  1. Anyone heard this yet? I've been listening to it the past couple of weeks and for the most part have really been enjoying it. It has been incredibly hyped (and with good reason...the first Mission of Burma album in 20+ years!), and I had my doubts as to whether it would live up to all of it, but...I think I can honestly say that it almost does. That opening track ("The Setup") is such a killer... If you don't have this yet and are planning to get it, be sure to pick up a vinyl copy. All-analog 180 gram, and with an extra track to boot.
  2. Thanks for sharing that great bit of news, ghost!
  3. I might have to pick up a few of these myself. I've seen Fugazi twice...once in '94 and once in...'96, maybe? It'd be great to have copies of those shows...especially the one from '94, since that was my first show EVER! Memories, memories...
  4. Here's what Sara Lund had to say about the 'Live In London' record: "BBC owns the rights so no one else can put them out. Unless of course, some naughty person from Texas puts it out as a bootleg and calls it UNWOUND LIVE IN LONDON. But I can't believe that would ever happen..." I have still yet to hear the Replikants myself. Nor have I gotten around to getting the singles collection. I have the majority of that material on vinyl - though I'd like to eventually get the CD to have it all in one place. Regarding the demo - I actually had a copy of that at one time. Downloaded it during the early days of Napster, but have since lost it...and been unable to find a source for a replacement. That "long rumoured live album" would be most welcome! Have you seen this website? While not very current, it's still got loads of good information... http://unwound.livid.com/
  5. Anyone using ME should spend some time over at this website... http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme I've had this OS on a machine at work for the last couple of years. This website helped TREMENDOUSLY.
  6. The Atlantic box and the Village Vanguard box.
  7. For the last 4 years, I have been doing purchasing for a hydraulic/industrial hose and fitting shop. Ho-hum... On Monday, I will begin my new career with the Houston Fire Dept. I'll be attending EMT courses for the first 3 months and then working on an ambulance for the next 4-5 months as a "civilian trainee". After that, I'll be going to fire school for another 4 months. Wish me luck, everyone!
  8. That 'Live In London' record does indeed consist of their Peel Sessions set, and it is a KILLER. Get it while you still can. I bought it a couple of years ago when it was released (less than legitimately, I'm sure) by a label here in Texas. It's since been made available again as an import, I believe. If you like "Side Effects of Being Tired", the version of that song on this record will literally knock ya down - it's incredible. THOSE DRUMS!!!
  9. Well, I ordered 5 early vinyl OJC's direct from Fantasy. They arrived here today (very quick shipping), but...3 out of the 5 that I ordered are apparently no longer available: Pepper Adams '10 to 4 at the 5 Spot', Eric Dolphy 'Out There' and Lee Konitz 'Duets'. The letter I received with the order states that these may possibly be temporarily out of stock or no longer available. Ummm, okay... Since the majority of these have been sitting on their shelves for over 15 years now, I'm going to assume that if they're not presently available, they ain't gonna be. Anyone else experience this? Is this a common occurrence when ordering these?
  10. Not meaning to steer this completely off topic, but...it's not everyday that I find another Unwound fan. I took a while for me to get into 'Leaves...', too. Some of the songs grabbed me immediately ("December", "Demons Sing Love Songs", "October All Over") while others took longer...and some still haven't. Overall, though, it's a very impressive piece of work. The album that I still haven't managed to wrap my ears around, so to speak, is 'Challenge For a Civilized Society'. There's a couple of songs I really like ("Sonata For Loudspeakers", the instrumental track, comes to mind) but overall...well, it's not a bad record - as far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as a bad Unwound record...but, it's the one that I've played the least. By a wiiiiiiiiide margin. The one that I've played the most? A toss up between 'New Plastic Ideas' and 'The Future of What'. What an incredible band they were...
  11. Got my copy of 'All Music' in the mail today; listening as I type. Great stuff... And yes, some mighty fine liner notes!
  12. I've only been able to compare the K2 version and previous version of "Plays Duke Ellington" while at work and fairly superficially. The K2 had a bit more bass and was a tad clearer, but the difference wasn't revelatory -- I always thought the older version was one of Monk's better sounding Riversides, anyway (I'd love to hear a K2 version of "5 by Monk by 5"). If I had a long list of CDs on my wishlist and already owned the OJC of "Plays...", I might hold off on getting it for awhile. The difference between the new vs. previous versions of Evans' "New Jazz Conceptions" was much, much more impressive. Thanks for the info!
  13. I've been contemplating getting that Monk as a vinyl OJC, seeing as how there are no bonus tracks on the CD. Would be interested in hearing how the K2 compares...
  14. I'm just going to pretend I didn't see this post... ...seeing as how they're in Austin tonight, that probably means that they'll be here in Houston tomorrow...and I can't make it due to prior obligations. Saw them in '96 w/ Unwound (one of my favorite bands EVER, if I might add). Incredible show... I remember them opening with "Teenage Riot" and ending with an amazing 20+ minute version of "The Diamond Sea". I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Please let us know how it went! I'll continue to ignore this post until after their appearance in Houston tomorrow...
  15. So... I'm gathering from this thread that there is not a definitive list of OJC vinyl that was mastered from a digital source. However, from your collective personal experience, is there a general concensus of opinion regarding certain OJC vinyl to avoid (for whatever reason)?
  16. *Lee Konitz (as, ts), Jimmy Rowles (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass), Shelly Manne (drums). Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, December 20, 1956 *Same as above, except December 22, 1956. *Lee Konitz (as), Don Ferrara (tp), Billy Bauer (guitar), Peter Ind (bass), Dick Scott (drums). 17. Wait 'til you get to Disc 5... That's my favorite.
  18. Found this in the little store here in Green Bay (!) SMOKES! diggin' it - go buy it Anyone get the Mel Brown or any other Verve reissues on the 9th? I ordered the Lateef along w/ the Coleman. Still waiting for both to arrive from CD Universe (maybe today?), looking forward to them very much.
  19. "RCM"? Please explain. Obviously, I'm fairly new to the world of vinyl...
  20. Just stumbled upon this thread... Did anyone ever get any more information regarding these recent Blue Note reissues? (ie: where they come from (source), who's putting them out, why there hasn't been much hype about them, etc)
  21. I've picked up quite a few of these recently and am actually very happy with them. I mean, it's music that I would've otherwise paid twice as much (or more) to acquire....what's there to complain about?! Yeah, the covers are blue...but you can print your own full-color covers on any decent printer (which is what I did). A lot of these have TOCJ markings on the inserts. I don't know if it's been definitively confirmed that they are indeed TOCJ remasters, but according to many who are more familiar with that series than I am, they certainly sound like TOCJ's. The ones w/o TOCJ markings appear to be the 80's Ron McMasters versions. Bottom line: it's music at a good price that you would otherwise have to pay quite a bit more for. I say give 'em a shot...
  22. Thanks for the comments, everyone. So, the general opinon of those who have responded seems to be that these are "alright", at best. Nothing spectacular. However, the same could be said about the majority of OJC CD's. So... Do you see any reason to buy these over the CD's? Granted, they are a few bucks cheaper...and you get the full size cover artwork (ofcourse, with a lot of these covers, that's not necessarily a good thing). However, if you're going to buy a record that's mastered from a digital source...well, that kind of defeats the purpose of acquiring the music on vinyl, don't you think? Then again... I sure do like watching those shiny black discs spin around and around. Anyone else here have an opinon of these? Still would like to hear how these compare to the K2 remasters.
  23. I'm looking for some opinions on the OJC vinyl reissues. The recent thread on Fantasy being up for sale really got my attention, and as I was perusing through their catalog I noticed the large amount of vinyl still available from them. I just ordered a few of these yesterday and am ready to pick up a great many more...but, I seem to recall some negative opinions some people had about these reissues. Seems that there was some controversy regarding the possibility of digital source material for some of these - any truth to that? If so, have the ones that were mastered from digital sources been identified? Most importantly, though: In general, how do these things sound? Are they better sounding than their standard OJC CD counterparts? How do they compare to the newer K2 remastered CDs? Like I said, I'm ready to put down some change for quite a few of these, and since I value the opinions of all of you here so much, I figured I'd check here first before venturing out into "the wild" (ie: Audio Asylum, et al). Many thanks!
  24. Mike, Agreed. I started this thread 'cause I thought it was a cool cover and that others might be interested in knowing it was out there. No "how dare they!" sentiments from me. They're also a really great band, by the way.
  25. This company sells what appear to be high quality vinyl reissues of classic albums. I've been eyeing the 3 Nick Drake albums lately and am veeeerrrrry, very tempted. Has anyone heard the reissues put out by this company? Are they worth picking up? If so, is there a good source for these here in the US? Thanks!
