rostasi, the people who came through his bands were incredible I saw The New Ice Age at the Last Resort in Athens, but they were appearing as the Hampton Geese Band at that show. Paul McCandless, Karl Ratzer, Billy McPherson. I see that Jimmy Herring, the fantastic jam guitarist with the Colonel's Aquarium Rescue Unit, is going on tour this fall with John McLaughlin. -

R.I.P. Col Bruce https://www.jambase.com/article/jam-scene-patriarch-col-bruce-hampton-died What a blast it was to catch this band in the Athens/Atlanta GA area back in the late 60's - early '70s. The last time I saw them a few years back, I drove up to ATL to catch a one-off reunion show at The Variety Playhouse. The last time before that, they opened for Mahavishnu Orchestra in ATL circa 1972, also causing me to do the five hour drive up to ATL. I saw Col Bruce many times, including spectacular shows with Aquarium Rescue Unit at the Fox Theater, opening for Widespread Panic. -

Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba - I Speak Fula (Out Here Records, 2009). Bassekou plays the ngoni, a traditional “spike lute” ancestor of the banjo, sharing its taut-skinned drum body, percussive attack, and varied picking techniques. Ngoni Ba is the first group built around not one but four ngoni‘s. Got to see these guys at Savannah Music Festival probably about the time this album came out; they were on a double bill with Bill Frisell. -
