I will forgive the breech of greaze etiquette this time (and ONLY this time! ) Everyone on this board knows that GREAZE is spelled with a "Z" and that this post belongs in the KEEPIN' IT GREAZY thread. Now back to the topic - How about some early Kool and the Gang?

I know that greaze is in the eye of the beholder, but how a list of the greaziest can not have any LONNIE SMITH on it is beyond me. LIVE AT THE CLUB MOSAMBIQUE is the meaning of greaze in my dictionary. "I can't stand it..." My list looks something like this (obviously excluding modern acts like MMW, Galactic, Charlie Hunter etc and limitiing it to Blue Note dates including an organ because I want to) In no particular order 1 MIDNIGHT CREEPER - Lou Donaldson (George Benson doing Grant Green better than Green! - Yeah, I said it.) 2 LIVE AT THE CLUB MOZAMBIQUE - Lonnie Smith (with again, George Benson ("I can't stand it...")) 3 BLUE JOHN - Big John Patton (I know this may not be Patton's best playing but the presence of George Braith playing that double sax contraption makes this a NASTY date) 4 HOOTIN' AND TOOTIN' - Fred Jackson 5 BLUE MODE - Reuben Wilson 6 NEVER LET ME GO - Stanley Turrentine (Shirley Scott makes the date) 7 ANYTHING BY- Jimmy Smith (I was going to say THE SERMON but how can you not say BACK TO THE SHACK? Easily could say PRAYER MEETING, or even ROCKIN' THE BOAT as the presence of Papa Lou make them some of Jimmy's greaziest) 8 THE WORM - Jimmy McGriff 9 DOWN HOME STYLE - Jack McDuff (the cover alone could get this one included) 10 STOP AND LISTEN - Baby Face Willette (I don't have FACE TO FACE as it has become quite hard to come by - don't have a hissy, I'll get it when I can!) There it is - fire away!

Well, I've just had the worst traveling experience of my life. Yesterday, my family and I packed up the family truckster and headed south on our 10 hour journey to Baton Rouge for Christmas at the grandparents! WE made the first leg of the trip down to Fort Smith, Arkansas in the usual 45 minutes and the roads look great. I-40 was a bit icy and the 3 hour drive to Conway Arkansas has taken 5 1/2. A little frustrated but the roads are thawing out and we expected some delays with the weather so spirits are still high. Just outside Conway (about 25 miles from Little Rock) the traffic comes to a complete stop. I mean a COMPLETE STOP! People out of their cars. Not an inch in about a 1/2 hour. Talked with a trucker who confirmed this 25 mile stretch of road was a parking lot. No accident, no severe road conditions, no alien invasion but cars are simply not moving. The low estimate to get to Little Rock from there 4 to 6 hours. Personally I thought it would probably be longer. This would place the 3 1/4 hour ride to LR over the 10 hour mark. I reasoned that in less time than that, I could go back to Fort Smith and try to drive down through Texarkana to Shreveport then on to Baton Rouge. So we turned around. Going back west, the roads were even better and in Fort Smith there was no sign of trouble at all. So now a 45 minute drive to Fort Smith has taken 9 hours. At a gas station however, I was informed that a bit south of Fort Smith they had 6 inches of snow and the conditions were much worse. Now it was dark and with 3 kids and my wife in the vehicle, I wasn't going to risk the mountainous roads even in a 4 wheel drive. So we decided to go back home! 10 hours of driving, a tank of gas, 2 meals on the road all with three kids 5, 3 and 1 yr old and we're BACK HOME! Wish me luck as we embark again this morning to attempt to get to Baton Rouge for Christmas.

Happy Birthday THE SIDEWINDER!! recorded this date in 1963

That's probably why they knew they weren't old enough to BUY cigarettes. "Uh, Mr. Henry, could I bum another cigarette from you?" "You damn kids are smoking up all my cigarettes! These things ain't free you know. I gotta mind to tell your mama! Somebody better come up with some money. "
-
I hope his mom doesn't see that or he'll be in BIG trouble.
-
I didn't see the pictures but did see that no one in band was old enough to buy cigarettes!

Yeah, I think you've got a few more entries than me! I really just did it to catalogue my collection and once I got started I didn't know when to quit (like maybe just title and artist) so next thing I know I've got quite a bit of info to play with. I might try to see if I can use Brian to fill in my data rather than typing all this.

Did you see the spinning girl at the link? I've got girls in dance and believe me I didn't see anything like that at their recital last fall!

OK, I'm not a computer nerd. I am a Blue Note nerd! I have been reentering my Blue Notes into a database (Microsoft Works) Lost what I had previously when my last computer crashed. You can find out some interesting things by manipulating the data. Also when you're entering the data. When I'm finished I could make it availabe to anyone else that is interested. Some interesting things so far: Indestructible RVG states track #7 was recorded on 4-15-64. There's only 6 tracks! Of the 5 Jackie McLean titles I've entered so far, he used 5 different pianist, five different bassist, and 4 different drummers (Billy Higgins repeats once) What's up with that? Was he hard to work with or did he just like to mix it up? I've really just begun so I expect I'll find a lot of interesting fact before it's all in.

What can you say but WOW! She looks so comfortable, so effortless, she's not even looking.

No opinions about SAN FRANCISCO?... Bobby Hutcherson?... Harold Land?... Mickey Roker?... the funky tune that US3 made into LAZY DAY?... Anyone?... Anyone?

I hope this means you have an EXTRA copy! That is my favorite Christmas CD of all time. (Merry Ole Soul a close second)

Where does one go to fine old radio broadcasts?

Sherman, set the WABAC machine to 1932. -
(Begin Halelujah chorus now) Thank you for the link. I'm a bit embarassed by my overreaction. Luckily, you guys did not see me in person. Unfortunately, my wife did. She said "I knew you were obsessed with your CDs but now I realize you are a CD NERD!" I guess I can use that Ipod money to buy more CDs!! (Continue Halelujah chorus until tomorrow at this time)

I have seen talk on the board about CDs developing pin holes. I was always in denial that this could ever happen to me. Tonight for some reason I decided to examine my oldest CD, George Harrison's CLOUD NINE from back in 1988. Sure enough, riddled with pin holes. I panicked! Next I examined my Beatles discs which were also purchased back in the late eighties. Pinholes!! Now I'm freakin! On to my beloved jazz. My oldest- Hank Mobley's DIPPIN'. Sure enough, PINHOLES!! My wife thinks I'm crazy but I'm super anxious that my whole collection that I've spent thousands on, in slowly melting away! So my question is, how long before the discs become unplayable? I seem to recall someone saying that only early disc were at risk due to a change in manufacturing. Is this true or this just my mind trying to tell myself that everything is gonna be alright. If all my disc are rotting, I'm about to download them, get an Ipod and sell those suckers on the internet while they are still worth the aluminum they're made of!

I've decided to get the PRISONER first. Now, on Hutcherson and SAN FRANCISCO!
-
I've had a stroke of good luck and my CD slush fund got a big boost so I'm going to have several requests for recs. (I will try to avoid clogging up the Recommendations Section so I'm going to ask them all here) Question 2: Which Bobby Hutcherson to get? All I have with him as a leader is DIALOGUE. (one of my initial rules of jazz listening was NO FLUTE and NO VIBES but I've come around a bit) I caught some samples of SAN FRANCISCO and was kinda diggin' it but I never hear this one talked about on the board.
-
I think the Silver is definitely closer to my preferred style (hard bop, soul jazz, grease, funk) but I like to mix it up and check out different styles as well and I have all the other Silver RVGs so I think I'm going with THE PRISONER. Depending on what I get for Christmas (Come on family, you can do it, just a couple Selects, PLEASE.) I may have enough CD money to get both!

I don't know if I would call that hoax. If that fish isn't made of rubber, that's no hoax. If the "real" fish from Texoma weighed 121 lbs that one in first picture from the Po River must be 300. These fish may help explain how Jesus fed the multitudes Sallie Sue: "Hey, Bubba how many d'ya catch? Your Mom 'n them is coming over to eat tonight." Bubba: "Just one." Sallie Sue: "ONE! You stupid, good fer nuthin, lazy, no fish catchin' son of a..." (she sees the catfish) "... that'll do as long as your Uncle Henry don't come. Fire up the pot Bubba we got us a fish to fry!"

A guy here at work says he's seen that pic before and says it's an internet hoax. Speaking of hoaxes, did any one see THIS about the Alaskan Grizzly? The third picture is added picture which is gross enough on its own but not related to the bear. The Bear was actually ONLY 10.5 feet tall and weigh about 1000 lbs instead of the 12.5 ft and 1600 lbs reported. He did not really charge the guy and he hadn't eaten two human in the past 72 hrs. Still that's one big bear!!

These are 2 RVGs I don't have and have never really been all that excited about getting. I've got a little CD money to burn and thought it was time to spring for one or the other. Which should it be? Interesting thing I noticed while browsing the Blue Note site, if you click on BUY IT NOW it links to Amazon.com!! Not Blue Note merchandise or even True Blue but Amazon!

I happen to grab Booker Ervin STRUCTURALLY SOUND to listen to and appropriately enough there is a version of "White Christmas" on it. Any other Christmas tunes tucked away on non Christmas albums. I would like to make a jazz Christmas compilation and wonder if my collection is hiding any others. (My collection is heavy with Blue Note and light on Verve, Columbia and Prestige.) I know about Jimmy Smith's "Baby Its Cold Outside" and "Greensleeves" Also... Is "My Favorite Things" considered a Christmas song? I've heard it several times this season in that setting. I know THE SOUND OF MUSIC takes place around Christmas time but I never thought of this one as a Christmas tune. On the other hand, it kinda sounds Christmasy in a way.
