  1. How I found my way into the Funny Rat thread: searching for "Tom Cora" (the late, great cellist). Haven't read the whole thing, but dip into it here and there. Other long threads? Unless I've been following one as it grows, I've learned to avoid them out of what's probably the opposite of laziness: the vestiges of my work ethic and an appreciation for how much time they can suck away from things that I actually NEED to do... Like couw, I'm not reading every article posted in Politics these days, either...

    bassoon jazz

Leslie Ross is a bassoonist who's mostly played "free-improv" -- if you know New York, you know Roulette is the venue for her. Plus the occasional Eugene Chadbourne recording. Given the need to make a living , in the last decade she has pretty much devoted herself to building/repairing bassoons (Ross Bassoons, workshop photos).

  4. If this should be moved to politics -- will someone tell me how to do it??? Thanks!
  5. Go, Tiffany! __________ Edit regarding thread title: I know that technically there IS no "Board of Ed" in NYC anymore -- it's now the "Education Dept" -- but I liked the rhythm better, and the echo of "Brown v. Board of Education."
  6. In the year 1422, Ketsugan, Zen teacher, performs exorcisms to free aizoji temple. So you should be just fine, Free For All....
  7. couw, you mean you've been waiting since 5 June???!!! Will-power! Stefan, once again:
  8. Same here. For a Lester Young tribute, Byron messes around too much, and his tone is not as sweet. Why do they record after only one day of playing together? I will have a listen first before buying. "De gustibus non est disputandum..." I guess. I'm a big fan, and I think "sweet" applies to some favorite tracks: Estrellita (first 6 musicians CD), Allure of Entanglement (No Vibe Zone), Basquiat (Romance w/ the Unseen). Oh well. Don and Jason played a weeklong stand together at the Vanguard last winter (with Billy Hart and Lonnie Plaxico, doing a lot of the material on this new release), and Don and Jack have played together in numerous contexts -- I'm looking forward to this.
  9. I would definitely second Joe's recommendation: Roger Tory Peterson's Field Guide to Birds. (I actually have the Peterson double-LP of bird calls, too! Has THAT been re-released on CD???!!!) But I googled "field guide birds" and found enature.com which might be helpful...
  10. Both of these, Brownie???
  11. Hey, I offered "a form of thanks" to AAJ/Mike Ricci, too! But do I have to do it everytime I go there??? That would seem kind of obsequious to me. And, correct me if I'm wrong -- AAJ does seem more of a public business venture than here, for instance. (Where I think it's time again to say THANK YOU to Organissimo the band, collectively, and Jim A. individually. )
  12. Guess "nuclear power" doesn't really need candles on the cake...
  13. Googling around for some reason today, I came across this post Jason Moran on Jazzcorner Speakeasy (in the Classifieds, because he was selling some Eames chairs!!!):
  14. I DID like driving on the Afsluitdijk...
  15. See, the New River Gorge bridge doesn't look scary to me -- guess it's the arch below, and the fact that you're only at maximum height above the river for, like, a quarter of the length at most. Because the gorge is a gorge! A quick deep slash. The Royal Gorge looks a little scarier, but still, looks like you get from rocky top to rocky top pretty quickly. But those two white pillars, supposedly taller than the Eiffel Tower -- and no return to level ground in sight in that panoramic picture from Millau -- well -- have fun, Brownie!
  16. Well, I guess I'd have to be in the back seat cowering under a blanket!!!
  17. I know -- it seems psychotic to me! I saw this in the paper right before I fell asleep last night, and I woke up wondering if I had only dreamed this story. 900 feet above the river! Eiffel Tower (sans TV antenna) = 986 feet! Observatory deck of Empire State Building = 1050 feet!
  18. Can't find the entire text that was in yesterday's New York Times, only this much: The original short article went on to say that there were no provisions to help drivers who freaked out in the middle of the bridge -- and that the same designer was responsible for London's Millennium Bridge which [according to CNN on 2/24/2002J "has re-opened to the public after a £5 million ($7 million) repair programme to correct a wobble which forced its closure after just three days." I'm not afraid to fly in an airplane, and the bridge looks breathtaking, but if I'm driving from Barcelona into France, I'm taking the low road!!!
  19. What book is this? (Interesting how this has become a dual topic thread) From THIS thread.
  20. Oops!!! Uh -- "you're welcome" ??? or "Sorry"???!!!
  21. Life's a bitch! No, I can relate...sometimes it seems the more I run, the more I weigh. WTF???!!! Or, as 7/4 would "say," Are you only going by your weight, on a scale? Muscle is considerably denser than fat. A 200-pound person with a lot of muscle looks considerably trimmer (and is healthier) than a 200-pounder with a high body-fat percentage. If you're really working out a lot, you should also consider your clothes size as a vindication, not just the scale.
  22. Also: Elvin Jones Memorial Service will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 26 at the Riverside Church (490 Riverside Drive at 120th Street). Hank Jones, Billy Taylor, Ravi Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner are among the scheduled guests.
