB, do let me know.

Cigar for tooter! As a rabid anti-smoker (no objection so long as I can be somewhere else) I would have preferred a different award. But I shall hard copy and frame the comment. Could you do a Couw-type graphic to go with it???? I know, I know - no time!

not quite right on the country or the tune. But almost, so here's a bonus (click). Yes, love it! What would Desmond have said. I know 6 not Take Five of course but a European (?) bandwagon attempt?
-
Straight on to 9 - very jaunty piano. I've been listening to some Herbie Nichols lately and this sounds a bit like him but sure it's not. Could easily be an Nichols tune I should think. Propulsive performance, enjoyable. Could it be Ianscy Korossy?
-
And the tenor on 8 has a great sound too. Very moody piece. Seems to be 3/4 time, at least some of the time. No idea who or what but I shall listen to this often.

Bright and early - listening to 7. Straight-ahead, a blues, in common time. Don't recognize anyone. Solos all round - good. Tuneful. I like the guitar sound.
-
on to 6. Start sounds a bit like a marimba but then clearly vibes later. 5/4? I think so. Modal sort of thing. What's this? Violin? Musical saw? Some obscure stringed instrument from the hinterland? Building up to a climax for the end. Grows on one. Later...

Listening to 5 now - this is in 3/4 I suppose. Blues. No clue but I like it. Fade at the end - have we only got part? Letting Winamp play it again. Flute sounded a bit like Yusef at first but sure it's not. Good one.
-
Polish Take Five? The trumpet reminded me of Tiger Okoshi but that seems unlikely. Pity they didn't get in before Brubeck and Desmond - might have made a lot of money. Just as catchy. I wonder if I'll ever hear it on the underground. Bass clarinet in there too - I like that sound. Enough for today. I will return.
-
Ah, I see. A bit of the start of 4 tagged on the end of 3. You never know with this jazz.
-
3 is on now. Is that a penny whistle, or maybe panpipes? Pretty wild for me. Two penny whistles played together? Now a didgeridoo sort of noise - trombone, is it? What a strange ending.
-
Listening to 2. Not a clue! But a nicely paced performance, and once again not in common time. Could this be the theme? Or is that Polish jazz?
-
I knew the first tune straight away - "Nana Imboro" by the Jan "Ptaszyn" Wroblewski Quintet. Leader on tenor, J Milian on vibes W Lechowski guitar , S Zwierchowski bass and J Grossman drums. I can't say anything about issues though. It's nice - assertive, raucous but varied tenor offset by restrained vibes, good rhythmic propulsion and an attractive, hypnotic repetition of the theme. So that was easy. I'll get back to you later with the rest of the answers.

The album [Jazz for Playboys] is available for download on Crabbit and Daft. Kenny Burrell too.

Is it worth mentioning that 7 - the Gerry Mulligan tune referred to - is "Walkin' Shoes"? I thought this hardly worth saying but it has not been specified so far has it?
-
Not difficult to be first I find - it's good to set things going - starts can be slow. Proud? - well, not sure about that but thank you anyway, just a best shot. I will try to follow your leads but doubt I can come up with any more guesses even - negative thinking!

1 Really catchy – I can’t listen to this without smiling or even chuckling – I haven’t tried singing along yet, will have to get all the words first. The guy going on with his “hahaha’s” against all the odds! And the “shhhhh’s”! Count in seems to be French to my untutored ear. What a good start. 2 Not up on this era, don’t listen as a rule but sounds good nonetheless. Django-like guitar? I wouldn’t know. 3 “Sweet Sue”. Could be Grappelli maybe. 4 “Running Wild”. No clue. 5 “Day Dream” – I particularly like the trombonist playing without vibrato and keeping the tune quite straight. Really attractive playing throughout. Absolutely no guesses however but I will be especially intrigued to find out who they are. 6 Another good one. No idea of the tune. Trumpet sounds a little like Art Farmer but don’t think it is. Alto I can’t place either 7 I’ll walk away – not into vocals (or organs incidentally!). Nice tune though. 8 Unfamiliar again – Roger Guerin? Just a wild guess. Sounds good. 9 “I’ll Remember April” – always liked this tune since [Mr Jackson’s Message], an EP I had so many years ago. Enjoyed this but clueless. 10 Tacit. 11 Not a familiar tune and neither can I guess any of the players. Trumpet or flugel, sounds a little familiar. 12 Don’t know anything still but I somehow thought of Paolo Fresu. 13 Well, that sounds like Zoot. Don’t think I’ve heard this before. 14 “I’ll See You Again”? Is it a harp? Cute! Highly entertaining disc, Hans – good job. Thanks. Sorry I couldn’t contribute much. Awaiting the big guns now.

1 Strange mixture – rooty tootie start and pullen-like glissandos on the piano. No clue about anything. 2 Nearer to my usual fare but still no ideas – like it though. 3 Distinct Messengers feel but that’s partly because of the tune – E T A by Bobby Watson. I don’t recognize any of the players here but I don’t think it is the Messengers. Right up my alley though. 4 “Time After Time” – nice! Sounds a little like Chet but don’t think it is. 5 Don’t know the tune here but again I like this. No clue. 6 Ditto. 7 Not keen! 8 Is it two pianos? Sounds good, got a sort of west coast feel to the piano rhythm – Pete Jolly, someone like that? Bet I’m very wide of the mark. 9 “Rhythm-a-ning” – like it- don’t know who. 10 “Cheryl” – pianist’s style seems not at all familiar; a rather quirky but not unattractive rhythm. “East is east” quote – “sings” a bit. I will venture an opinion that the alto is Herb Geller though. 11 NDR big band? NMCOT. Don’t know the tune – vinyl from the clicks etc. 12 Mixture of “What is this thing” and “Hot House”. Good trumpet – sounds familiar in parts but can’t produce a name. Good one. 13 “Cherokee” – Konitz- like, but not I believe. 14 “I Want to be Happy” – they are by the sounds of it. Circus music? Thanks for a great disc, Hans – fun almost all the way.

it's a strain (been ready for days now).

I might be able to wait that long but...
