Last week I got volume four of this series, "The Art of Four," (of course ), with Donald Harrison added to the group and the late James Williams in place of Barron. Quite nice. luca

It has also been issued in Germany by In+Out Records: link I think they also sell online. Luca

It's extremely difficult - let's say impossible - that it will ever come out on Cd. It's a 2 LP set. There are some great stories behind it, of course. And it was a big mess

Yes, I was there...

In the Cd era, one of the first was the Bluebird reissue of Gil Evans' "There Comes a Time". I remember that was one of the reasons I bought a Cd player way back then!

Not quite. Air Time on Nessa is in print, and is certainly one of their best. Imo it is their best. All their Black Saint CDs are in print as well. luca

In his Bowie obituary on the Village Voice, Gary Giddins wrote that "perhaps the symbolic moment of transition between the Art Ensemble Lester and the Brass Fantasy Lester took place in February 1979 at Symphony Space, when he conducted the 59-piece Sho' Nuff Orchestra, with a cast that amazed then and seems dreamlike now; the reed section alone included Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, Anthony Braxton, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, David Murray, Arthur Blythe, John Stubblefield, Frank Lowe, Frank Wright, and Charles Tyler." He was there, it seems. After a Brass Fantasy concert in Florence (in 1992) I asked Lester about the Sho' Nuff thing. I can't remember all what he said, but it looks like they shared the stage with the Sun Ra Arkestra and a Cecil Taylor large ensemble. I think that there's a photo of the band on the back cover of Lester's All the Magic LP on ECM. That's all I know. luca

Never knew of a CD version of this. I have the LP, which is very good, but I think that Storyville has no more rights on that session - they licensed it from Japanese Victor. luca

To catch up with the Mosaic box, you need Contemporary Concepts and New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm, of course. But the box has some odds and ends that haven't been reissued yet. luca

It's a fantastic record, one of Hamp's best (maybe THE best). luca

There's also the wonderful Hill Country Suite, by the Bobby Jones trio, with George Mraz and Freddie Waits. Recorded in 1974 and released on Enja. http://www.jazzrecords.com/enja/2046.htm This is a great session, IMHO, and the poor Bobby Jones, while completely forgotten today, was a very good player. luca

I think that a Kenton record which would fit your requirements well is Adventures in Blues, easily available on a Capitol CD. It has swing, drive, intelligence and surprise (and very good arrangements, mostly by the underrated Gene Roland). I used a track from it for my recent Blindfold test, and I succeeded in fooling almost everyone luca

Anyway, it's not from Pesaro, but from the Pescara Jazz Festival (a couple hundred miles down south), on July 18, 1969. It was the second set of the evening; first one on stage was the Bill Evans Trio (on a Lotus bootleg as well). If you take a look here http://www.pescarajazz.com/flash/index.htm and then click on "PJ 1969", the complete program of the festival will pop up (in the Gallery there's also a photo of Philly Joe before -or after - that concert). luca

In that case, the recently reissued "Stan Kenton Today" should do. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stan-Kenton-Today-...n/dp/B0006840IE It's a double CD, recorded in London, 1970, and originally issued by Decca (in its old "Phase 4 Stereo Spectacular Series). Now it's on Vocalion. A very good concert, imho, and it is LOUD luca

True. I was wrong. Sorry, Mr. Tiberi.

Hasn't Tiberi recently died? And what's going to happen to his tapes? luca

Availability of Horo releases
Eloe Omoe replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Most of them BTW, Horo's owner also issued a live Freddie Hubbard 5-LP set, on a label called "Black Shell". That's a real collector's item, and the music is quite good (it's from the quintet with Dave Schnitter and Larry Klein). luca -
I think it's a nice, swinging record. Not a masterpiece but, hey, those are uncommon anyway. Luca

if i'm not wrong i have a Camden release which combines all 3 albums from Pepper Adams released by Muse Marcus You're right. It was a nice series, even if its booklets were full of errors. Luca

PM sent, I'm in. Luca

Rearward has a whole bookshelf of CBBB tapes (and scores, and tons of assorted memorabilia). I saw 'em, it was like being in a candy store

Last week I went to Udine to interview Manfred Eicher for Musica Jazz magazine (he was there mixing some records due to come out in the next months - in particular, there's a new Rava quintet CD that sounds very, very good). Of course, my first question was why The Jewel in the Lotus hasn't been reissued yet He told me that it will definitely be reissued soon. According to Eicher, the master tapes are really in bad shape, since they were recorded with a noise reduction system much in use at the time but which has caused many problems to the tapes themselves. He also told me that he had just met Maupin at the ECM headquarters (Maupin had been playing in Munich that week). Funny thing was, as soon as I pronounced Maupin's name, Eicher started to sing the melody of Mappo Luca

There's plenty of unissued CBBB material in the Gigi Campi archives, now in possession of Rearward/Schema label here in Italy. They have long been considering the possibility of a box set, and I think it will definitely happen (but in the long run). Luca
