  1. DISC ONE Track 1: Most likely precedes the era I'm more familiar with. After several listens I started to like this frantic little jammy, but won't venture a guess. Track 2: A sense of urgency throughout holds my interest. I like the trumpet solo the least, but really like the drumming. No clue. Track 3: I love what the vibes bring to this one, real inspired stuff here. I'd buy this. Bags? Track 4: Has a primal drum circle sort of appeal. I found the vocals somewhat annoying, but after repeated listens they seemed to fit. The vocals reminded me of Yusef Lateef or Gary Bartz...? Track 5: The drum solo is intense! RUMBLING! Can't spot drummers at this point. Track 6: DKDC Track 7: Jean-Luc Ponty or Stuff Smith or Stepphane Grappelli? Track 8: DKDC Track 9: Beautiful, strikingly delicate live performance. Haven't the foggiest. Track 10: Another one I'd buy. Great stuff. Track 11: I'm gonna go ahead and guess this one's called "Crucificado," and it's a funky bit of latino con soul. I like it! There is not a chance I'd be able to guess who it is! DISC 2 Track 1: Oh hell yes, I immediately recognize this as a tune I have had on mp3 since the beginning of Napster, but somehow never got an artist or a title to associate it with! It has been sitting in a folder of "unknowns" for a few years now. I must buy this. Track 2: The piano is catchy...I like it. Won't run to the store for it. Don't know who it is. Track 3: Lambert, Hendricks, & Bavan? Heck if I know. Not my bag. Track 4: Y'all done warming up yet? When does the song start? Track 5: Al DiMeola? Track 6: Gotta have this. What is that low droning horn? Baritone sax or a basoon or something? Track 7: Damn, another one perfectly suited to my tastes. Leo Wright or Charles Lloyd...? Track 8: And another heavy hitter! Really dig the percussion. Gato Barbieri? Track 9: A bit erratic and noisy for my tastes, but after several listens I found the intensity appealing, similar to Track 5 of DISC ONE. No guess. Track 10: Otherworldly, has a "drifting through space" vibe to it with those echo effects. Dude, trip out, the colors! No idea. Track 11: A nice straight ahead tune, I get the sense it is a standard I should recognize. Nice closing tune. Not able to come up with names to go with the sounds. Randy Hersom--Thanks again for the great set of music. This one will definitely be sending me on a spending spree--four or five tracks are exactly the kind of jazz I like the most! Now I finally get to read everyone's responses!
  2. Thanks for the info street singer. I need to upgrade in that case.
  3. My Alpine is an older unit, from like 99--for some reason it doesn't read cdrs well. I wonder if newer units are more cdr-friendly. Ironically, burning cdrs for the car was my major motivation for buying a burner.
  4. I couldn't get on from both my work computers all day, but have no problem from home. Made for a productive day of work.
  5. Earl "The Tyler Rose" Campbell, the only living Texas Legend--he's one of my favorite running backs too. I have an incredible highlight reel of some of Earl's best runs and collisions, I love to watch the whole thing in slow motion. I especially love the highlight of him against the Rams, where he plants his helmet in the chest of a defensive back who immediately crumbles, then completes the run by having his jersey get ripped from his shoulder pads by linebackers before going down. Unbelievable strength. Sad to hear about his current condition.
  6. I would like to echo everyone's sentiments in sincerely hoping for the best for you and yours, Rooster Ties.
  7. I found a weird (possibly bootleg) copy of this at my local Virgin, and it was under $10. The sound quality is so-so, but the music is very good. I wonder if it is from these Applause guys you mention, David Ayers. I'll take a look at it when I get home.
  8. Help is on the way--Shaq was back in practice. B)
  9. I really like the Whitestripes, their album ELEPHANT is the best rock album I've heard in a long time. I love that they incorporate blues in their sound, at times they sound very Zeppelin-esque (which, in my book, is a good thing).
  10. I like ROOT DOWN too, however Jim Alfredson does not give it the highest praise...
  11. ...and doesn't give 'em back!

    Night Ranger

Night Ranger epitomizes my eldest brother Tom's favorite music. All 80s metal, all the time at his house! I heard it a whole lot growing up and must admit to liking some of it. I've got another brother who strictly likes 80s alternative. Why they close themselves into that one time frame/one genre is a mystery to me.
  13. I think you just made me one. Looks like a good time!
  14. OK, I just gotta ask--does this ongoing joke originate from when I posted on BNBB about Nora being Ravi's daughter? I have a friend who once played congas for her, and I remember bringing it up since my friend got the gig because his parents are friends with Ravi...
  15. I listen to a large variety of music beyond jazz, so I'm all for it. Come to think of it, the one about THERE'S A RIOT GOING ON may as well have been the inaugural Non-Jazz AOTW thread...
  16. I don't necessarily want to hijack the thread, since I am enjoying this discourse, but... I have INSPIRATION INFORMATION and SHUGGIE'S BOOGIE: SHUGGIE OTIS PLAYS THE BLUES, and both are really good. Have any of you guys heard his other studio albums? How do they measure up to I.I.? Also, did he completely slip under the radar back then? Or were some of you listening to Shuggie concurrently to Sly & Marvin?
  17. I love Sly, he's as funky as it gets! I was just listening to this the other night:
  18. I have been very happy with Collectables reissues of Rahsaan Roland Kirk among others...are there sound quality issues with those? I never heard them in any other incarnation, so I have nothing to compare them to.
  19. Had Photoshop fired up and scanned this old scratchboard of Jimi I did ages ago:
  20. Well, now I've read everyone's responses. I didn't even notice there was no piano. So much for picking up on themes! I'm amazed how quickly folks pick up Max Roach or Elvin Jones, or notice that someone has studied their JJ Johnson but isn't JJ, or gather that a song is from a soundtrack based on an instrument appearing late in the song, or know that something is European...incredible. I really love these discussions--I try to listen with your ears. At this point, I have trouble distinguishing horns from other horns--much less differentiating horn player from horn player.
  21. 1 - A call to arms, where do I march? Nice choice for an intro. 2 - The drummer is killing. Very enjoyable. Looking forward to finding out who this is. 3 - I'd buy this in a heartbeat. 4 - Enthralling song, another I wouldn't hesitate to buy. 5 - Slow and beautiful, I really enjoyed the bass player on this one. 6 - Nice sax/bass/drums trio--so many sounds coming from that drummer, like breathing. 7 - Buddy Rich? Good largish-ensemble work, I dig it. 8 - Another sax/bass/drums trio...slow but adventurous. 9 - Cool! I enjoy the way the sax and drums are working off the bass--at 1:30 this could easily be some hardcore punk or a rugged hip hop beat, it sounds mean! 10 - Now that's a funky ass groove! Reminds me of Marlena Shaw, or (even though I know for sure it isn't) Nina Simone. 11 - Another brief little gem, had the ol' noggin nodding. 12 - I think I recognize the tune, but nothing is coming to me. I seem to be noticing a pattern in the choice of bass and drums in every song on this BFT--perhaps COUW's theme lies therein? 13 - Mellow, reminds me of Lonnie Liston Smith or Pharoah Sanders. 14 - Another tune I think I've heard somewhere, perhaps in an old movie. Subtle, melancholy little melody. 15 - Solo sax, continues that melancholy vibe to the close--great way to end a great cd. Wow, incredible disc COUW, thanks. I can't wait to read the other responses. Sorry it took me so long to respond, I've had a busy week. Thanks again to Jim Dye for the distribution.

    Pat Martino

Another big for Pat and albums such as CONSCIOUSNESS, WE'LL BE TOGETHER AGAIN, and FOOTPRINTS. Martino does a long, smokin' version of the pop tune "Sunny" on the album LIVE! which I got as a twofer with CONSCIOUSNESS (renamed "HEAD & HEART" by the folks at 32Jazz). The highlight of this twofer is the funky yet dark and smoky "Willow." B)
  23. Cool man! B) It must be satisfying to see your design realized in three dimensions. I was in the illustration department at my school, but if I'd had my way I would have been in every department. Product design always looked fun to me, but my focus was traditional painting.
  24. Nice sketches, are they yours? Indulge the bandwidth and post images all day, MWTGA!
