DATE: 7/13/2006 ORDER #: 5688 Got my shipping confirmation and tracking number yesterday. Haven't received my order yet, but at least it is on the way! Sure seems like they could get these orders out faster, but I guess I can't complain too much at $3/CD...

I hope your notice included a tracking number Ghost! Chuck got two different kinds of confirmation notices- one with a tracking number and one without. He received only the order for which he had the tracking number. My order confirmation (received 7-14, listed ship date 7-18) didn't have a tracking number. I just spoke with Concord about my order. They told me they'd had a "glitch" in their system, and that the confirmation/shipping notice I received on 7-14 was incorrect. As of today, my order is "at the warehouse", 7 business days later, technically still within the 5-7 days they say they need to "process" the order. What's up with all this "processing?" Why does it take a week? And why are some shipments shipping faster than others? Did they do some kind of background check into my eerie past as an itinerant river guide-ski patroller-slacker and move my order to the bottom of the stack? I'll probably never know. I do know that I'm still waiting for a shipping confirmation notice that has one of those coveted tracking numbers...

Ordering TOCJ24's from Hiroshi at Early Records would be a good way to go and is fairly cost effective if you order more than 1-2 CDs. There is no better person to do business with. Having said that, the TOCJ24 of this title appears to be available as a special order through Tower, for $18.99. They currently have free shipping on orders over $20 and free shipping plus 15% off on orders over $40. Given that the TOCJ24 of this title was just released in March, I think Tower could probably fill a special order.

I called Concord today too, and spoke with a person named Yousuf who told me the same thing about orders "processing" 5-7 days after they are received and shipping soon after that. He said my order was at the warehouse but had not shipped yet. I explained that this seemed at odds with the email confirmation I got, which said my order would ship on July 18th (2 days ago). I also explained that I was part of a gang of jazz fans and many of our orders seemed to be shipping willy nilly with not much logic to the order or relationship to the confirmation emails. He said they had heard similar things from some other customers, and were starting to think some of the confirmation emails were going out erroneously. He asked me to forward him the email, which I did. Haven't heard back.

Well, I obviously won't get my Coltrane box since I only placed the order last night. Saves me $$$. No need to be upset. I was about to pull the trigger on the Coltrane box as well, so this saves me some $$$ too.

That sounds like good news. Just curious, do you know what your order number was? Here it is: DATE: 7/13/2006 ORDER #: 5688

I just received an order confirmation, saying that all the items I ordered had "shipped" even though the ship date is listed as next Tuesday. Hopefully that means the order is boxed up and ready to go. Here is a sample of the text. Each item was listed in similar fashion: Ordered: 1 Shipped: 1 PRCD-7180-2 Gene Ammons - Boss Tenor $2.98 Ship Date: 7/18/2006

Thanks for posting this link (I think). I just bought 30 discs- the entire CCR catalog, bunch of K2's (Davis, Evans, Rollins, etc) some country blues.

Moving this thread to the top again to ask if any of the domestic K2's in this series are available at yourmusic?

Starting from near complete ignorance about jazz, my two main sources of information have been the All Music Guide, and lurking here and the old Blue Note Bulletin Board (BNBB) site. I started with a hard copy of the AMG and found it to be a revelation- "addictively brouseable" as stated on the cover. Over time, I learned that Scott Yanow seemed to provide reviews on AMG that generally squared with my own tastes. Not always, but usually. One could quibble about some of his reviews, but I trust them for the most part. AMG's Thom Jurek, on the other hand, writes (to me) verbose but largely impenetrable and pompous reviews that don't tell me a whole lot. But that's another thread... I learned fairly quickly that I preferred jazz from about the mid 50's to mid 60's, but I've branched out some from there. I would see that, for example, Lee Morgan played on one of my favorite Wayne Shorter sessions, and then choose one of Lee's sessions that was positively reviewed on AMG. Finding that I liked that, I would buy more Lee, and then start the process over with, say, Hank Mobley. And so on. This process was frequently informed by discussions here, and searches of the extensive archives- especially on the old BNBB, but Organissimo now has a quite rich archive too, and its growing all the time. So now I have a collection of somewhere around 300 jazz CDs, which is probably small by some standards, but keeps me pretty happy. I've tapered off on my CD buying, but I still make a couple of new purchases each month. The advice to "let your ears be the guide" is good, if you have lots of time on your hands and an opportunity to listen before you buy. I usually don't have either of those so I've found opinions of others invaluable in guiding my purchases from among the literally thousands of releases out there.

FS S Stitt/Tolliver/W Shaw/C Jordan Cds.......
riverrat replied to Jazztropic's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Well that's a good enough recommendation for me! PM sent on "POW".... -
A little late I suppose, but how about a nice vintage Sansui AU-919? One in mint condition would be $4-500 at the most, leaving plenty of room to have the unit upgraded with new caps and other parts. Build quality can't be touched for less than $2000 today, and they sound wonderful- very low distortion, clean, warm, not harsh and grainy at all. One of these amps refurbished with some new parts and with the bias adjusted correctly will kick the butt of most "modern" amplifiers costing 2-3 times the price. Don't laugh until you've heard one...

Can someone provide a list of this series? I have not been following it very closely, but I do have a couple. I agree that this series is great sounding, more natural than many RVGs. Also, what are some of the "must haves"?

Thank you very much Hans!

I'm working on a design for an armoire/cabinet to house my CD collection. All my CDs are in storage until we get into our new house in a few weeks. If someone could provide and accurate measurement of one of their mini-lp sleeves for me, I would greatly appreciate it! I'm planning on having several dresser-style drawers built into the armoire, with dividers so each will hold several rows of CDs. I'm trying to establish the correct spacing for the dividers, and the mini-lps are slightly wider than a jewel case. Thanks in advance!

Yes, I already did for 25 cents. I'm trying to determine if anyone would like to have it- I'm not a vinyl guy. I would pass it on for my packing and shipping costs, if anyone is interested. I agree that this is not a rare item though. But this copy is in near perfect shape.
-
Thanks for providing the historical info. Are any of you folks vinyl fans? I don't currently own a turntable, and I don't plan to get one. I just thought I should rescue this lp from Goodwill where it was gathering dust. The jacket still has the cellophane, and while there is no inner sleeve, the record itself appears to be in mint condition. Obviously, I don't need to sell this for very much to recover my costs!

That's the one!

Not sure why my original post wasn't showing up (probably operator related). Anyway, I found this LP at Goodwill, picked it up for 25 cents: "Jimmy Smith Swings Along With Stranger in Paradise". The lp is in good shape. Can anyone tell me more about this session? AMG does not list it, but I did find a couple copies available online, so I don't think it is rare.

Thank you very kindly for all the recommendations everyone. This gives me plenty to go on.

Not sure if there are any Tom Waits fans here, but I thought I'd check. Which of his many discs rise to the top of the heap for you?

There is a JRVG of "Gigolo". It sounds pretty good, although quite a bit different than the 20-bit TOCJ. I can't really say which I like better, its been awhile since I compared them. I do recall that I didn't have a strong enough preference to get rid of either of them. I also heard that BN was going to start using the same remaster for JRVGs and RVGs. I am not sure if this is true (it makes sense though) and if so, when there started to be just one RVG remaster instead of two. To add to this confusion, there is also now a TOCJ24 of this date- Toshiba TOCJ 6600.

PM sent.

47. But remember 50 is the new 30.

I'm seeing reissues in the new 24-bit TOCJ 6XXX series available more often here in the US too. Not in stores so much (I live in a smaller town) but online at places such as Amazon. For example, Baby Face Willette "Stop and Listen" and "Face to Face" are both available through Amazon Marketplace sellers for less than $16. I'll bet these are what chuckyd4 is seeing. I think this is a great sounding series and I am mildly surprised it didn't make a bigger splash with Organissimo board members. Probably related to "reissue fatigue". I like the JRVG series, but I think the 24-bit TOCJs sound better overall.
