  1. Yeah, I love everything I've heard by him. His comping is a gas! I heard that he recorded again a couple of years ago, and that a cd was supposedly released in Japan, but I have yet to find any confirmation of this. If anyone has seen another Coggins leader session (besides "Gil's Mood") please post about it. RIP Gil Coggins.
  2. Walter Perkins was a great SWINGING drummer! A great example of his playing is on the Carmen McRae Jazz Casual video. God Bless Walter Perkins.
  3. Also these pianists: Beryl Booker, Hazel Scott, Una Mae Carlisle (vocalist as well), and Hadda Brooks (also vocalist)
  4. I don't think these three have been mentioned: Valaida Snow (trumpet) Trudy Pitts (wonderful B-3 player and pianist) Dorothy Ashby (one of the few swingin' harpists)
  5. Elmo & Philly are a special combination! The Final Sessions are beautiful! (And John Ore plays beautifully as well.) Some of my favorite Hope, but I like everything he did. Sure would LOVE to hear the band he had in the mid to late 60's that apparently included the GREAT Tina Brooks!
  6. Oops, forgot to mention: Connie Kay Ed Thigpen Paul Motian Grady Tate Donald Bailey Joe Dukes Idris Muhammad Mickey Roker Clifford Jarvis Good grief, I think I should go to bed now before this gets even more out of hand!
  7. Great list Mike, Thanks for the post!! In addition, I would mention: O'Neil Spencer Sam Woodyard Sonny Payne Gus Johnson Joe Harris Osie Johnson Charles "Specs" Wright Charli Persip Albert "Tootie" Heath Frankie Dunlop Ben Riley Roy McCurdy Louis Hayes James Black Roy Brooks G.T. Hogan Joe Chambers Frank Butler J.C. Heard I know they're not all innovators, but they certainly have identifiable sounds, and they have all made some beautiful lasting AND swinging music. All part of a great and extensive lineage. I guess a list like this could go on for days! And I definitely second the mention of A.T., O. Jackson, Jimmy Cobb, Vernel Fournier, etc. Sorry, I didn't have time to list the birth dates, etc.
  8. Very nice interview! I'm curious to hear that recording. Thanks for posting that.
  9. Yes, the Storyville cd is the Pumpkin recordings, although it does not include ALL of them. The "Classics In Stride" lp is reissued in it's entirety (makes up the first 14 tracks I believe) and the "Harlem Stride Classics" lp is represented by the remaining tracks on the cd, but with about 4 tunes omitted. INCREDIBLE PLAYING! GET IT! Does anybody have the Lambert "Giant Stride" lp on Circle (or was it Solo Art?)?
  10. Brownian, you won't be dissapointed. I have the lp that matches up with the second cd shown above. Great stuff; surprisingly good sound quality. I've never heard the first session mentioned, but I'm sure it's great as well. There can never be enough Lucky Thompson for sure!
