What Fantasy and OJC CDs did you buy?
street singer replied to mikeweil's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Have run across several very hard-to-find OJC's tonight...all being offered for sale by Newbury Comics on EBay. Maybe somebody has been looking for these? (I know I was - I've already snatched up copies for myself! ) Sonny Criss 'Rockin In Rhythm' Woody Shaw 'Song of Songs' Nat Adderley 'In The Bag' These are a steal... For the sake of comparison, take a look at the prices they're going for on Amazon: Sonny Criss 'Rockin In Rhythm' (AMAZON) Nat Adderley 'In The Bag' (AMAZON) Woody Shaw 'Song Of Songs' (AMAZON) Better be quick... Now - who wants to hook me up with Shelly Manne's 'Gambit', Duane Tatro's 'Jazz For Moderns' or Mal Waldron's 'Mal/3' at a reasonable price? -

What Fantasy and OJC CDs did you buy?
street singer replied to mikeweil's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I had managed to pick up a few OJC's over the years - mostly key titles - prior to the Concord buyout. My large purchases began with the Concord summer blow-out sale of '06...I believe I ordered about 50 or so single discs plus the Coltrane and Evans box sets. My buying slowed down considerably after that large purchase...until about 6 months ago when I began to see numerous albums on my "must buy before they disappear forever" list begin to...well, disappear - possibly forever. I've been in full-on "panic buy mode" ever since, submitting several large orders to Newbury Comics and various other online retailers, and, most recently, splurging on the Concord and J&R sales. I've managed to acquire a large number of the increasingly hard-to-find discs without paying the ridiculous amounts they are going for...just took a little legwork. These things are still out there - it just takes some effort to find them at a decent price! Here's a list of the titles I currently have on order. Will try to update with items purchased sine the "scare" began, when time allows... OJCs, other Concords, some Verves $4.99 @ J&R
street singer replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I placed my order for 30+ CDs on 1/21...received an email that two of the items were not in stock several days later...and finally received a shipping confirmation yesterday. However, the shipping confirmation was only for 10 of the discs! I went to their website to check the status of the order, and the remainder of the items are listed as "processing." Huh?! I'll give it a few days to see what happens before I try to contact them... EDITED FOR CORRECTION: I forgot that I placed two separate orders, one day apart... The first order shipped, minus the two items not in stock. The second order is "processing". -
Grab those OJC's before they're gone!
-
Strange... It worked for me yesterday when I placed an order.

Actually, the 'Buy 10, Get 1 Free' sale is still in effect. I didn't see it advertised on their website, but if you put 10 albums in your cart, you'll see that one is listed as being free. (Might I add that several of these Nat titles are no longer available through the Concord site - which means they're about to be gone, gone, gone... They're still available through various resellers at reasonable prices - with the exception of 'In The Bag' - good luck with that one!)

Well put. I'm in complete agreement with you. My impressions of Music Matters, and Ron Raumbach, is that they are sincere in what they are doing and are doing it for the right reasons. As for Hoffman, well... He was hired to make sure they sound great. End of story. I've no doubt that he will do that job to the best of his abilities...and his abilities are often remarkable, IMO. But, yes - the Hoffman 'cult' does to tend to leave a bad taste in one's mouth... When I read those boards, I'm often left with the impression that many people there will buy a record or CD simply because it was mastered by this guy, regardless of the musical content - a phenomenon that I find very odd. The most recent example, and most relevant to this discussion, are folks that are buying these Blue Note reissues who have never so much as listened to jazz before... Wow. That I just don't get... Regarding 'Way Out West' and all of those early Contemporary records - yeah, Roy DuNann definitely worked some magic in those days... Those recordings are phenomenal. The only comparison I can make to the 45RPM pressing of 'Way Out West' is with the original OJC CD reissue - and that is truly no comparison. I'm sure that an original mono pressing, in pristine condition, sounds unbelievable.

Okay. Soooo... This view of 'subjecting the master tapes to unnecessary wear and tear' applies to any reissue campaign then, correct? Or is it the limited nature of these pressings (2,500 copies) that makes this particular wear and tear unacceptable - as opposed to, say, the RVG CD reissues which, being printed in larger numers, makes that particular wear and tear acceptable? So... What about our beloved Mosaic reissues? Those are limited. How are those different than these vinyl reissues? I see where you're coming from...I think. However, what good is the master tape if it's just sitting somewhere rotting away, never to be seen (or heard) again? May as well just copy it to a digital format and throw it out with the trash. How depressing is that? The master tapes are still in decent shape, as far as I know. The fact that a company is willing to put the time and effort into preserving the sound of those tapes onto vinyl - a superior format to CD, in my opinion - before the vinyl format dies away completely should be commended. Music Matters, Ltd. is doing these things right, as far as I'm concerned. These records aren't being sourced from CD's and pressed onto cheap, noisy vinyl, slapped into a flimsy sleeve and released into the market to make a quick buck (looking at you, Scorpio). The love and respect for the music is obvious when you hear how they sound and see how they are being presented. Yes, they're expensive...and yes, they're limited. I wish that weren't the case. I don't see how they can do this any other way, though...unfortunately.

I dunno, guys... I understand the opinions being expressed here. Really, I do... And I expected most here to have a negative opinion of these reissues. These forums are much more about 'the music' than they are about sound quality, format, presentation, mastering, etc, etc. As it should be. That's the very reason why I prefer this board to, say, something like the Hoffman forums. However... Have any of you who are slamming these reissues actually heard them? Or heard any of the 45RPM Fantasy reissues put out by Analogue Productions over the past several years? I can't help but think that if you had, you may feel differently. They truly are something special. (The 45RPM edition of Sonny Rollins' 'Way Out West' is absolutely the most 'real' sounding record I have ever heard...without question). Back to these Blue Notes. I love this music. I have heard the majority of the albums to be released in this series by way of the CD reissues. I'm not buying these in the hopes that I may like them, or simply because they were mastered by Steve Hoffman, or even as a monetary investment. I'm buying them because I know and love the music, and I know that these reissues will be superior to any previous vinyl reissues and vastly superior to their CD counterparts... I also know that if I don't get 'em now, they'll be gone in no time and I'll never forgive myself for missing out on this opportunity. Seriously - I know all of you are fans of the music before any of the other stuff. And, because of that, I urge you to give these things a chance. Not suggesting to subscribe to the series - I feel a bit crazy for doing that myself... But, pick one. If you're a Mobley fan, pick up a copy of 'Soul Station' when it comes out and compare it to any other version of it that you have. Or pick up 'Out To Lunch', or 'Basra', or 'Leapin' and Lopin'...any of them... just to see what the fuss is about. I swear, there's living, breathing music in those grooves...

Just a heads up... Ordered a couple of the out-of-print (and increasingly hard to find) Lockjaw discs from True Blue today: 'Smokin' and 'Jaws In Orbit'. Both of these go for ridiculous prices on the second hand market. Grab 'em quick if you want 'em and don't have 'em!
-
I've got the first two releases...and they sound fantastic. Definitely better than their CD counterparts. Have not heard the original vinyl releases (or earlier reissues) of these albums, so I can't make that comparison. Also, I will state that these are without question the best looking vinyl reissues I've ever seen. The presentation is phenomenal... There's been a lot of love put into these things, that's for sure. I know they're expensive...I know. But, if you can swing it, don't let this series pass you by. At the bare minimum, I think everyone here who has a love for Blue Note and even a passing interest in vinyl should pick up 2 or 3 of their absolute favorite albums when they are reissued. These things are really that good...

Happy New Year everybody! All the best in 2008...

So... Tell us what ya got, Ghost! I've been surprised at some of the titles that are still available. Makes me wonder... Have they been available all along, or did they recently find a 'secret stash' in the back corner of the warehouse? Hmmm... Either way, now's the time to get 'em...

It's a Wonderful Organissimo Board
street singer replied to ghost of miles's topic in Forums Discussion
Wow... Very sad news. I haven't posted much over the years...much more of a lurker...but I can't even begin to describe how much I've benefited from the presence of this board and all the people that post here. I had only been listening to jazz for about a year when I discovered this board...back in '03 or '04...so this board has been an integral part of my understanding of and appreciation for this wonderful music. I really hate to see this place go... As others have said, I would gladly contribute financially, either monthly/yearly, if that's what it takes to keep this place alive. If there is more to Jim's decision than money (as there seems to be), well...I understand. This place will be sorely missed... -
Anyone else wanna recommend some OOP gems that shouldn't be missed?

Here's what I ordered... Max Roach Quartet Featuring Hank Mobley Oliver Nelson With Lem Winchester - 'Nocturne' Shelly Manne & His Men, Vol. 2 Thad Jones - 'Mad Thad' Charles McPherson - 'Con Alma!' Stan Getz With Cal Tjader (SACD) The Curtis Counce Group - 'Carl's Blues' The Curtis Counce Group - 'Landslide' Johnny Griffin Quartet - 'Way Out!' Lennie Niehaus Vol.1: The Quintets Thanks for the heads-up on this sale, guys! A couple of recommendations... For anyone who doesn't have 'em (and likes vibes), you've gotta get those Walt Dickerson and Lem Winchester CD's before they're gone. They're already selling for outrageous amounts from Amazon resellers... Get 'em while you still can!
