Musicians - Post Your Music Here!
bluesForBartok replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Musician's Forum
I've been working on a Konitz solo on the "Indiana" changes - https://photos.app.goo.gl/SM3z6pcS2pFp5Usx7 - my video has both solos before/after piano. A couple of flubs here and there but mostly accurate. Would love comments, critiques etc. Thank you to those who take the time to watch :-) BfB -
>>and Hank wasn't really all that great here<< I would love if someone could explain why this seems to be the overall sentiment w/ regard to this session. As a player and a very discerning listener, I'm not so sure I would agree. FWIW I've heard all of the false starts & alternate takes of this session and from what I hear, these guys were having a lot of fun in the studio and I think it shows in the performances they culled for this release.

How is this not better known or widely discussed? Holy smokes this is a fantastic session

Anyone on here check this album yet? I've been listening via the Tidal service - btw much better quality then Spotify - and I gotta say, this record is a nice surprise. I suppose it should come as no surprise that the interplay btw. these three is solid but they're particularly telepathic on these recordings. A learning moment for me was not being aware that these Swallow tunes seem to lean into standard chord progressions (is "Awful Coffee" on the changes of "All The Things You Are?") quite a bit. Scofield seems pretty adventurous on these tunes and to my ears, his lines are some of the most interesting I've heard in a long while. I suppose I started to feel a 'sameness' in some of his releases so dipped out for a few years. On this one, there are nice displays of long Konitz-esque lines with start/end points bleeding over bar lines and punctuating in unexpected places. Curious to know your thoughts.

I've been listening to the the Parker recording from March '46 w/ Albany and I have to say his (Albany's) playing sounds very amateurish. He sounds like a student trying to figure out how to play bop lines. Oddly the Koch book (Yardbird Suite) heaps heavy praise on Albany's playing on this session but I'm just not hearing it. What am I missing?

Can anyone tell me the story behind why the tracks recorded w/ Mobley, Silver et. al. on 6.6.55 for Blue Note ("'Daylie' Double", "You're Mine, You", "Pennies From Heaven", "Groovin'", "Viscosity", "Portrait of Jennie") also appear as bonus tracks on the expanded edition of Johnson's Blue Trombone? Were they actually recorded for Columbia & BN purchased them or vice versa? Thanks

If anyone is interested, I have a sealed copy of the Robert Johnson Centennial set that came out a few years ago and willing to sell. I've seen a few on Amazon and ebay for stupid prices and I have no intent of gauging anyone on this board. I'm certainly willing to consider reasonable offers so PM me if this your cup of tea.

I've also had a Rhythm Changes PL set up for a while now if anyone is interested in following.
