  1. I'll just chalk it up as a lesson learned. Having just recently gotten back into vinyl in a big way, I'm quick to jump on stuff that looks good without investigating first. I'll be more careful next time... -_-
  2. I'll be picking up all of these except the Silver, which I'll probably get at some point, but...I'm in no big hurry. These are all currently saved in my CDUniverse Wish List, along with the Albert Ayler Revenant box...OUCH!...that order's gonna hurt. Just waiting for the end of the month to pull the trigger... Can't wait!
  3. Very good point. Personally, I think it's great that Proper is getting this music out there at such a good price. I mean, really - 4 CDs plus a fantastic booklet in a nice looking, sturdy box for $20?! Simply can't be beat. Compare these to the Mosaic Selects, for instance. With those, there are only 3 CDs...the booklet consists of simply reprinting the original liners (which I like - but, some additional liners with updated information would be nice as well) and the box is laughably flimsy. I would certainly buy more Mosaics if they lowered their prices a bit. I'm not arguing that they lower the price per CD to $5 like Proper...however, somewhere in the $10-$12 range would be much more reasonable. Am I alone in this opinion?
  4. Ordered a bunch of Verve LPR's today that I've been meaning to pick up for a while now. Got these from the Universal Music Store via EBay. That's a great source for these, by the way...the prices are good (got all these for $7-$8 each) and if you buy 4 or more, there's no shipping charge. So, here's what I got... Stuff Smith - 'Cat On a Hot Fiddle' Ray Brown - 'Jazz Cello' Illinois Jacquet - 'Desert Winds' Johnny Griffin - 'JG' Archie Shepp - 'The Cry Of My People' Archie Shepp - 'Attica Blues' Roland Kirk - 'Live In Copenhagen' Art Blakey - 'S Make It' Jack Teagarden - 'Mis'ry And The Blues' Sonny Stitt - 'Personal Appearance' All those for under $80. Not too bad...
  5. Hey wolff, how is that Redding LP? I've been thinking about picking that up along with those Aretha records they've done...
  6. I must register a note of disappointment with Dusty Groove... One of the records I recently bought from them was a 1970's pressing of Hank Mobley's 'Hank Mobley & His All Stars'...not thinking that this was originally released in mono and, with this being a 70's reissue, would probably be in "simulated stereo". So, when I received it, there it is in big, bold letters on the cover of the album: "RE-RECORDED TO SIMULATE STEREO" Ugh. I promptly sent an email to customer service to see if I could return it for credit. The response I received from them is as follows: Dear Michael, Thank you for your message regarding the Hank Mobley LP. Unfortunately, we cannot accept this return. Since we can't be sure of the exact manufacturing conditions of the records we stock, we never list stereo or mono distinctions on our websit. I'm very sorry but we cannot accept the returns based on the stereo/mono distinction. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Sincerely, Junko Dusty Groove America dga@dustygroove.com http://www.dustygroove.com/ I understand their reason for not being able to designate mono/stereo for each and every record they stock. However, I don't understand their reason for refusing to allow me to return this. Shouldn't the fact that I'm not happy with the item be enough to warrant a return?! I didn't even ask for a refund - I simply asked for credit towards a future purchase. Am I wrong to feel let down about this?
  7. You are to be commended for your good deed, wolff. I don't think too many people would've done as you have...
  8. How is that last self-titled album on Blue Note? There are a couple of copies of this on vinyl at a local shop that I've been tempted to pick up.
  9. Here's what I picked up using my current "Buy 1, Get Unlimited At $1.99" offer: Gerry Mulligan/Johnny Hodges - 'Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges' (LPR) Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond - '1975: The Duets' (LPR) The Jazz Crusaders - 'At The Lighthouse '68' Thad Jones/Mel Lewis - 'Central Park North' Thad Jones/Mel Lewis - 'Consummation'
  10. sidewinder, Do you have the Eddie Gale reissues that 4 Men With Beards put out? I was about to pick up the CD versions on Water when I became aware of the vinyl versions that were out there. If you've got 'em, can you weigh in on how they sound? EDIT: (By the way - Midheaven Mailorder have these for a good price - $11.50! That's $3 cheaper than the CD...) street - I've got the 4MWB vinyl of 'Black Rhythm Happening' but have yet to pick up 'Getto Music'. 'BRH' sounds pretty nice in this reissue, can't compare it to the original but I would definitely say go for it. Well presented with good packaging, new liner notes and heavyish vinyl. Thanks for the response, sidewinder. I bought both of these last night - just couldn't pass 'em up at that price. Total for both, including shipping, was ~$28.
  11. Drive Like Jehu - 'S/T' One of my all-time favorites...

  13. I simply refuse to even so much as glance at that link, wolff...
  14. That's one of those albums that just meant to be heard on vinyl. I picked up a Liberty version from wolff not too long ago...absolutley love listening to it. Which era is your copy from?
  15. New titles recently made available: Jack McDuff - 'The Prestige Years' (Prestige) Bud Powell - 'Bebop' (Pablo) Zoot Sims - 'Live At Falcon Lair' (Pablo)
  16. Today it has been: Hank Mobley - 'A Slice Of The Top' Horace Silver - 'Silver's Serenade' (Liberty/UA pressing)
  17. You just had to go and point this out, didn't you? Now I'm $150 poorer than I was 5 minutes ago... But oh, so very happy!
  18. It's been a night of singer/songwriters and classic country for me... Elliott Smith - 'Either/Or' Leonard Cohen - 'Songs From A Room' Charley Pride - 'In Person' Conway Twitty - 'Look Into My Teardrops' Emmylou Harris - 'Blue Kentucky Girl'
  19. Noj, 'Tonic' is a live acoustic set. That aspect alone sets it apart from their other records, with the exception of their first which was also acoustic. 'Tonic' is probably my least listened to record of theirs. Will have to revisit it soon...
  20. LOVE this band. Have the majority of their records. My favorite would have to be 'Combustication'. They've got a new record coming out next month, previews of which can be found on the Blue Note site. They sound pretty damn incredible...
  21. Just ordered the following LP's from Dusty... Grant Green - 'Solid' (70's pressing) Thad Jones - 'Fabulous Thad Jones' (OJC pressing) Freddie Hubbard - 'The Artistry of...' (70's pressing) Hank Mobley - 'Hank Mobley & His All Stars' (70's pressing) Hank Mobley - 'Slice of the Top' (70's pressing) Oliver Nelson - 'Blues and the Abstract Truth' (70's pressing) Horace Silver - 'Silver's Serenade' (70's pressing)
  22. Tonight it was a couple of records that I picked up earlier today... Shelly Manne and Friends 'My Fair Lady' Jackie McLean 'Countour' (70's Prestige two-fer of the albums originally released as '4, 5 and 6' and 'Lights Out')
  23. Spinning Now: Hank Mobley - 'Third Season'
  24. How is this album? I've never heard it before and was thinking about picking up the Classic reissue...
