What have you done for a living?
maren replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
No, no -- EXACTLY my time! I was a freshman in the fall of 1970 and lived in Madison for the next 7 years. I know this has come up before between me and Chuck -- not that we remember meeting, but I certainly bought records there. I think this came up on a thread about AEC at the Newman Center? I missed that concert, but went to a number of Cecil Taylor's at the music school when he was a visiting professor. (And saw John Berryman read at the Newman Center -- but I think that was before YOUR time!) Poets in Madison? I knew people who knew the looniest ones... -

God, Keanu Reeves is horrible...
maren replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Never watched WHAT'S HAPPENIN' Agree about Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart?) But the father from ALF? Max Wright? I think he's great!!! His voice is totally annoying (I always thought SNL should get him to play Sen. Joe Lieberman -- they are aural dead ringers -- whine for whine!) so he needs to be in a sharper setting than ALF was -- did anybody ever see a very short-lived NBC sitcom called "Buffalo Bill" ??? 1983. Ahead of its time. Too biting for network TV. Dabney Coleman as a local TV star you love to hate, Max Wright as his terrified, cringing "boss" -- plus Joanna Gleason and a very young Geena Davis. Anyway, loved Max Wright in that, so I have a soft spot for him. -
Those are a couple of cute pink puppies!!! If space becomes an issue, maybe the Beanie Babies can take up residence in the gold-rimmed beer glasses???

Keanu Reeves is "Ted" (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey) ! He should've left it at that! EDIT: To quote Jazzmoose: "Damn, I should have read further -- you guys (Ron S, Big Al, B3-er) are onto him!" -
Exactly. RIP. (Just last week I noticed Ruby Dee on Channel 11 in NYC, doing a solo movie commentary of the type that she and Ossie Davis had been doing together for years -- thought at that moment that he must have been sick. My condolences to her -- what a long and beautiful partnership they had.)

Ooooohhhh! -
Speaking of books, the opening line of the original Dr. Spock is a good one: "Relax -- you know more than you think you do."

Laton, Really liked "Pest Control Man" -- read it in Chicago Review online. As soon as cash flow permits, I'm looking forward to reading your whole book.

That was my first thought, too... Or is it ? Or a variation on ?

At last !!! Congratulations to all three of you!!! Melissa looks fantastic, the beautiful Milo looks like he's happily sleeping off the big journey -- and John, you have that incredulous, awed and devoted new-dad countenance! What a great-looking family!

What does everyone do for a living?

I've worked in the same research hospital for 18 years: "research grants coordinator" or some such thing. Write/copy-edit/ghostwrite/re-write things like original research papers, grant applications, grant progress reports, patient informed-consent forms, clinical trial protocols and case report forms... Also computer graphics (tables, graphs, charts, line drawings, photomicrographs) to accompany the reports... Also slides to present the work at conferences... Also some actual research that gets my name on a few papers: chart review, meta-analyses, literature review. In the field of immunology/autoimmunity. B.S. in biology... which took a while to get because I kept switching between pre-med and music... (segue to) lapsed semi-career playing electric bass (roughly 1979-1999) -- see "musicians' rant" in Musicians' Forum for explanation of lapsed-ness!!! mother of a 21-year-old... -
oooops....this is kinda freaky!

Don't know if that's gonna happen, but I've been at every one of the concerts in his Symphony Space series, and loved them!!! What has really come across in this series is his love for working musicians! Past and present. Each installment has been a showcase for bands/bandleaders with a distinctive instrumental stamp -- and he's put together a group (pretty consistent personnel over 5 years, plus guests) who can pull off these tributes. Francis Davis expresses it pretty well.
