Curiosity hipped the cat ....... The cat in question is Joe Alterman, a pianist with a swinging touch - with these words the liner notes of Joe Alterman's second album start. Newly minted from New York University he surprises with his second abum (featuring the great tenor saxophone player Houston Person), which learns that he has listened very well to the 1950s piano trios by Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, whose rhythm section was backing him in his second album; Give Me The Simple Life. Most of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker and Bill Evans early recordings have been reissued in cheap budget boxes, a grab bag for collectors, but stabbed the serious record companies to the heart ...... Limetree and Resonance recently released two excellent live albums by the Bill Evans Trio, recorded in the Top of the Gate in New York City (1968) and the Stadsschouwburg in Groningen ( The Netherlands) - both in an excellent sound quality. Two essentials! Mike Del Ferro leads a busy life with concerts and work shops .. not only in his native country Holland, but all around the world; even in exotic and remote places, where they don't have a word for his kind of music ..... Like a 16th Century explorer, he visited and performed in almost 100 different countries where he loves to play and be inspired by local musicians. In a series of a dozen albums, to be released by Challenge Records, he loves to share these experiences ... This series is entitled The Journey and recently its first album was released - a preview ( or shall I say pre-ear)for the rest of the series: The Journey. Keep an eye on this Dutch pianist .... Eric Ineke, one of the best Dutch drummers, time keeper for over 45 years for hundreds of jazz musicians, national and international, recorded up his recollections, together with his friend and colleague, saxophone player Dave Liebman. It is a book you will love to study closely from beginning to end or just use it as a reference work Musicians love to talk about musicians .... Recently Virginia Mayhew released two albums, both dedicated to two icons in jazz: Mary Lou Williams and Duke Ellington. A few years ago Virginia Mayhew and her Quartet ( + Wycliffe Gordon as special guest) honored the great composter and piano player Mary Lou Williams who should have celebrated het centenial: The Next 100 Years, part of the title of the album, suggests that her music should be played for ever .... Virginia Mayhew is also the musical director of the Duke Ellington Legacy band, led by Duke's grandson. A tribute of Duke's music entitled: Single Petal of a Rose, you shouldn't miss. Sumi Tonooka is one of those modern jazz piano players rather unknown in this part of the world. Since her debut album in 1986 she is a celebrated and respected pianist, inspired more then 40 years ago by the music of Thelonious Monk. In her latest album Now she goes solo - the ultimate test of a musicians's resourcefulness, an existential leap onto a lonely stage with nowhere to hide .... Sumi Tonooka - Now Durium

One of the most important guitarist in the post-Django period, one of the treasurers of Django Reinhardt's musical legacy, is Fapy Lafertin. The North Sea Jazz Festival belongs to the top music festivals of the world. Although the name suggests, Jazz is no longer the main music style that can be heard - the festival schedules dozens of music styles, from Funk, Hip Hop and Fusion to World Music, Jazz and Modern Creative, but the more (common) jazz fan, will find dozens of concerts that can fascinate and surprise him. For me, the first day of the 2012 edition was the night of the jazz legends ...... North Sea Jazz Festival - Friday 6th of July 2012 Durium

This album surprised me - this young talented violin player, inspired by the sound of veteran violist Stéphane Grappelli, known for his cooperation with Django Reinhardt, has released its second album entitled New Street and features his quartet in some own compositions and standards, which learn that this promising violin player is ready for a great career as a jazz artist. He tributes with his Stephane Grappelli Tribute Trio with veteran vibraphone player Gary Burton the legendary French violinist Stéphane Grappelli who passed away fifteen years ago ........ The Dutch Millers band, or The Miller Sextet, belonged, together with the Ramblers and the Dutch Swing College Band to the most popular traditional jazz and swing bands of the post war period. Its music had swing and its sound was easy recognizable and accessible. Do you remember its concerts? the liner notes of a 1982 Dutch LP-album reads: During the summer season they played in the Kakatoe-club at the Gevers-Denootplein in Scheveningen ( the beach resort of The Hague) and in winter at De Wiek in Rotterdam. From early in the evening until the wee hours of the morning, night after night, it threw a party .... - "Gone ..!", It's all gone now, but the memory lingers on........ Doctor Jazz Magazine revives these sweet memories with: The Millers onder leiding van Ab de Molenaar (1945-1961) - Gone ...! The Millers (o.l.v. Ab De Molenaar) 1945-1961) Durium

The Norwegian born US trombone player Jens Wendelboe belongs, as All About Jazz label him, to the head of the class among contemporary big-band composers and arrangers. For me, Jens was new and when I played myself the first tune I ever heard from him, the Clifford Brown composition Joy Spring, he hit me right in my heart. What a great swinging steaming, hot, brassy ensemble ........... Give him your ears. He's really great! Jens Wendelboe Big Band - Fresh Heat Durium

Devin Gray is one of those young drummers who deserves further recognition. I look forward to watching the career trajectory of this special talent, Steve Grover, senior drummer said about him. The most well known chromatic harmonica player must be Toots Thielemans, the legendary Belgian player, now in his 90s, who changed the guitar long ago for his Muziekske, as he calls his tiny instrument. Grégoire Maret is a young Swiss born harmonicist who hopes to follow in his footsteps. Although recording with numerous great names in jazz, like Cassandra Wilson, Pat Metheny, Marcus Miller and Herbie Hancock, he never recorded under his own name. A few month ago he released his long-waited self-titled debut album. A must for all those fans who like the music of the harmonica. Grégoire Maret debut album Durium

The name of his group sounds like a Memphis jazz or blues man: Rick Drumm and Fatty Necroses and even the openings tune Fatty Necrosis Sings The Blues suggests that, but ..... nothing is further from the thruth ..... Rick Drumm's, in his fifties, debut album has all to do with his treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and while suffering several rounds of chemo he and his friends decided to make music ..... and to record this album. We played together when we could, but as I recovered, we formed a real band, and I named it Fatty Necroses, because although the doctors got most of my cancer, they left some dead tissue in places too difficult to reach. So I’ve still got fatty necroses inside of me. Fatty Necroses sounded to me like an old Memphis jazz or blues man, and I liked it, so that’s our name. If you like jazz as played by great names like Chick Corea's Return for Ever or Miles' In a Silent Way this album should be in your collection. The trombone is one of those instruments that fascinate me. I was very lucky to hear Bob Brookmeyer, the legendary valve trombonist who recently passed away,in a concert with his Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam two years ago. As the leader of the band he took his instrument and played 16 bars, before he dropped his instrument ....... and started conducting his orchestra for the rest of the set. These 16 bars ..... ! Marshall Gilkes, slide trombone player at the WDR Big Band has a lot in common with Bob. Not only that he plays (almost) the same instrument, he is also a great composer and arrranger. In his latest album Sound Stories, which he made with his US Quintet, he proofs what a great composer and arranger he is. A great album that surprised me. Marshall Gilkes - Sound Stories Durium

For some jazz fans Big Bands are monstrous antique artifact of a bygone time: Duke Ellington - Count Basie - Woody Herman - Gil Evans or Thad Jones. Nothing is further from the truth .... Big Bands are still breeding grounds and centre for creative jazz composers and arrangers. One of those orchestras is Michael Treni's Big Band. Recently Michael released his fourth album since his comeback in jazz mid 1990s, entitled Boy's Night Out: The arrangements soar, the soloists sizzle, the ideas flow, and the band is a winner, the booklet quotes George Fendel about the band. If you're a lover of well arranged big band music, try to get yourself a copy of this great album. Michael Treni Big Band - Boy's Night Out Durium

How many live jazz shows have you seen in your life?
Durium replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I started to make a list of concerts years ago ..... as a reminder ......... Of course, the first years are not complete and to the letter - but since ca. 1995 it is rather complete. Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw (dir. Henk Meutgeert) guest: Jimmy Heath Porgy en Bess Jazz Club - terneuzen ( The Netherlands) 1st of April, 2012 A memorable concert - saxophone player Jimmy Heath joined the Dutch Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, one of the best big bands of the world, in a concert at the famous small cosy jazz club Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen( The Netherlands). A memorable concert, not only because of the great compositions that were selected, but also because of its guest saxophone player and composer of all those tunes, Jimmy Heath, who joined, 85 years young, the big band at two boiling sets .... Jimmy Heath, one of the last living, stil active, icons of jazz, a contemporary and colleague of legends like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Miles Davis, signed my beloved Miles Davis 1953 Blue Note albums, with the words Miles for ever. Thanks for history ... Jimmy! Jimmy Heath - Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw Durium
