This is one of those jazz albums, jazz fans in Europe should have heard. In Europe this gifted, Israelian born US piano player and composer, Alon Nechushtan is rather unknown. With Words Beyond, a journey beyond words, Alon and his trio, featuring Francois Moutin on double bass and Dan Weiss on drums, love to stretch its wings to Europe and this album shows that this trio has a lot to offer. Play this album and be surprised. Alon Nechushtan sets off to a journey beyond words Durium

Dasha, still a student in Jazz Vocal at The Royal Conservatory of The Hague, surprised with her debut album, entitled Quality Time. Inspired by the voice of Ella Fitzgerald, she knew she would become a jazz vocalist and this first album shows that she has the skills to do so. She seems to be a natural talent to me who has the chance to become one of the leading voices in jazz. Dasha debuts with a promising album: Quality Time Durium

I believe that the snapshot used on the cover of the album For Now by the De Nazaten & James Carter expresses the mix of music styles in a great way: rhythmical Surinamese kaseko and the swinging baritone saxophone by jazz giant James Carter. A great combination: James Carter and De Nazaten. This is their second album together But few people will dislike these merry sounds which encourage to dance. De Nazaten and James Carter: A great mix of two music cultures. De Nazaten en James Carter: For Now Durium

During the 1950s, the post war period in which Europe had to redevelop itself, famous American jazzmusicians discovered Europe and visited the great Temples of Jazz, like the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam or the Kurhaus in Scheveningen in The Netherlands. In 1958 Sarah Vaughan was, like Benny Goodman, invited to play at the American pavilion, now het Amerikaans Theater, at the Brussel's World Fair which included an extensive European tour. In June 1958 she gave a concert at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and was present at an AVRO Tv-programme, recorded in the morning of the 7th of June 1958, at the Bussum's Tv-studios. It was reviewed as an "avond van louter ontspanning" ( = an evening with pure amusement) as part of a "met zorg voorbereid en evenwichtig samengesteld amusementsprogramma". ( = well prepared and composed entertainment programme. The night concert has been released after more then 50 years as one of the treasures in the series Jazz at the Concertgebouw - a series of jazz albums released by the Dutch Jazz Archive. Amina Figarova is one of those jazz musicians, who are rather unknown in the region where they live, but famous elsewhere in the world. In the Porgy en Bess jazz club in Terneuzen in the south west part of The Netherlands, she showed that this is undeserved - she played her compositions, inspired by stories of her tours all over the world, from South Africa up to Canada. This year they move to the States to play in clubs and festivals all around the country, so ..... if you're there - don't miss it. Amina Figarova Sextet Durium

On the 6th of September 1973 history was written in the Twee Spieghels in Leiden (The Netherlands), although no-one realized that. An old, weary and a bit merry tenor saxophone player Ben Webster, tried to survive in rather noisy circumstances - an evening to forget .... if it hadn't been so special - it happened to be Ben's last public performance. Almost forty years later, on the same day, and the same spot, almost the same rhythm section joined in for a jam to commemorate this historical concert. Sarah Vaughan ( 1924-1990) is one of those legendary jazz vocalist from the second part of the Twentieth Century you can't have missed. She had a voice like a vocalist in the grand opera. During the 1950s and 1960s, when she developed into a very popular vocalist, she conquered the world and in 1954 she visited The Netherlands for the very first time. Keep Swinging loves to spot light her early career as an introduction for her European concerts in 1958 and the recently released 1958 Concertgebouw concert in Amsterdam. Ben Webster lived the last years of his life in Amsterdam, pampered by his landlady Mrs. Hartlooper, who didn't speak his language and communicated in broken English: Is lekker the keek …. En de kaffee .. Lekker water …. (= You like the cake? And the coffee? Nice fresh water?). She's like a mother to me, Ben says in the Johan Van Der Keuken film "Big Ben". Living in an Amsterdam apartment, playing his music ( Fats Waller's stride on a noisy LP), making home movies, visiting the Amsterdam Zoo, playing his billiards and a gig now and then, this documentary fascinates. Rony Verbiest and his new trio are hard to label. He plays the paso doble, the tango ( The Antwerp tango - sorry 'bout that), the bolero or a waltz dedicated to Toots Thielemans with ease. Is it Jazz or world music .......? No, it's Rony, the man who is named in one and the same breath with Richard Galliano - Rony Verbiest is music out-and-out, an artist pur sang. The New Trio played the Suite Colometa at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen (The Netherlands) with Rony on bandoneon - a tribute to the book La Plaça del Diamant ( translated as: The Times of the Doves) and the Spanish music. This weekend Roy Eldridge, Mr. Little Jazz, was born 100 years ago. This great trumpet player, now almost forgotten, could be labelled as the link between the older generation of trumpet players and the beboppers like Dizzy Gillespie, Howard McGhee and Clifford Brown. Jack or better Jacques Diéval, the man with the pipe, was the host and producer of Jazz aux Champs-Élysées, a weekly program on Paris-Inter with light music and jazz during the 1950s and 1960s with numerous US guests musicians who visited Europe. The musicians where accompanied by his JACE All-Stars, which featured the best French jazzmen of that moment. The INA released a great album with a selections of those concerts, featuring great names like Lester Young, Stephane Grappelli, Chet Baker and Bobby Jaspar. Jazz aux Champs-Élysées] Durium

The young Dutch group Triplicate released last month its debut album in Pavlov Bar and Restaurant in The Hague, entitled Three and one. The trio, featuring trumpet player Ellister Van Der Molen, pianist Bob Wijnen and double bass player Johnny Dale was enlarged with drummer and nester of the Dutch jazzscene Eric Ineke. Its debut Three and one surprised - a great album made by young people, not swayed by the issues of the day, but striving to keep the jazz tradition and thre spirit of jazz alive, healthy and into the future!(quote (not to the letter): Claudio Roditi.) The South-African vocalist Tutu Puoane has been inspired by great jazz vocalists like Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Joni Mitchell. She showed at a concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, that she could entertain the audience with her voice and charisma together with her leliewit ondersteuningsgroep ( "white accompanists") as they say in Afrikaans. Rein De Graaff is well known in The Netherlands for decades thanks to his yearly tours in which he brings almost forgotten bebop musicians out into the open. During the last decades he invited James Spaulding, Gary Smulyan, Pete Christlieb, Johnny Griffin', Al Cohn, Herb Geller, Frank Morgan, Conte Candoli and Gary Foster to list some. Timeless released, as part of a series, its third compilation album dedicated to Rein's music, entitled Ornithology. Rein De Graaff compilation album: Ornithology Durium

Brooks Tegler is inspired by the sound of the great big band drummers, like Gene Krupa. He recently released two albums, one with compositions of the 1930s and 1940s swing big bands and a second one dedicated to the Bands-in-a-bands, the smaller groups, that allowed the members of the band to present themselves. A few years ago the Brazilian singer / songwriter Ceumar moved from Sao Paulo to Amsterdam where she performed with the Dutch jazz trio of Mike Del Ferro - Frans Van Der Hoeven and Olaf Keus. One of these concerts was recorded at the Tropentheater in Amsterdam and is now available as her fifth album, her debut in Holland. Keep Swinging listened to this album and was impressed. "The trio seems to be one of the most common group forms to play in jazz, featuring piano, bass and drums." I recently wrote in a contribution about Tamir Hendelman. Last weekend concert in Porgy en Bess Jazz club ( Terneuzen) ( south west part of The Netherlands) learned that it isn't a hard and fast rule: The Jesse Van Ruller trio, featuring Jesse on the guitar, Joris Roelofs on (bass-)clarinet and Clemens Van Der Feen on double bass learned that more roads lead to Rome. A remarkable combination with a special sound and no-one in the audience missed the percussion. A special Christmas concert in Porgy en Bess.
