  2. Ummm... maybe because his collection of prima donnas and whiners couldn't get their shit together for more than the first and last months of the season. Get Jackson coaching a team for once that doesn't have overpaid all-star talent 6 deep, and we can start to talk about him deserving an award for what he does. Booo
  3. Aha.. thanks Jim. Didn't realize that Morgan was from the same outfit. I figured some of it must have been previously available on CD, but it wasn't ringing any immediate bells. That would explain the lack of a web presence, though.
  4. From the Jazzmatazz site: Albert Ayler - Complete Live at Slug's Saloon Recordings (Lonehill) Apr 27 — 5/1/1966; 66-minutes Sonny Criss - Lost Recordings (Lonehill) Apr 27 — with five bonus tracks Eric Dolphy - Complete Memorial Album Sessions (Lonehill) Apr 27 — 78 minutes Bob Dorough & Sam Most Quartet - Complete Recordings (Lonehill) Apr 27 — with Bill Crow & Joe Morello; two-fer; 69 minutes with four bonus tracks Duke Ellington - 1967 European Tour: Complete Teatro Sistina Concert - 2 CDs (Lonehill) Apr 27 — 2/22/1967; 135 minutes; 26 tracks Booker Little - New York Session (Lonehill) Apr 27 — two sessions: one with Booker Ervin & one with an octet of Memphis musicians; includes one bonus track Gerry Mulligan & Art Farmer - Complete Live in Rome Concert (Lonehill) Apr 27 — 6/19/59; 71 minutes Anyone heard of this label? Some of this stuff sounds fascinating to me.... is any of it (other than the Ayler) available elsewhere? Where is this label from? I couldn't find a website, and a google search turned up virtually nothing.
  5. Just saw this Rooster... sorry to hear that. I grew up in KC, and in my subsequent visits back to town, have been through there a few times. One time when I was thinking about moving back to KC I even went there to ask them about employment opportunities, and they gave me a contact name that I have long since misplaced. I know what you mean about the racial stuff, but everyone in there was very nice to me and very helpful.... I didn't at all get the feeling that I had to prove myself as a white guy. Anyway, from what I know of reading your posts on this board, seems to me like you would have been a great candidate for the job. It's definitely their loss that they didn't even call you in for an interview. Having applied for hundreds of jobs in the last couple of years myself (some of which I cared as deeply about as you did this one) I have been surprised many times by how often I get completely ignored, even though I figured my qualifications and interests were very competitive. If anything, at least they have your information there now, and if something opens up in the future that you reapply for, maybe somebody in there will remember your resume and admire your persistence. Here's hoping, anyway...
  6. I'm probably one of the few big fans of hip hop around here - good hip hop - including some excellent female rappers. But I'm glad to see someone stupid like Nelly getting taken to task for kinds of stupid things he says/does. Nelly is hip hop like Kenny G is jazz, but unfortunately both of them seem to represent their respective genres in the public mind. So it's good to see some people saying this it-shay isn't acceptable.
  7. I gave them one game, and I was thinking that was pretty generous. It's really sad that they're gonna prove me right.
  8. Everything except the .mp3 clips now seems to be working fine... looks like I may be ordering some of these, for sure.
  9. Hmmm... every time I go to that link, it ends up redirecting me through to the Dischord site - I can't actually find anything dealing with the live releases themselves....
  10. I posted this on another board the other day before the playoffs got started, and I'm fairly confident in my picks. The only thing is that there are quite a few wild cards - for example the Sac-Dallas game the other night. Doug Christie came through in a big way, Bibby and Webber were playing well together - if they can keep that kind of play up, my predictions shoud hold up, I think. Minnesota over Denver, 4-1 Sacramento over Dallas, 4-3 San Antonio over Memphis, 4-2 LA over Houston, 4-1 Indiana over Boston, 4-1 New Orleans over Miami, 4-2 Detroit over Milwaukee, 4-0 New Jersey over New York, 4-1 Sacramento over Minnesota, 4-3 LA over San Antonio, 4-3 Indiana over New Orleans, 4-2 Detroit over New Jersey, 4-3 LA over Sacramento, 4-2 Indiana over Detroit, 4-2 Indiana over LA, 4-3 The W-L in each series are the biggest who-the-f-knows of the thing, as far as I'm concerned.
  11. According to ESPN tonight, looks like LeBron will get the nod. I think that's pretty typical for the NBA these days - going for flash over substance - so it doesn't really surprise me. I voted for 'Melo here, though.

  13. Not to be annoying, but I think the name of the song is "Las Cuevas de Mario".... I don't speak Spanish, but I don't think "curvevos" is a word. If so, someone should have let Laurie Pepper know.... her husband was writing tunes about the Curvevos of Mario. Maybe it was all that time in prison.....
  14. I picked up the Atomic/School Days double disc at the ACME festival here in Athens this last weekend. The group played a lot of stuff off of it, and absolutely tore the place up. The disc (after one listen) lives heartily up to the live show. Highly recommended stuff.
  15. My favorite Monk collaboration of all is with Blakey - drummer on both his first and last sessions. Bu seemed to understand Monk's rhythmic sense and what his music needed more than most.
  16. Hey thanks you guys! It really means a lot to know that some other people are appreciating all this fine music. gdogus - to be honest, I'm not much of a techie; my brother does all the actual *work* on the site (basically anything that's not content)... next time I will be sure to ask him about the possibility of getting a juiced-up stream running.... I'm not really sure what that entails, personally. 18. Well, due to their rules regarding the annual conference, my attendance there (after paying the fee) resulted in my becoming a member. I don't think I'm probably the most knowledgeable member on the board (I wouldn't consider myself an "active" member, no matter what my card says), but I might be able to answer a question or two. I do support their efforts, though, so I was happy to pay the fee and help them out however I can.
  19. Hey - I just want to thank everyone who tuned in to the Tommy Flanagan tribute on Tuesday... we had a great turnout to honor a great man. 20. I've seen them a number of times... one really memorable one was at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC like 5 years ago or so. Opening act: the David S. Ware quartet. Everybody was just looking around during Ware's set all lost... But yeah, Sonic Youth is amazing... best memory is when I saw them in 95 (?) and they played that song "Chapel Hill" - that's my favorite, so it was special to finally hear it live...
  21. Just wanted to hip every one here to the fact that all tomorrow afternoon and into the evening, we will be honoring Tommy Flanagan's birthday by playing recordings from every period of his long and storied career. He would have been 74 this Tuesday, and - despite the resurgence of acclaim late in his life - is still one of jazz most underrated pianists... always the kind of player that seemed to be taken for granted. Well, not here... we love him and want to share some of his great music with the world. Tune in here from 10am on to dig on some great music from the 50s on up to today.
