  1. I can't listen to some music I like with certain people. Some people get caught up in stereotypes and who-should-listen-to-what--strange phenomenon, definitely incongruous to my own listening. It is as if people think that I should listen to music by white people because I am white; or music in English as opposed to Porteuguese or Spanish or French or Japanese; or even that the music should be new, as if it were somehow superior to old music.
  2. I'm a lifelong Laker fan, but I like basketball enough to watch any NBA game on TV. I also grew up playing the game with my brothers and friends, and it really becomes fun when you begin to think the game while you play it. There is no team sport like it to me. I'm a lifelong Raider fan for football, Dodger fan for baseball, but basketball is my sport as far as team competition goes. I'm a UCLA fan for college sports, so there hasn't been much to cheer about for a bit. For individual sports, I skateboard and snowboard. There was actually a decade+ of my life that I spent skateboarding. It becomes something else after that much time--I'm at HOME on that board with wheels. Snowboarding is a similar high--unbelievably fun. :rsmile: :rsmile:
  3. De La Soul "Me Myself & I" NWA "Express Yourself" LL Cool J "Goin' Back To Cali" DNice "25 To Life" Yo! MTV Raps! :rsmile: :rsmile:
  4. I wasn't DEEPly offended, but Jutta's body is barely cold. I don't think they should have censored it, but I know why they did.
  5. No jazz for me either, right now Jazzmoose. I'm bumpin' tonight: Typical Cats Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections The Grouch Crusader For Justice Automator Ready For My Close-Up DJ Krush Code 4109 Talib Kweli Quality The track "Joy" with Mos Def is playing right now--gives me chills it is so good. Speaking of spine-tinglingly good, I just pried Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil out of my player after two days of heavy rotation. What an album! :rsmile:
  6. I went down to my local used vinyl spot and picked up the following: Clifford Brown Paris Collection Vol. 2, sealed $5 Art Farmer Quintet Time & Place, sealed $5 Sonny Rollins Saxophone Colossus, used $4 Shelly Manne Hot Coles, used $4 Keith Jarrett Shades, used $3 Dave Brubeck Time In, used $3 To top it off my initial BMG order just arrived. I have more to listen to than there are hours in the day. :rsmile:

    One Quiet Night

That's a great essay. He seems very reasonable in his opinion. It is disgusting what Kenny G did with that Armstrong track. There've been a lot of good laughs on the board today, this was the best one! I hope the Gorelick himself has read it.
  8. Now that's a criminal cover art switch! I demand justice.
  9. Gosh! I can't imagine a year without seasons! Once it was 100 degrees on Christmas Day. True Story. :rsmile:
  10. JLarsen, Stevie smokes Jamiroquai badly, I'm afraid. Just to clarify. In actuality I have heard people say JKay tries to sound too much like Stevie. The first three Jamiroquais are cool to me, but not equivalent to Stevie's talent/musicianship/prolificity(is that a word?). I really dig Santana Caravanserai, especially the first track.
  11. IMO Jamiroquai, when they had their original bass player, were so much better than their radio singles would suggest. Worth a listen, they had this Stevie Wonder-meets-digeridoos-and-drum-n-bass thing going. Some can't stand JKay's singing, but it never bothered me and I like his lyrics.
  12. There aren't discernable seasons in Los Angeles, so listen to what I feel is appropriate on a day to day basis. :rsmile:
  13. I guess that is a far cry from actually calling them jazz...what exactly is this "jazz high" as implemented here?
  14. In my list, I would say I get a jazzy/ish feel specifically from these tracks: Jimi Hendrix "South Saturn Delta" "Third Stone From The Sun" Pink Floyd "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (edit: now I'm thinking no) WAR "River Niger" Isaac Hayes "Cafe Reggio" Curtis Mayfield "Give Me Your Love"(edit: again, no) James Brown/The JB's "The JB's Monorail" Parliament/Funkadelic "I'll Stay" Jamiroquai "Music Of The Mind" DJ Krush--any instrumental Air--any instrumental
  15. How do I love thee Dusty Groove? Let me count the dollars.
  16. Just ordered the Eddie Gale and the Ronnie Foster. I'm regretting not getting the Alphonse Mouzon and the Grant Green already. I'm sure it will bug me until I go back and do it.
  17. I like Van Morrison, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, and the Dead too. I think these cats sort of give me a similar buzz: Jimi Hendrix Pink Floyd WAR Isaac Hayes Curtis Mayfield James Brown/The JB's Parliament/Funkadelic Jamiroquai (1st 3 albums) DJ Krush Air Speaking of the Dead, ever hear this odd release called GRAYFOLDED from 1995? A cool listen, if you haven't: http://www.accessplace.com/gdtc/1041.htm :rsmile: :rsmile:
  18. I'd try, but I don't have the album. I have Juju and Speak No Evil on order--they'll be my first Shorter-led cds.
  19. Man, I love used vinyl. I spent the weekend listening to lps. They sound so good! Heck yeah, I know a couple good places with dollar and 75 cent bins. Can't beat those prices! Go with a few bucks and leave with hours upon hours of music...
  20. I keep every cd as long as it has one track I like. However, if I hate everything on the disc, I will try to trade it for used vinyl. :rsmile:
  21. No good, eh Chuck? It seems like some of the music I like is really taboo 'round these parts.
  22. I really dig his playing on a few 70s Ramsey Lewis funk-jazz discs. Does anyone have any further recommendations for Mr. Eaton?
  23. Oh, the horror. I could watch a Shania video on mute.
  24. Cool, but do any of these lyrics really compare to, say, "Back Door Santa"? "I ain't like old Saint Nick. He don't come but once a year!" or Esther Phillips' "Brown-Eyed Blues"? "I don't mind if you turn me around, just as long as it gets found!" I love that low-down blues!
  25. Interesting to read that Larry was 6'6". A giant in more ways than one . Must have been something for the homeowner who found a trespassing Larry Young tickling the keys in the living room! Looney toons! (Perhaps he/she wouldn't have called the cops had Larry not been such an imposing figure...) I had never heard of the unfortunate way he died. Has anyone heard any further information/stories on how he came down with that fatal case of pneumonia?
