  1. You're right- I don't think a session with strings is where I want to start, but I always enjoy seeing where a threads goes. Who cares what the original point was! And who knows, maybe Alice will expand my mind to the point where a string session will work for me...
  2. Thanks I'll look for these. I like to think I'm not hopelessly conventional and unadventurous- I do like some of Jackie Mac's semi-free stuff, but some of the structureless screeching of full-blown free jazz I guess I just do not get...
  3. I recently heard a story on Alice Coltrane on NPR, put together in remembrance after she passed away recently. They played some clips of her music- I've never listened to anything by her, but I liked what little I heard on the NPR piece. I had always assumed that since the spacey titles of many of her releases were similar to those of husband John's later stuff, that the music would be similar as well. I am NOT a big fan of late period John Coltrane. I'm not qualified to judge the technical merit, which I've read is pretty incredible, but I find most of his completely free, wild stuff almost unlistenable. So I didn't bother to check out any of Alice's stuff. In addition to jazz, I listen to a lot of "world" music- I mostly prefer the more organic, less produced and poppy stuff. I also tend to like stuff that sounds like a world music/jazz hybrid. Sooo, I guess I need to get to know Alice's work! I ordered the Japanese version of "Journey in Satchidananda" from Amazon for a start. Where should I go from there?
  4. Which ones?
  5. Some of these are available as TOCJ24s for decent prices, e.g. ~$16.
  6. $6.99 for me, since Jan. 1. I'm glad some folks are still getting the old price, even if I'm not...but it is strange!
  7. I wonder if there is any chance that you got the old price because yourmusic is honoring that price for any selections that were already in our queues at the end of last year?
  8. Thanks for reminding me about this one. Just ordered it.
  9. Does anyone know the story on this upcoming U.S. release of the same session? I like the price better, never heard of the label! Prestidigitator CD Universe
  10. My skills with computers and software are quite primitive, but I managed to follow all the steps in CHRIS MYDEN'S GUIDE and get EAC and LAME to work seamlessly together the very first time. Now my problem is storage for my MP3's... Quite a surprise to me- I was expecting to have problems because I usually do in such instances!
  11. You still have a lot of room for improvement. Check out the other stuff available on the machina dynamica site: Machina Dynamica My favorites are the "Brilliant Pebbles" series.

  15. Not me. Solid happens to be one of my favorite Grant Green albums. Same. Everybody talks about Grant & (insert name here), but What about Grant & Elvin, huh? For somebody like Grant whose phrasing was all about the rhythm, you gotta look at Elvin. Add my voice to the list. I'm not the biggest fan of GG, but "Solid" is GREAT. I wish he would have recorded more sessions with this format.
  16. I've had exactly the same experience and no longer use Caiman either. Their service is not the worst, I eventually got a refund on a SACD that didn't play right. But I found it very annoying that they often list CDs that they do not stock and cannot get. They also refuse to directly address questions about these matters. I actually left them negative feedback over this issue, the first time I ever left negative feedback for anyone. I think I saw some of their recent listings on Amazon which specify that the item is "in stock", so maybe they are changing their ways. But I still avoid them.
  17. Yes a "VEE" instead of a "VME". Always got those mixed up.
  18. Shortly after spending a ridiculous amount for a copy of the the long OOP and nearly impossible to find Verve Master Edition version of this title, I learned that it was due to be reissued in Japan. It is now available HERE and other places. Has anyone picked up the new reissue? Any comments on its sound vis a vis the VME version? This is a great session and despite the fact that my VME has now plunged in value, it's good to see it available again. Deserves it's reputation as one of Lateef's best IMO.
  19. Great idea. Hope it comes to pass.
  20. Amazon has a couple copies, but not cheap...
  21. Just noticed this offering while trolling on eBay- $5 plus $3.50 shipping, 6 hours left. Good price for a nice OOP session from c. ~1989. I'm not affiliated with seller, don't know them, etc. Just though I'd pass this along if anyone is interested: Hill Eternal Spirit AMG: "Andrew Hill returned to the Blue Note label (where he made many significant releases during 1963-80) for a stimulating quintet date with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, altoist Greg Osby, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Ben Riley in 1989. The pianist's six originals (which are joined by three alternate takes on the CD) his dense chords behind the other improvisers and his own unpredictable solos are not all overshaowed by his talented sideman, even Osby who is heard in particularly inspired form. There are no weak performances on this superb post bop effort, Andrew Hill's strongest recording in several years."
  22. I greatly appreciate Mosaic's efforts to bring unavailable music back into circulation, and also to present multiple sessions by an artist in a coherent, comprehensive fashion. Having said that, given a choice, I prefer versions that mimic the individual releases. I like to see the original cover art. I like to envision the package of music as it was originally released. Mosaic serves an indispensible service making otherwise out of reach or obscure music available to a much wider range of listeners. But personally I generally favor the individual releases.
  23. After making do with a one-size-fits-all AV system for many years, I managed to obtain official permission from the Chief to have a dedicated 2-channel system in our "great" room, with the TV/DVD stuff upstairs in the "media" room. I've put together a relatively modest, but to my ears good sounding system, some old some new: Sansui AU-D11 Mk II amp (c. 1984 refurbed and sounding great) Sony SCD222 ES CD/SACD player/changer (c. 2002) Sansui TU-719 tuner (c. 1978) Onkyo T-9 Tuner (c. 1976) Totem Sttaf speakers (good WAF w/the Chief, significanly less b*tching about speakers in the living room since these replaced my ancient Speakerlab S-3s.) Radio Shack speaker cables (haven't really bought into the "audiophile" cable thing) THESE MCM interconnects I have about $1800 into this system, about $1100 was for the speakers. For awhile I was looking into a mid-fi single CD player (e.g. used Rega Planet or similar) as an upgrade and complement to the Sony. But now I'm thinking that a stand-alone DAC might give the best bang for the buck. I've never had a stand-alone DAC, just starting to learn about them. From what I understand, CD transport technology is not progressing nearly as fast as DAC technology, so it makes sense to separate these functions. With a much more revealing amp and speakers, I'm looking to clean up the digital CD playback of the Sony. Currently looking at THIS DAC. My questions: 1. Are there any other relatively inexpensive (i.e. <$300) DACs I should consider? 2. Am I on the right track- i.e. is a DAC likely to provide the most bang for the buck in improved sound? Thanks in advance to all you audio pros for any advice you can provide!
  24. There is a BMG version of the 20-bit for $9.99 HERE and another one that the seller says "has a different cover, but is the remaster" (may just not have the carboard sleeve shown in the picture, who knows, maybe ask the seller?) for $9.15 HERE There is also a JVC XRCD version for $18.99 HERE There also appear to be some copies available on GEMM. I was lucky enough to score a copy of the DCC version for a relatively affordable price awhile back- I agree it sounds great.
  25. Maybe it is time to let folks know about this helpful tool for describing ultra high end audio systems: HIGH END BULLSHIT GENERATOR FOR AUDIO MAGAZINE WRITERS
