  1. Anyone know of any good "modern rock" discussion forums out there? The Organissimo forums are the place to go for jazz, obviously...but is there an equivalent for discussions of current goings-on in the rock music world?
  2. Just received this box today from Concord (along with the Evans box). I'm not really sure I understand all the negative attitudes about it (and boxes of this size in general). Sure, it's a massive set...there's a lot, a WHOLE lot, of music to digest. But, as Chuck stated, who says you gotta listen to it all at once?! Does anyone need every note that Coltrane recorded for Prestige? Well, no...ofcourse not. But, it's a good feeling to know that you have every note that Coltrane recorded for Prestige, just in case you wanna, y'know, hear a particular one. Honestly, I never would've bought this set at full price...or even half price, for that matter. But at $60, there's just no way that I could pass it up. Yes, this set will probably sit on the shelf more than it gets played. This is because I, like Parkertown, very much prefer to hear music in its original album sequence while holding the album in my hands, looking at the cover, reading the liners...all that. So I will continue to pick up the OJC LP's as I come across them. However, this box is still something nice to have as one of the many "cornerstones" of my collection. Even if its purpose is relegated to nothing more than a reference source, of sorts...that's okay. It's still good to have. And I do, on occassion, enjoy hearing particular sessions as they were recorded, which would be very difficult to do if all I had were the OJC LP's! It's a big box, yeah...but, "too big"? No. Just gotta enjoy it a little at a time is all.
  3. Received a shipping confirmation today for the first order that I placed...only 3 days after receiving one for the second order. Everything appears to have shipped, though, so hopefully it will all arrive safely upon my doorstep in a few days. Glad some of you guys have begun to receive your shipments - hope you're enjoying all the new music!
  4. Tonight it was: Tina Brooks - 'Back to the Tracks' (Classic Records Stereo) Sam Prekop - 'Who's Your New Professor?' (Thrill Jockey) The Stooges - 's/t' (Sundazed)
  5. Thanks for the responses, guys. Having never heard a mono recording on a system that is optomized for mono playback, I'm really not sure what I'm missing by playing these on a stereo setup. Can anyone elaborate a bit on this? And yes, Allen, that is one fine turntable you got there! I believe I will eventually look into getting a table that allows two separate arms in order to have a mono cart and stereo cart. That seems to be the ultimate solution to this dilemma. And, while that is admittedly a few years away, here is what I've got my heart set on already... Like I said...a few years away. Maybe if I start saving my pennies now, I can afford that setup around, oh...2014? Or maybe I'll win the lottery next week... Then again, I don't play the lottery. I think it's time I start playing the lottery...
  6. Lee Morgan - 'The Gigolo'
  7. I've just got a few of these records (Coltrane - 'Blue Train', Adderley - 'Something Else', Mobley - 's/t', Morgan - 'Indeed'), but love them so much that I plan to get many more. I love everything about them: the wonderful packaging, the high quality vinyl, the mastering, and, especially, the fact that they are in mono. I really can't stand the hard-panned stereo of so many early Blue Note stereo recordings, especially when there is only one horn player. I had originally only intended on getting the "big" recordings ('Blue Train', 'Somethin' Else', 'Soul Station', etc) but now plan to pick up as many of them as I can afford. This makes me wonder... Am I getting as much out of them as I can? I don't have a Mono cartridge, nor do I have a mono switch on my phono preamp. How essential are these in getting the most out of mono recordings? By playing a mono record through a stereo cartridge, what am I missing out on? I suppose that the ideal would be to play mono recordings through a mono cartridge, but would the same result be achieved by using a stereo cart and a phono preamp equipped with a mono switch? The thickness of these records also raises some questions. In my mind, I feel that 200 grams is actually a bit excessive. 180 gram is thick enough, but honestly, I feel that 140-150 gram is plenty thick (with thicker vinyl being used more as a marketing ploy than anything else). Nonetheless, Classic are pressing the Blue Note monos exclusively on 200 gram vinyl and don't appear to have any desire to do otherwise. How necessary is it to adjust VTA/VTF for these records? My table (Music Hall MMF-7 with Pro-Ject 9 arm) does not allow me to adjust these on-the-fly, so adjusting these for only a few records would prove to be a real pain. So, to you more experienced vinyl-philes out there: just how important is VTA/VTF adjustment when playing these thicker slabs of vinyl? Looking foward to discussion on this issue...
  8. I placed two orders on Wednesday. Today I received a shipping confirmation for the second order (consisting of the Coltrane and Evans box sets). Still nothing on the first order (consisting of a bunch of single CD's), though.
  9. Oliver Nelson - 'Screamin' the Blues' (OJC)
  10. Gram Parsons - 'Grievous Angel' Next: Cat Power - 'The Greatest'
  11. The Sea and Cake - 'Nassau' Earlier: Hank Mobley - S/T (Blue Note 1568 - Classic Records Mono)

  13. Where'd you find such a good deal on this record?
  14. The price is right on this set, as well... Available for preorder at CD Universe for just over $20. Stitt Box at CDUniverse
  15. Free shipping on both of my orders. No second email as of yet...
  16. However... If you do a search on their site for these two items, both still show to be available...and at $7.98, no less. They're just not listed in the 'Summer Blowout' section. Hmmm...
  17. Another for the Bags and Wes K2 - an outstanding sounding disc, indeed. Don't miss the Mulligan and Monk, either. One of my favorites!
  18. Order #5555 and #5556 for me. No confirmation as of yet...
  19. For any of you guys that called Concord and spoke to Ms. Melinda... Did anyone ask about other CDs being added to the sale? (I'm almost afraid to ask at this point...)
  20. Gotta save something for the rest of you guys...
  21. Man, I almost wish I hadn't seen this thread today... 55 CD's for me... ...in addition to the Coltrane and Evans sets. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to get so much music I didn't have for such a ridiculous price. All of the discs I bought, aside from the box sets, are Limited Editions or K2's. A few of the K2's are upgrades, but the vast majority of them I've never had in my collection. I almost didn't pick up the box sets, but I just know that if I hadn't, I would end up regretting it down the road. Here's the list of what I picked up: Cannonball Adderley/Milt Jackson - Things Are Getting Better Gene Ammons - Boss Tenor Chet Baker - Chet Chet Baker - Chet Baker Sings-It Could Happen To You Chet Baker - In New York Chet Baker - Plays the Best of Lerner & Loewe Walter Bishop, Jr. Trio - The Walter Bishop, Jr. Trio Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Caravan Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Ugetsu Jaki Byard - Freedom Together Charlie Byrd - Bossa Nova Pelos Passaros Teddy Charles - New Directions Teddy Charles - Teddy Charles & Prestige Jazz Al Cohn - Broadway John Coltrane - Coltrane John Coltrane - Traneing In Ted Curson - Ted Curson Plays Fire Down Below Miles Davis - Bag's Groove Miles Davis - Collectors' Items Miles Davis All Stars - Walkin' Walt Dickerson - A Sense Of Direction Eric Dolphy - Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, Vol. 1 Kenny Dorham - Quiet Kenny Kenny Drew - Kenny Drew Trio Bill Evans - At Shelly's Manne-Hole Bill Evans - Everyone Digs Bill Evans Bill Evans Trio - Explorations Red Garland - Red Garland's Piano Red Garland Quintet - All Mornin' Long Benny Golson - Stockholm Sojourn Elmo Hope - Hope Meets Foster Elmo Hope - Hope-full Milt Jackson Quartet - The Milt Jackson Quartet The Jones Boys - The Jones Boys Barney Kessel Quartet - The Artistry of Barney Kessel Charles McPherson - From This Moment On! 22. Anyone looking forward to this one as much as me? Man...their last two albums have been really great. Listening to the new stuff on their website (here) and after hearing the first 2 tracks...wow. This stuff sounds really, really gooooood... Pretty stripped down compared to the last few, without O'Rourke on board. Can't wait to get this one next month!
  23. This is available from yourmusic.com for $34.93. I just ordered a copy for myself!
  24. Was: Kenny Drew - 'Undercurrent' (Classic Records Reissue) Now: Walt Dickerson - 'To My Queen' (Reissue)
  25. Absolutely. The box set prices are just ridiculous... I mean, less than $40 for the Miles' 'Seven Steps to Heaven' and Sonny Rollins' 'Complete Prestige' set? Wow. Don't forget about the non-jazz stuff, either. The Complete Hank Williams (10 CDs) for under $50. The Complete Doors Studio Recordings (7 CDs) for under $35. The Complete Original Black Sabbath (8 CDs/1 DVD) for under $40. Velvet Underground - 'Peel Slowly and See' (5 CDs) for under $25. Wooooow... I honestly don't know what to buy first.
