  1. Which, by the way, is the same tune played by John Scofield, Pullen (on organ) and Marvin Smitty Smith under the title "Charlie Chan" in Scofield's DVD "Live 3 Ways" (Blue Note). luca
  2. Haven't heard this CD, but Bruno Marini is an excellent baritonist, maybe the best in Italy (and he can play a mean B-3, too). He has recorded quite a lot in a Hammond setting, mostly for small labels (but he has a couple CDs on Splasch).
  3. Yes, I guess in France it must have had a bigger circulation. Solal is quite popular in Italy (he plays here a lot and has recorded for many Italian labels - he's still doing that, his new CAM CD is great) , but his records have never sold much. luca
  4. Absolutely. I bought it when it came out, and I've never seen another copy around. luca
  5. First two LPs are called "Les Introuvables", and feature tracks with Roger Guérin (quartet, 1959), some trios with Guy Pedersen and Daniel Humair, Gilbert Rovere and Charles Bellonzi, Cesarius Alvim and Humair, Rovere and Humair and two pieces with a big band (one from 1962, the other from 1985), plus three solo tracks. The third LP is subtitled "Standards en solo... ou comment s'en débarrasser", and has six tracks from 1974 to 1982. The last LP ("Rencontres") has duo tracks with, in turn, Grappelli, Konitz, John Lewis, Didier Lockwood, NHOP and Jean-Louis Chautemps. First LP is about 44 minutes long; the second is 48, the third is 37 and the fourth is 40. Something must be missing anyway. The cover of the LP box set is the white one. luca
  6. In the same series, there was also a great 4-LP box by Martial Solal ("Live 1959/85", with Konitz, , John Lewis, Grappelli, Humair, NHOP and many others), from which 2 CD have been extracted. Even in this case, I suspect that some tracks went missing (but I've never seen those CDs - I only have the LP box set). luca
  7. Philology's been working on that
  8. In the meantime, I've found my double LP. There are four tracks missing (the duo with Portal should be on the CD): Rhythm-a-ning: Roger Guerin (tp), Pierre Michelot(b), D.Humair(dr) April 12, 1966 Bram Van Velde: Franco Ambrosetti (tp), John English (tb), François Jeanneau (as), David Friedman (vib), Henri Texier (b), Daniel Humair(dr) January 17, 1981 Crac: Jean-Louis Chautemps (ts), J.F. Jenny-Clark (b), Daniel Humair (dr) May 25, 1981 Posez Baguettes: Jean-Pierre Drouet, Pierre Favre, Daniel Humair (perc.) August 22, 1982
  9. Is that a double CD? I have the original 2-LP version, and I wonder how they could squeeze everything into a single CD. luca
  10. Thanks, Brownie. Just what I was looking for luca
  11. It's all very strange. In the CD version, I just can't hear any bass player. Fact is, you were talking about two different dates, but the whole CD is said as being recorded on July 16, 1958, and the 1999 Cuscuna liner notes - as well the personnel listing on the CD - do not refer to any bass player. Could it be that the version you have on LP might've been recorded the day before, with Donald Bailey on bass, for a single release, and that they did record a second version - without bass - the day after? The CD track is 3:55. How long is the LP one? luca
  12. Sure I trust Cuscuna but I'm listening to that track just now, and if there's a bass player he must be hiding himself very well... luca
  13. Are you sure, Brownie? I have that Smith CD, Six Views of the Blues , but there's no bass player there (whereas Donald Bailey - the drummer - is present on three of the six tracks). luca
  14. On Sonny Rollins' Vanguard Blue Note CDs, there are a couple of pieces with Pete LaRoca and a mysterious bass player named Donald Bailey, whom I never heard of before or after that date. In the liner notes of the original LP, Leonard Feather says he was from Baltimore, but he seems to have disappeared forever after the Rollins gig. Who was that guy? Did he really exist? Could it be a pseudonym, maybe for - a wild guess - bass player Don Bagley? BTW, another mysterious guy on Blue Note is vibraphonist Donald Best, on Donald Byrd's A New Perspective luca
  15. Count me in. I'm Higgins' Italian translator, so I think I've read (and worked on) most of his novels. And I still think that The Friends of Eddie Coyle is one of the really great American novels of the 20th century (after James Crumley's The Last Good Kiss, of course -which I also had the pleasure and joy of translating into Italian ) luca
  16. I just received both DVD and CD (the 2-CD version). They have the same tracklist, so "Ballroom in the Sky" is on both. DVD is 126 minutes long, and it's the European version (PAL). luca
  17. This one has been "easier" to get reissued, as far as I know, since it wasn't an all-original ICP production (it came out on adLib, a small label run by Roberto Masotti, a well-known photographer often associated with ECM). Anyway, it's a very good record, and great fun. luca
  18. RCA Spain reissued this on CD several years ago! RCA France, too (I have it that way). luca
  19. Yes - but I couldn't find information about this CD on their website... I happen to know the guy at Imprint. If anyone is interested in obtaining this CD, please pm me and I'll try to get any relevant info from him. luca
  20. I happened to hear the group live several times, in recent years, and they were far more interesting than on disc (even if the CDs are quite good,, in my opinion). Last time I saw them, in fact, there was Mark Turner added on tenor sax, and the music was great. Maybe ECM should've released a live album. luca
  21. A very interesting disc, imho. If the price is right, buy it. luca
  22. Kuhn has a new record out on Blue Note in the next weeks (trio, live, w/Ron Carter and Al Foster).
  23. The small Italian independent Imprint Records (www.imprint-profeta.com) has just reissued (first time on CD) this rare ICP Orchestra LP, recorded live in Italy in 1979, originally issued by adLib Records. Misha Mengelberg, piano; Eugenio Colombo, alto saxophone, flute; Larry Fishkind, tuba; Renato Geremia, tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, violin; Baldo Maestri, alto saxophone, soprano saxophone; Enrico Rava, trumpet; Giancarlo Schiaffini, trombone; Gianluigi Trovesi, alto saxophone, soprano saxphone, bass clarinet; Han Bennink, percussion. 1. Flute (07.52) 2. Brozziman (05.30) 3. Islay malt jetterbug (05.31) 4. Peer's country song (06.47) 5. Interplay (12.06) 6. Where is the police? (03.50) 7. Bean (04.42) Recorded in Soncino, Italy, on 1 September 1979.
