I really like those B3-Organ Trios popular during the 1950s and 1980s as played by Lou Donaldson ( with Dr. Lonnie Smith, the guy with the Turban, who fascinates me with their "head bobbin', finger-snapping swing, grounded in the blues, and grits-and-gravy grooves", as Rick Anderson wrote in an All Music review about JC Stylles Organ Trio latest album. JC Stylles, Australian born guitar player, surprises with his latest album Exhilaration and Other States - a great groovy album. Don't miss it. JC Stylles- Exhilaration and Other States Durium

If you've ever heard the guitar as played by Stanley Jordan, you might think that two guitar players make music at the same time. He developed the so-called tap and touch technique, which means that he prefers to tap the strings of the instrument with both hands, which allows him to play two independent lines and to comp against his own solos. ( Jim Ferguson). He invited some good friends to join him at his latest album, entiteld Friends. Stanley Jordan meets Friends Durium

Although I'm not a 78rpm record collector to the letter, I love to have certain record labels in my collection, because they tell a story. I found an early Blue Note record, released as the first 10-inch by Alfred Lion, the founder of the Blue Note in 1939. An early Blue Note record Durium

Sam Most is one of those jazz legends of the 1950s that seems to be forgotten now. During the 1950s he was the first one who played bebop on his flute. He used the technique of humming and singing, while playing the melody line on his flute, which gives a very special effect, that fits well into his music. Sam Most is scheduled with the Rein De Graaff Trio in a Dutch tour labelled as Master of the Flute. The trio of Rein will be enlarged with Ellister Van Der Molen on trumpet and in Groningen with Ben van Gelder on alto saxophone. During the 1950s it seemed to have been a real obsession for jazz musicians to make a recording ... with strings. Now a days, strings are made in a digital way, settled jazz musicians seem to dream about making their own big band recording ... with their own compositions or arrangements: expensive projects. Roy Hargrove did two years ago and this month Christian McBride releases his first Big Band album, entitled The Good Feeling. McBride's Big Band debut on the Mack Avenue label has become a valuable and a must-have and, for your information, no audible strings at all ( except Christian's excellent double bass of course. The music as played by orchestras during the five years of German occupation in Holland is not my most favorite, mostly because the sound quality is often so-so and swing is far away as the officials had announced in their conditions that negroide- en negritische elementen (= negro and negro-like elements) were not allowed in dance- of light music. - The music recorded by The Ramblers or Johnny and Jones are labeled as In Een Landerige Stemming, Wat Een Weer, Wat Een Weer or Hindernisrennen, drolling titles, with perfectly hidden swing elements. The Dick Willebrandts orchestra was extreme popular during the war. In the summer of 1943 the band was forced to become part of a new series of radio programs by the Deutsche Europa Sender, a Dutch radio station regulated buy the Nazis, hoping that the Dutch fans would tune in for their favorite orchestra. Dick Willebrandts was allowed to play, inside the walls of the studio, his swing music, US standards, no restrictions at all for the repertoire or the way howe to play it. These D.E.S. tunes, recorded on glass-based records, are now released as Dick Willebrandts en zijn Radio-Orkest: Yearning (DJ 008). Keep Swinging was suprised to learn that its tracks have great swinging arrangements, recorded in occupied Holland, allowed by a regime that fordid jazz and swing music in public. There are but few living musicians who know how to play hot jazz in the rich tradition of the Roaring Twenties, as played by bands like Fletcher Henderson, Jabbo Smith or Tiny Parham, to list some. Cornet player Jean-Pierre Morel is the unrivalled high priest of 1920s Hot Jazz. Known from bands like Charquet et Co, Les Petit Jazz Band de Mr. Morel and his Les Rois du Fox-Trot has won his spurs to keep the 1920s spirit alive. Recently his latest album Fireworks was released, a collection of unforgettable and often forgotten 1920s classics. Keep Swinging loves to share this kind of albums which learn how to play hot jazz- and dance music as if the great legends returned to earth special for you. Weather Report must have been one of the most important Jazz-Rock groups from the 1970s, founded by his two major instrumentalists Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter 40 years ago. Late 1970s Weather Report was at the very height of its success and featured, except Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, guitar legend Jaco Pastorius and drummer Peter Erskine. In September - October 1978 they toured along Europe and were scheduled for a dozen concerts; the live concert at the Stadthalle in Offenbach was recorded and is now available on a 2cd album and a DVD, which offers this complete concert. A must-have for all Weather Report fans. Weather Report: Live in Offenbach 1978 Durium the 10 most popular Keep Swinging blogs

Long ago jazz musicians were born in communities where they learned to play the music by ear, joining the eldery, who had learned to play it in the same way. No conservatories or music schools to learn how to syncopate or swing ........ they even repudiate this kind of music. Nowadays students from all over the world learn how to play jazz and contemporary music in schools like Berklee College of Music in Boston (MA). Most established jazz musicians nowadays studied at conservatories like Berklee and these places seem to be breeding grounds for young talented musicians. The album Octave, released by Berklee's, learns that it has a lot of talents among its graduates. A must for each serious jazz collector, who wants to hear the stars of the 2020s. I was surprised to learn that the Matt Nowlin Orchestra had released its first LP-album entitled The Good News. Nowadays LP-issues seem to be just for a select audience, but the band didn't stagnate; it keeps up with the times as the music can also obtained as a download. Although the way this music was recorded was based on early stereo recordings of the 1950s and '60s, the band doesn't copy the big band music of that period - they do not recreate the idea of what jazz used to sound like or should still sound like. Matt Nowlin did a good job composing and arranging this music; that band just swings. Matt Nowlin Jazz Orchestra Durium

Monty Alexander, born in Jamaica, moved to the States 50 years ago, where he became one of the leading US jazz piano players nowadays. His swinging trio recordings remind the great Oscar Peterson Trio and if he plays you can hear that he was fascinated by the great Erroll Garner. But his roots are located in Kingston, Jamaica, his native region - the island of reggae music. Recently his latest album, Harlem-Kingston Express was released, where he plays with two rhythm sections: one to express his Caribian roots and the others for his swinging jazz tunes. And according to my whims, he says in the liner notes, as I start playing the music, and the spirit moves me, I say, "I think I want to go Uptown right now. We're going to go to 125th Street (Harlem),". Bap! and I give it to the (Jazz) trio. Then I say, "alright, we're going right down to Trenchtown (Kingston)" and then at the right moment, I invite everybody to share in this world experience. A great album - a great experience. The Brazilian Trio Baru released its first album under its own name, entitled Alma Brasileira. The Trio Baru was founded six years ago and plays Choro-Music, a music style that goes back to the 1870s when musicians in Rio the Janeiro developed this creative musical style. Some people put Choro music or Chorinho on a par with the early US jazz styles, like Ragtime and Dixieland music and that's not so strange as you can say that it has, more or less, the same roots,it developed into the same periodes and it has also a kind of collective improvisation. Bill Evans is one of those legendary jazz piano players in post war jazz that influenced the scene. A lot of known and less known pianists like Michel Petrucciani and Enrico Pieranunzi were inspired by his music. Jazz is not a "what", it is a "how" seems to have been said by Bill Evans, a quote I found, which wants to express his meaning that Jazz music is made at the moment you play it - that improvisation is the most important element of Jazz. In de 1970s Bill performed three times at the Tros radio program entitled Sesjun and these concerts are now available on a great 2-cd album in the series The Sesjun Radio Shows. Guess what I found lately on a jumble sales........ ? I' m not a real 78rpm collector, but fascinated by special or rare seen record labels. This 78rpm record, LP-sized, by the New Organolians, released by the Overseas Recorded Broadcasting Service fascinated me and I found out that it was similiar to the better known V-Disc, released by the US Army during the Second World War.
