  9. I'm glad you had a better experience than we did. We had an older model from about 4 years ago, maybe they are better now. For $200 we expected it to last longer than 13 months (just after the warranty expired) before having the electronics break down. That controls the delay grind & brew so the thing is now basically worthless. French presses work great, but produce fairly sediment laden coffee unless you let it settle for awhile. On the River, we boil about 2-3 gallons of water, then take it off the heat and dump in a pound of high quality ground coffee, wait about 10-15 minutes, then pour it through a strainer into an insulated dispenser with a spigot. On cool fall trips, we keep it strapped to the raft frame and have access to hot coffee all morning as we float...

  12. "TOCJ" could mean a lot of things- BN Works Series remasters (unlikely), JRVG/RVG remasters (more likely), TOCJ24 remasters (very possible). Do you have any more specific info about these reissues?

  17. Thanks Hans! holyghost, I was pretty sure that the US versions didn't use Japanese remasters. What I was curious about was whether the first Japan issues were separate remasters or just used the US versions. Hans seems to have straightened this out- sounds as if there were different catalog numbers but the first US and Japan CD issues used identical remasterings. Thus it would be silly to pay $30-40 for a Japan version (as I had suspected) unless there is some huge difference due to manufacturing standards, which I doubt...
  18. Bumping up for more African Music recommendations, I've been really enjoying the Analog Africa and Sterns reissues of 70's vintage stuff...do you experts have any more recs in that vein? Also, I've been checking into the large Ethiopiques issue series. Which ones should I start with? There seem to be at least 20..
  19. I'm curious about the first round of Blue Note CD issues. Can anyone tell me if the first US issues- the ones with the silver and blue BN logos from the late 1980's, later reissued in the early 1990's as the "Collector's Choice" series with white and blue logos- used the same mastering as the early Japanese Blue Note CDs, i.e. ones with the CP28, CP32 prefixes? I'm talking about the CDs that predate and were superceded by the BN Works "TOCJ" series. The early Japanese issues sometimes go for big bucks on a certain other site, but I contend that they are the same masterings as the early US issues, which in most cases sell for only a few bucks used on Amazon. I'd like to know whether or not this is true...
