The Beatles could bail out Michael Jackson
Brownian Motion replied to brownie's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
If I had over 400 million in assets and 275 million in debts I would count myself so wealthy that I would set up a small foundation with some of the excess. I guess these things are relative. -
I use the equivalent--auction stealer. It gives 3 free snipes each week, which is about my requirement. They also offer pay plans. It has definitely saved me money. I paypal them a little money now and then to show my appreciation for their free service.

The whopping 350.00 "re-activation fee" is a neat wrinkle--haven't seen it before!

Tal Farlow Mosaic
Brownian Motion replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I received my Tal Farlow set yesterday from Caiman. Mine came with the correct lettering on the spine but also with the defective disc 6. But I can live with the noise; it disappears into the song pretty quickly. I haven't bought a new Mosaic set in a decade, and I have been assuming all along that the set design would no longer reflect the long-playing record era. Of course I was wrong. I suppose to stick with the original design concept gives a nice uniformity to things, but the fact is that as presently designed these sets waste space, and, at least in my home, space is at a premium. -
Jazztone occasionally leased material to issue. Is it possible that "Doubles in Jazz" is part of this date? http://half.ebay.com/cat/buy/prod.cgi?cpid...=1876&meta_id=2

So drinking on a drive is to make the trip more entertaining? These Montana folks should be smoking pot instead. -
Oldest Average Age on a Jazz Record
Brownian Motion replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
How can you not be sure that the New Orleans band count as jazz? What they play was jazz long before most of what you listen to today was even thought of. If anything, the question might be, what subsequent music was/is jazz. I learned about jazz listening to New Orleans Jazz--King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, Hot Fives, Johnny Dodds, Kid Ory--that sort of thing. I also listened to what was being recorded at the time--some of the "Living Legends" stuff on Riverside, Paul Barbarin on Jazztone. What I didn't listen to was the more commercial "dixieland" type of music that was peddled by groups like the Firehouse Five and The Dukes of Dixieland. I understood that this was a commercial variant of true jazz, and that the only people who liked it were clueless middle-aged white guys. I went to Preservation Hall in 1977 and it was my worst encounter with live music. And talk about commercial: The experience was based on the notion that tourists should be hustled as quickly and efficiently as possible, and then dismissed to make room for the next pack of drunken sheep. I suppose Percy Humphrey was playing well for an old man back then, but when I talked to Danny Barker on the phone the next day he told me, in essence, to stay away from Preservation Hall if I wanted to hear real jazz. I think that was good advice. -
Oldest Average Age on a Jazz Record
Brownian Motion replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I used to have a Punch Miller record on which one of the cats--Chinee Foster if I remember correctly--was over 90. Don't know what the average was, though. Some of those Preservation Hall dates featured advanced players, chronologically--especially if you discounted the young white guy-enthusiast who played tuba. Of course I'm not sure whether they really count as jazz. -
I picked up a copy of Brazilville--the Charlie Byrd Trio with Bud Shank, and it's a pure delight, sort of a 12 cylinder LA 4. I'm looking for recommendations for other Shank albums on Concord--specifically Crystal Comments; Yesterday, Today, and Forever; Sunshine Express--are these worth getting?

Concord Jazz As Part of the OJC Reissue Series
Brownian Motion replied to bebopbob's topic in Re-issues
There are several ways that Concord could go: limited edition box sets, perhaps even signed by some of the surviving principals (Bud Shank, Scott Hamilton, Hank Jones); or "twofers"; or complete sessions with alternates. Instead we get bullshit. Don't these marketing whizzes know who buys this stuff? -
Tal Farlow Mosaic
Brownian Motion replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sure to be rarity someday--like an upside down airmail stamp! -
I assume the artist's estate has to sign-off on something that departs so dramatically from the artist's original intent. Or maybe not--who knows what the original contract specified. Still, this makes me feel uneasy. It's a little like painting a mustache and goatee on the Mona Lisa, but dada it ain't.

I live in rural central Pennsylvania, and I don't watch television, and I rarely listen to much on the radio besides NPR news programs. Can someone explain to me wtf this is? http://tinyurl.com/4pm2q

Can someone explain to me why the Tal Farlow Mosaic (albeit not identified as such)is selling on Amazon US new for 53.00 (by Cascaiman) and on the Mosaic website for 119.00? Is this the European Mosaic? And if it is, is there any way adding a limitation number would more than double its value in the eyes of prospective buyers? Confused in PA

Thanks for posting this, Chandra. But I must say that it has really got me wondering what a "small, coronet-like voice" sounds like. -

Not to mention Charlie Christian. A sizable slice of his recorded legacy is alternate takes. -

I just got Adam Makowicz at Maybeck Recital Hall playing an all Cole Porter program (with the exception of a Makowicz-composed Art Tatum tribute). Nice stuff! -
I'm listening to "Wibur deParis Plays Cole Porter" from about 1958. Wilbur's band seemed to enjoy playing these tunes and I enjoy hearing them, both of us liberated for 40 minutes from the usual fare of dixieland warhorses. In particular Doc Cheatham and Sonny White seem to thrive on this more challenging material. Next up on the changer is Wibur Harden's "The King and I", and while none of these songs entered the jazz standard repetoire they give Wilbur a nice showcase for his melodic improvisations and glorious tone. Anyone got favorites?
