  1. Still no Gigolo! Great list though! Keep 'em comin'!
  2. I see that Righteous Buddha is playing with Hairy Apes BMX this week in Austin. Big Al, if you are joking about a road trip, you should get serious! Hairy Apes BMX is an interesting group. They feature a guy on vibes who plays as the fourth member of Garage a tois (with Charlie Hunter, Stanton Moore, and Skerik) This should be a great show. I wish I could go! Another thought along the "jam bands" / "acid jazz" theme: Is anyone familiar with THE DUO? They are an organ / drum duo that are in NYC. Apparently playing one of MMWs old weekly gigs. Some pretty wild stuff. Covers of Zeppelin and the like. They have some live discs out and are in the studio for their debut on ropeadope. Ropeadope is assembling quite a stable of good groups. Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Charlie Hunter, The Duo, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Antibalas etc Is this stuff Greaze? I consider it a modern movement in the grease scene. Neo-greaze if you will. Do we need another thread for this?
  3. HOOTIN' AND TOOTIN' is all it was hyped to be. A great disc! I love the bluesy guitar work. The insert was in shambles and the label side has a spot that appears worn. It scares me a little so I think I'll burn a copy for backup. This CD, booklet and insert are by far the worst in my collection, but oh, the MUSIC! The sweet, GREAZY music! Can anyone scan the tray insert and post it for me? I already printed another cover from that Japanese cover site.
  4. You should enter that in the organissimo T shirt contest (if it hasn't already ended)
  5. Check out this link I found at ropeadope.com. Warning: this link contains some photos of human copulation (ie the wild thang) hudda thunk?
  6. Got a "personal" call from BMG on Saturday. They were offering 12 for the price of three. They were very flexible on the offer. They let me substitute the disc they wanted to send and they let me get only two so my deal ended up being 8 for the price of two. The same as buy one get three free EXCEPT I can get multi disc sets as my free ones. I went with Newk's Time and Rockin' the Boat and plan to get the Byrd double RVG as a free one.
  7. I think the Spanish are guilty of playing great soccer and not getting results. At times they looked very good in last few World Cups and on paper they have all the makings of a great team but it never seems to translate into results on a consistent basis.
  8. This is what I predict the Gigolo cover will look like when it finally comes out. (Probably March 2010)
  9. Got my order from cduniverse today, two days after release date!!! I think I've found a new hookup. At least for the new RVG releases.
  10. The Funny Rat thread for me as well. I have no idea what it's about and often feel like I may be missing out on something because it seems so popular but I just can't put forth the effort to read the thing.
  11. By the way, I would never upgrade RVGs for packaging only. But the fact that the thought even enters my mind indicates a bit of OCD. However, I would change my Spainish Blue Notes for US releases in a heartbeat even if the sound quality is not as good. The blueness of the Spainish releases repulses me!
  12. This batch is the first that I have preordered from CDUniverse. When can I expect the discs? I had been ordering from deepdiscountcd.com and my orders took a couple weeks to come in. I switched to CDuniverse for a little more prompt delivery. (I hope).
  13. These packaging changes are very disturbing to OCDers as myself. THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE THE SAME!! It's a series!!! I was barely dealing with the variences in the the insert art and then the EMI emblem appeared! I was holding it together pretty well but now I'm not sure I can! If the previous titles are ever released in similar packaging I might be tempted to upgrade for packaging reasons which I know is totally unreasonable and hopefully my wife would intervene.
  14. I just got back from Florida and I brought two disc cases. One just for me, all jazz, mostly Blue Note. The other a rock / pop mix for the car. The Funk and Disco compilations from Walmart are great driving music. We also had Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jet, Aretha, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd. Actually I didn't get to listen to too many discs during the week as we were watching videos for the kids in the car and chasing kids while at the beach.
  15. I think this guy must have 23 "jazz" discs in his collection, all of them listed. The Sade and Clapton are just fillers to get to 25. Actually we shouldn't be too hard on the poor guy. Anyone who tries to discover jazz at their local music store will end up with a similar collection. (Not even Kind Of Blue? That's indicative of how bad the situation is.) I've said it before, jazz doesn't sell because it's not for sale.
  16. Today's lunch: Prime rib, stuffed baked potato, roll. (skipped the salad - just empty filler )
  17. When I first saw this I missed the author's comments. They make it even more hilarious. "Chuck Loeb is all there is and more" Are you kidding me??!!
  18. Check out this list of "must own" jazz titles on Amazon.com link Don't you dare ask me which one is the ONE!
  19. I just picked up Fred Jackson HOOTIN' AND TOOTIN' on half.com for $12.99! At first, it would let me check out with it so I thought someone had grabbed it before me but I finally got it. I think I electronically ripped it out of some poor Joe's hands.
  20. Ahh, It's good to see the old greaze pit getting some action. Good greaze always floats to the top! Thanks again Big Al for starting it all.
  21. I like Tom Cat and Free For All and Indestructible and Caddy For Daddy and Blue Train and anything else with Curtis Fuller on it. I think I just like trombones more than even I realize.
  22. 14 out of 16. It's more fun to try to figure out which men are drag queens when they are dressed as men. (Usually the painted on eyebrows give it away)
  23. When my wife went back to work after our first, I took all the vacation I had and Mr Mommed it for 2-3 weeks. It really was a great experience a lot of dads miss out on. I learned a whooooole lot during that time and appreciate all my wife does all the more. I wish I could have done it with my other two but my schedule didn't allow it. By the way, I think I'm starting to love Zora too!! She's so cute!
  24. I like VERY SAXY. Shirley steals the show! Should be called VERY SHIRLEY. I do like the Freddie Roach disc although he is certainly not a Jimmy Smith, John Patton or Larry Young. I also picked up the Spainish version of DOWN TO EARTH not too long ago and it's about the same story.
  25. I went ahead and did a little internet research and as the picture indicates (thank you jazz shrink), the euphonium is very similar to a baritone and the two are often confused. It has a "lighter" sound and is similar in timbre to a trombone. I guess in my mind I had it pitched deeper than a baritone and closer to a tuba. Ya' learn something new every day!
