Just a quick checking in - I'll admit I briefly skimmed the thread, though didn't click on any links, and tried my best to avoid any specific names or guesses. I just received my disc today (yesterday? Tuesday, anyway), and will try to get back with some guesses and thoughts within a day or two. I can say for sure that I know number 10, and have a feeling I know number 14, though. This is a strong disc, though, Couw... good work!

Okay, so top 2 requests seem to be: 1) Start earlier/keep it on longer 2) Post playlists. As for #2, we are working on it... gonna try to write a program that will automatically post it to the site as the radio show plays, with links to buy the discs they come from. This should happen within the next couple of weeks. WRT #1, I have just officially updated the schedule. The shows will now start at 4 PM on the appropriate day, run on their 3 hour loop and keep going late into the night. Thanks for listening and enjoy!

Since some actually seemed interested in this... I thought I'd go ahead and post the play list for tonight's show (Sunday 1/11) - this will give an idea of all the different shows... what kind of music you can find. Also, we'd love to see some more people comment on the reviews!

Anyway, the point of all that is if it sounds like the kind of thing you would enjoy, I encourage you to go to http://www.sudden-thoughts.com/radio and check out the schedule and tune in at least a couple times a week. Occasionally, I break with the schedule and do shows during the day and that kind of thing, so I'll make sure I update this thread with any news about that. Thanks for the interest, though!

couw - I was curious.... what'd you mean your first album was "supposed" to be Out to Lunch? You mean you were planning on buying it on the recommendation of a friend, or something much more nefarious?
-
Hmmm... sounds like a good BFT candidate (insert evil laugh here)

Hey guys- Trying to increase listenership on my radio show... tonight it's all classic stuff, with some rarer things thrown in. You can find it at http://www.sudden-thoughts.com/radio. You don't need any special software... just click on the link on the page above. Thanks for the interest... let me know what you think, and check back every week, as I constantly update the playlists.

Wow deus... that's pretty cool... I like mine a lot. Now I'll just have to find a decent printer to make it a reality
-
I also thought that first track was amazing. I still spin that one on a regular basis... though I wasn't sure the rest of the album lived up to that killer opening.
-
Yeah, I wholeheartedly support buying the Osby; I just thought it was the least interesting of his recent string of Blue Notes. I was just trying to come up with one that I had high expectations for that ended up not knocking me out. Like I said, it's definitely a good disc, just not as challenging as some of his others to these ears. BWTFDIK?

Actually, Nate's thrashing of the Ware disc was probably the #1 review I read in 2003, though I haven't heard the disc, so have no idea if I would agree with it. But your review was clever, concise and clear. Worst release for me was, hands down, Matthew Shipp's latest entry in the Blue Series Continuum. I like a lot of the stuff he's put out on Thirsty Ear, but hardly a single thing was working for me on this disc. But I'm not sure I expected much from this approach, so I don't know if it qualifies as most disappointing. I'll have to think some more about that... maybe Osby's St. Louis Shoes - good disc but pretty tame, all things considered.

Giants that are not signed to a label.

I remember indeed reading an article that said the inimitable Ms. Allen was indeed signed to Telarc now, and they had plans to start releasing new recordings from her on a regular basis. That is great news... she deserves it. The list of greats without a steady contract is great indeed. But I think a lot of artists are now looking to smaller labels and individual releases to market their talents, in these days of direct internet sales and what have you. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, as long as various independents come in to record interesting discs. Cecil, for instance, has put out a lot of great stuff in the last few years on labels like FMP, Intakt, and so on, so I hope he's at least able to make a living that way. -
I'm trying to get more people to check out my radio show, which happens four times a week. So for today only, I'm going to replay a show all afternoon and evening - it's about 3 hours long and on a loop. You can check it out here, and take a look at the normal schedule as well. You don't need any special software or anything, just click on the link on the page above. Thanks for listening!

I hate 99.9999% of all rap!!!!!

FWIW, I wrote a review of the latest Outkast here, which deals with it as serious art. I'm guessing some people here may not get into it, but it's important if you're interested in what creative younger black artists are doing. -
RE: Disc 1, Track 12 - on the rare occasions when I've listened to this group in public, I have received nothing but strange looks and not a little bit of ridicule. If you are trying to look hip, I don't recommend them. If you love music that takes chances, tries to surprise, and has a sense of humor... go for it.

Rarely seen jazz-oriented photos, ads, etc.

J.J. Johnson and Chico Hamilton for free?!?!?! You should print that out and wave it around at today's club owners in the Village. Though I wonder if that policy has something to do with why I've never heard of the Gold Bug before - couldn't have lasted too long. And come on, Chris... I think we all emceed a Coltrane 4tet gig once or twice in our lives. -
That is a LOOOOOOONG month, though, I will say.

I thought this was one of the funniest movies I've seen in a while. I liked the way there were a lot of out of nowhere jokes that they never really ended up explaining, and the way Billy Bob would deal with them.... A wooden pickle? The talking walnut? Strange but flipping funny in my book.

Wow Chris - excellent idea for a thread... it could become a real resource. I don't have much in the way of things other people haven't seen, so I'll just look forward to each new installment you have time to post. -

These shows will feature, respectively, current jazz (Tues), the jazz classics (Thurs), hip hop, reggae and other mixed music (Sat), and avant, free and out there stuff (Sun). The shows will start at 7pm and run till 10, with an immediate rebroadcast from 10 til 1am (all times are US Eastern Standard Time). You don't need any special software, just go to http://www.sudden-thoughts.com and click on the link we have there. Also, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get involved - register for an account so you can comment on reviews ... we're gonna have some upcoming promotions, so registering also gives you a chance to win some *free* music! Anyway, we also have an entry from Dom Minasi for our Rimes and Rheuminations that will go up later this week, and a new Label Watch for next week - plus we've been regularly updating the reviews. Thanks for visiting, and enjoy the music! -
Did you smack us with some of that jive-ass Crouch cat? It's just a weird enough guess to be possible.
-
Wow... that is pretty embarrassing. You listen to a record 30 times a day, think you really know the music... this was one of the only cuts I was sure I had down exactly. I was even ready to tell you the name of the track. Jeez... sorry if that was hard to understand - I had a foot shoved ankle-deep in my mouth. Anyway, the Dodds reissue is great; thanks for the compliment, Tom!
