  1. I'm happy to run you a copy and post it over, Tooter. Won't arrive before Easter though. Let me know if you need it. Thanks a lot, sidewinder - I'll take you up on that if it doesn't come early next week.
  2. I can see at least one other UK resident has his but disc has still not arrived here. I've had this problem before and think it is because of an unreliable local delivery service - they put mail into the wrong houses and some residents will pass them on, others don't bother. So cannot join in the discussion until at least after Easter, if then.
  3. Okay, you're in, Sidewinder. Yes, I did get your email about Ronnie Ross LP and replied. Apparently you didn't get it so will send the same to you as a PM now. Comments about cover are being passed on - thanks for them.
  4. Duly signed up! Comment on cover passed on - thanks.
  5. A substantial amount of BFT35 discussion already so I'd better get going with the recruitment drive for BFT36. Here is your chance to climb aboard the bandwagon. Please send me a PM if you would like to be included. There will be just one CD consisting of 16 tracks, 79 minutes in all. The theme is clear from the cover herewith, which I would like to say is all my own work but it isn't. It was created, despite serious illness, by my best friend Jazzman4133 who is not only a genius at this kind of thing but the best friend anyone could have. Here is the list of those who are signed up. King Ubu - received MartyJazz - received mikeweil - received Red - received sidewinder - received Stereojack - received Bright Moments - received Tjobbe - received Stefan Wood Dutchmanx - received Steven - received couw - received marcoliv brad - received durium - received wordsandsounds - received naos - being sent on-line
  6. Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most is one of my favourites but there are many, many more.

I can do May if you like, Mike. Let me know.
  9. Some of the artists I’m sure I know but just can’t come up with the names, as usual. I thought 1. was Kenny Dorham at first but King Ubu has hinted that this is wrong. In a previous BFT, a long time ago, I guessed KD for, if I remember correctly, Roger Guerin. So maybe it’s him on trumpet. It might fit with the French connection, if there is one. I know the tunes of both 5. and 6. – “Minor Groove” and “My Romance” respectively but have no ideas as to who players are. Sounds very like “The Preacher” by Horace Silver in 13. sometimes, but not always. 14. is a tune I know, very catchy, by a favourite tenor player – Phil Urso. Called “Extra Mild” and to me it sounds so much like a Jimmy Heath composition. The connection is the album [Playboys] for which Heath wrote the music I think and on which Urso played, together with of course Chet Baker and Art Pepper. So could it be Phil Urso playing here? One of the tenors sounds very like Tubby Hayes somehow but that doesn’t make much sense. Thanks a lot for an extremely enjoyable disc, Brownie. A modest start indeed!

Thank you for all the recent information, Couw. It has kept me busy for quite a while already and will continue to do so for some time yet! I have posted the [Newport] picture onto our website (www.ronnieross.com). I have also deleted the Vic Lewis entry from the missing covers list and will be looking into the this question. I was aware of the boxed set but as Ronnie Ross only appears in two tracks, it seems a bit much to list them all. I was hoping the original issue would surface, if indeed there was one. Alternatively, I might just leave it at the two tracks. So here is the up-to-date list - not many more to go! Note: list moved to later post - May 4 2006

At last I'm getting off the unlucky thirteen! Another cover picture located which reduces the list to twelve.

PM just sent. Sure to be good.
  15. National Jazz Federation Modern Jazz Concert - February 28 1954 - almost fifty two years ago. The earliest Ronnie Ross (playing tenor) I've got, when he was still in the army. Rough recording but I'm trying to clean it up. Side one by a quintet led by Derek Smith, who later departed for the USA. Don Renedell also on tenor. The second side is by a group led by Tony Kinsey, with Tommy Whittle on tenor.
  16. 5 - Well, I've listened and I'm convinced it is Hugh Lawson. I'll stick with him. Could it be Bennie Maupin on tenor? Sure I've heard the trombone many times but can't think of a name. Where does this leave me? Coltrane???
  17. Ah, I see! I'm now sure about 1, although I was virtually certain before. So that must be one artist and both sidemen ... Assuming it really is Coltrane and as I'm convinced of Joobobie, it can't be Hugh Lawson on piano playing on his own composition. Not getting very far. Will listen again, more carefully.
  18. Three tries at putting in a link, none of which worked, so I'll just come out with it, as it looks as if I could have been wrong from your comments, Randy. No-one has to read it if they don't want to know. Don't read any further if you want to stay in the dark. 1 - Mary Lou Williams album [Free Spirits] with Buster Williams on bass and Mickey Roker on drums. The tune, Pale Blue by the bassist. I thought I knew this straight off as it's such a favourite album and the question about the tune came up not long ago elsewhere (king ubu - remember, if you read this?). And I'm pretty sure about Joobobie so that makes two tunes if I'm right.
  19. Hey, no other comments yet and at least an hour and a half has elapsed since this thread started! I was hoping to read some of the answers by now. Hurry, hurry!
  20. A flying start which then took a bit of a nose dive. I can nail the first one - one of my favourite albums. Pianist and bass player not related, and the latter composed this very nice blues - not at all colourless. Enough said? After the first, the music strikes off into areas I am not accustomed to, so I know very little I'm afraid. I didn't like the styles of 2, 3 and 4 at all and 5 also gives me little to comment on except that I know the tune and am betting that the pianist here is the composer; "Joobobie" by Hugh Lawson. The version I'm familiar with was led by Charlie Rouse - I don't know this rendering at all. Too heavy for me, particularly the tenor playing. Wild guess - John Stubblefield? 6 I found far more attractive but I haven't a clue. 7 I didn't relate to at all and just as clueless. 8 - I don't really listen to much Coltrane of this period from choice, limiting myself to his earlier material of course, but I suppose it's him with McCoy Tyner. Don't know what it is though and as 9 is beyond me too that leaves plenty unidentified from this ideal length BFT. Should I have been trying to guess a theme? If so, I can't. Despite much of the music being strange to me, Randy, I did enjoy some of it. I tried to come to terms with the other material but with limited success.
  21. Mine has arrived, Randy - thanks a lot. I'm listening right now and comments will be ready soon.

Another album obtained, so here's the cover picture. I just had two EP covers before, didn't know an LP had been issued. All details on our site now (www.ronnieross.com). Still thirteen on the list though.

Lots of new additions to the Ronnie Ross Jazz Discography www.ronnieross.com lately, many without cover pictures because they are of broadcast sessions rather than albums. But two are albums and here they are. These do not bring down the list of cover pictures sought because I didn't know about them before.
