I'll take Fletcher's 1936 band over any other band of the swing era. It's a good place to start an investigation of Henderson's recordings. Stealin' Apples, Christopher Columbus, and Blue Lou come immediately to mind as both Henderson classics and definitive versions of three jazz standards. You can work forward and backward from this point and find interesting recordings, although some of the 1920s stuff is fairly commercial and not everything is well-recorded. (Even 2 or 3 years after electrical recording had been introduced, Fletcher was still waxing an occasional acoustic disc.)

All four circles are the same size. -
My preference is for a chile made with fresh chopped vegetables--onion, garlic, warm peppers, tomatoes--stir-fried for ten minutes; organic ground beef, pinto beans prepared from scratch, and lots of fresh chopped celantro added 30 seconds before you're ready to serve. And hot sauce to taste. Great as a leftover too, but by the second day the celantro taste will have evaporated.

Hawk, Roy, Ethel Waters On Route 66
Brownian Motion replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Discography
I'm pretty sure it was Hawk on the soundtrack--he played clarinet when he was with Fletcher Henderson--he even waxed a solo. -
Ethel Waters, Hawk, Roy, and Jo Jones were guest stars on an episode of the long-gone television series "Route 66". Does anyone know whether the soundtrack to that show ever made it onto LP or CD?

I found this on the Harlem.org message board, where it is sure to slip through the cracks. Our records show that we owe royalties to the estate of Bill Coleman. If you have info on how we may contact the administrator of his estate or heirs please contact: Kevin Foreman Royalty Accountant EMI Music North America 304 Park Avenue South New York, NY 10010 212-253-3131 kevin.foreman@emicap.com Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Half.com NOT closing
Brownian Motion replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It's my guess that this was a silent, unorganized revolt by Half.com sellers. Ebay not only wanted to fold Half.com into ebay, but also wanted to start charging a monthly listing fee to be one of their corny little "stores". People who list a couple dozen books or CDs or DVDs on half.com--probably a majority of the sellers there--said "hell with this". -
Dear Seller, In our last announcement earlier this summer, we said that Half.com would be closing on October 14, 2004. We have decided not to go forward with this plan and will keep Half.com open indefinitely. Over the last year and a half, our efforts to prepare for a consolidated marketplace for Books, Movies, Music and Video Games on eBay have helped many Half.com sellers transition to eBay, especially during this past back-to-school season. Many of you have reported being successful on eBay while growing your overall sales by selling on both platforms. This has contributed to the biggest back-to-school season ever experienced on eBay. However, with all the growth in the Books, Movies, Music and Video Games categories on eBay, we have not seen a corresponding drop in business on Half.com. In fact, loyalty to Half.com has remained strong as we witnessed yet another outstanding back-to-school season on Half.com. The buying and selling activities of the eBay and Half.com communities have proven that the Books, Movies, Music and Video Games marketplace can be more vibrant with both Half.com and eBay. We have heard from many of you that you want the Half.com site to remain open and to have the option to sell on both platforms. Your input, as well as the data and experience we have gained during the transition efforts, are the basis for our decision to keep Half.com open. There will be no substantive changes to Half.com in the foreseeable future. We encourage you to sell on both Half.com and eBay to maximize your sales, as many of you have already done throughout the transition period. Going forward, we will invest in both platforms and allow sellers and buyers the flexibility to benefit from the unique opportunities they each allow. If you have further questions, please read our Frequently Asked Questions page or attend one of the following live interactive Q&A sessions with eBay and Half.com executives: ? Thursday, September 30 @ 10:00am PT -- REGISTER ? Tuesday, October 5 @ 4:00pm PT -- REGISTER

The program represents a robot named SHRDLU that evinces its understanding partly by verbal responses to its interlocutor, but mainly by carrying out actions at the human's command. http://www.ee.cooper.edu/courses/course_pa...s/EE459/shrdlu/ Shrdlu: Stop your infernal proselityzing!

It's Harpo for me--the only clown that makes me laugh. Harpo kicking his feet in the lemonade. Harpo in the Punch & Judy show. Harpo stamping the custom inspector's head and then throwing his papers up in the air.

Wow! It'll take me to the quadra-centennial to slog through all those essays. Maybe I'll skip them until after the election.

I picked up this Laserlight CD on Ebay a couple weeks back. It's a 1979 live club date in France. If you love 1930s jazz or great swing trumpet players like Roy or Buck or Red then you should check this out. You will not be disappointed.

I heartily recommend Ralph Berton's book REMEMBERING BIX. A Memoir of The Jazz Age to Bixophiles. How much of it is true I can't say, but it a lovely book about a lost time. You can find copies here: http://www.bookfinder.com/

Breyer's Ice Cream
Brownian Motion replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My other problem with Breyer's is that it's too sweet. I notice this especially with the chocolate, my favorite flavor. I do like their strawberry, however. This week my wife bought me a pint of Julie's Organic Chocolate ice cream. It was outstanding! -

Errors and Contradictions in the Bible
Brownian Motion replied to Shrdlu's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Shrdlu wrote: Re the multiple homicides, do you actually know anyone who's saved and has committed multiple homicides? Former Governor Bush of Texas, who claims to be saved, could have intervened in the state killing of numerous people during his six years in office. That he chose not to, at the least, makes him complicit in state-sanctioned homicide. -
Two fo my favorite post-Django Grappelli efforts are his 1973 reunion with trumpeter Bill Coleman, which is on CD but HTF, and his live album with mandolinist David Grisman.

I actually started out at the Harlem Board, and stumbled on a post there which directed me to the BNBB. I arrived about two weeks before it imploded, but in those two weeks I really liked what I saw. I remember the day when all the BN refugees trooped over to the Harlem Board, where it quickly became apparent that the cat who ran that board was way too controlling to be able to tolerate such an obstreporous mob. Through "word of mouth" I heard about Organissimo. Jazz Corner I found a bit clubby; I like AAJ okay, and post there occasionally, but this is the place I call home.

Teacher Mary Letourneau freed
Brownian Motion replied to brownie's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You are nuts...She has a mental illness...who gives a flying fuck what her father did, unless he was charged with molesting children? People like yourself believe anything and everything is political. I guess I she try to find out if Scott Peterson's parents voted for Democrats, that would explain everything! Scott Peterson is a piss-poor example, and you know it. How about if it was Gary Condit's daughter? -
Teacher Mary Letourneau freed
Brownian Motion replied to brownie's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Although the media loves this story, they really play down the fact that Letourneau is the daughter of a former ultra-rightwing congressman. Must be that since ultras are family value folks, Mary Kay Letourneau is a forgivable aberration. I doubt a Democrat's daughter would be cut the same slack.
