I think he's an alright guy... but his keyboard must SUCK! I haven't seen so many typos and spelling errors since that hypothetical monkey typed GONE WITH THE WIND.
-
Personnel includes: George Benson (vocals, guitar); Lonnie Smith (Hammond organ); King Curtis (tenor saxophone); Ron Cuber (baritone saxophone); Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Benny Green (trombone) With a lineup like that, what more could be said.

The latest Conns are available. I've got the Hill and the Young. Are any of the others worth picking up?
-
I Half.com'ed my McMasters and Spanish Blue Notes as soon as these titles were announced. Been getting by with CDRs. Never heard Basra, Heavy Soul or Hi Voltage so I am excited about this group. First time I've ordered all 6 in advance. I usually get the 3 that excite me the most then pick up the others down the road (hopefully from BMG.)

THE PRISONER arrived today, along with SAN FRANCISCO THE PRISONER is a bit more out than I usually like but I liked it at first listen which is saying a lot! Most of the time I have to warm up to an album like that. Thanks for the help. Not what I expected from the cover art at all. SAN FRANCISCO is pretty nice as well. Some good grooves. Hutcherson, Harold Land, Mickey Roker. I've come to realize that late '60s early '70s Blue Notes can be summarized as follows: produced by Duke Pearson or Francis Wolff = good, Mizell Brothers = bad.

10 Organ Records You Must Own To Post Here
scottb replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Forums Discussion
I'd never heard of McGriffs I'VE GOT A WOMAN before this thread, but after listening to some clips online, I am very excited about getting my hands on a copy! Someone on one of these lists threads had asked about some all stops out, balls to the wall playing. Well this is IT!! -
I've tried this and invariably they carry the ones I bought and not the ones I need. (It's a conspiracy, you see )
-
Add to this list Street Of Dreams - Grant Green
-
As I said before, please do not tempt my weak self control with Mosaic sets. I would love the Donaldson set as well as the Morgan, Parlan, Blakey, Blue Mitchell, Grant Green, Mobley, Jimmy Smith, Joe Pass, Django (get the picture?)
-
I've got a few Coltrane titles on Impulse and have been thinking about CRESCENT for some time now. When it comes to Mingus, I am lacking. I only have MINGUS AH UM. (don't shoot me! Just make a rec about my next mingus) I've got The Golden Circle discs and to be honest I donit get it yet. I give a listen every once in a while. I have about 15 Blakey titles, the Chambers Select, of course BLUE TRAIN and all the Hendersons which have been RVG'd.
-
I've got all the available Hill, GRASS ROOTS as well. I will certainly get the Select.
-
So far: $310 - 35 for San Francisco, The Prisoner, SFTNL - 15 for previous BMG order - 57 for Feb RVGs (order placed!) - 57 for Mar RVGs (as soon as I can) ------------------------------------- $ 146 left to play with.
-
I came across LEAPIN' AND LOPIN' in a used bin once and can't for the life of me remember why I didn't get it.
-
CD Universe has the February RVGs for their usual low price $8.39 Tina Brooks - True Blue Art Blakey - A Night In Tunisia Pete LaRoca - Basra Hank Mobley - Hi Voltage Johnny Coles - Little Johnny C Ike Quebec - Heavy Soul Also Available - Blue Note Perfect Takes - RVG (I guessing this is the interview disc) for $11.xx
-
OK, If I preorder all 12 Feb/March RVGs, (which is a great idea and exactly what I will do) That still leaves me $130 or so, plus my usual CD budget! The problem I have is that a lot CDs I have my eye on, I fear might get the RVG treatment and them I have to upgrade. This has happened to me more times than I care to admit. I think that if I rebought The Gigolo the cosmic forces would probably have it RVG'd. Here's a list of ones I've had my eye on for a while: Blues Walk Gravy Train Leapin' And Lopin' Crazy Baby Cornbread Caramba Peckin Time The Big Beat Any of these unlikely to get RVG'd?
-
I have a way to get a little extra cash on occasion. Not much, maybe $30 to $50 dollars every 4-6 months. I have a deal with my wife that this can supplement my CD budget (which is ridiculously low by this board's standards) Anyway, the point is that I made a big hit and suddenly I've got $300 to play with. So let me hear some recs! Just so you know, I'm more a collector of Blue Note than of jazz music in general. (This is how I try to limit my addiction) I've got just about all the RVGs, most of the in print Conns that I want, most of the Mosaic Selects that I want and have still been able to swear off the big Moasaics (so please don't tempt me with one of those) I will probaly get a few RVGs I don't have and a few selections off B3ers top organ discs that I don't have (can't tell you which ones because he's being pretty harsh over there on that thread, he might ban me!) SEARCH FOR THE NEW LAND, SAN FRANCISCO (Bobby Hutcherson), and THE PRISONER are on the way. No one had any comments about the Hutcherson but I decided to pull the trigger anyway based on the sound clips.

I'm an LSU alum and that game hurts. Not because of the loss so much as the way it happened. They really played a solid game defensively except on two plays. The first TD and the last play of the game. Throw in a blocked punt for a TD and you lose a game you should've won. All the hype about Saban the last few years, you gotta wonder. There were some real questionable coaching decisions. The biggest, in my opinion, when they sent in Flynn a redshirt freshman, after a 75 yd kickoff return and a 15 yd penalty to start the drive deep in Iowa territory. They went three and out and then attempted to fake a FG which failed. So starting with the best field position you could hope for they got zilch. LSU has done this all year long, having to come from behind too many times against teams like Troy and Oregon St and Ole Miss.

I left Young off my list because I don't consider him greazy. He's a genius but he doesn't meet the specifications of my list. If I were to make a top 10 organ album list, certainly he would be there and near the top!

"Honestly officer, this is my 'breathaphone,' I'm a drummer."
-
Congrats on a great review on the show at the Creole Gallery. I just had one question. "At one point, Marsh pulled out a little-used contraption Detroit drummer Roy Brooks used to call the “breathaphone” — plastic pipes through which air is sucked in and out of the drums" Does Randy's "breathaphone" look something like this:
-
Shirley's on mine by way of the Turrentine record.
-
That would be Freddie Roach. Baby Face is Crisco, baby, pure Crisco!
-
Thanks to Big Al for his unrelenting pimping of SIX VIEWS OF THE BLUES. I must've gotten this one with a bunch of other disc or just prior to an RVG release date because I had listened to it probably only 2-3 times. I broke it out yesterday to get Big Al off my back and enjoyed it much more than I remembered. Sometimes you're just not in the mood for the blues but yesterday I was feelin' it.

Have you no conscious man. You know most of us are anal retentive completists! Now I have to devote my life to finding these titles! It will probably lead to me losing my job, my family and all my other worldly belongings! I hope you're happy!

I know it's been mentioned above but HOOTIN' 'N' TOOTIN' deserves special recognition not only does the title contain 4 's , but the album contains the following tracks: Dippin' In The Bag Hootin' 'N Tootin' Easin' On Down Stretchin' Out
