I think I'll take your advice, Soul Stream and Vibes. You've both got me curious about Attica Blues. I'll try to pick it up today.

Lane: Sorry Johnny, I don't have a dime. Johnny: Didn't ask for a dime. Two dollars. Lane: My mom's not home. She had to take my brother to the hospital. My grandma dropped acid this morning, and she was really stressed out. She hijacked a busload full of... penguins. It's sort of a family crisis. Bye!

Howdy all, I know we're here because we love jazz. I also love different music genres too (jazz first, though). I think it would great to have a Music: Non-jazz forum. I know that we have the misc. non politics forum, but I would love to see all the the non-jazz musical discussions in one place. It might also encourage us to talk more about other music that we love. :rsmile: :rsmile:

The very first electric guitar pickup was the Rickenbacker Horseshow pickup back in 1929. Maybe the cover was in response to the look of that pickup. The Rickenbacker pickup wrapped around the strings, making it look like it had a cover. Rickenbacker basses today have a cover over the pickup that emulates this look. They also have a built-in mute on the bridge itself. In the 50's, Fender put covers over the bridge and pickup of Telecasters. They also put a cover over the bridge of the Stratocaster. They did it with both the P-bass and the Jazz basses. My guess is that they did it to make the instrument look cleaner and more stylish. More space-age. :rsmile:

Congratulations! That looks like a great dog. -
Make it stop! For the love of God, please make it stop!

I'm waiting to see what happens when you hit 200 posts. Maybe Groover Extraordinaire :rsmile:

Those Savoy covers are horrible! They look like they were done by a little kid. Reminds of a website with kids art. Here's the link: Crappy Kid's Art

Nice work, DoubleM! Catesta, I like Lester's pork pie hat.

I think you'll really like the set, Wes. When the Gerald Wilson cd "Portraits" came out in the Collector's Choice series, I held off picking it up. I had picked up the rest of the CC reissues when I finally got "Portraits" - It turned out to be one of my favorites. After that I picked up Wilson's 1998 "Theme for Monterey" cd. I couldn't believe that his music was still excellent. I recommend this album. It's on the MAMA label. Needless to say, I picked up the Mosaic set as soon as it was released. I don't love everything on it, but overall, it's really good.

Thanks for the warnings! I've never returned a cd to a store because I didn't like it. I have wished I could, but I worked in too many record stores when I was younger to do a thing like that. I hated when people would bring a cd back and I couldn't accept it as a return (the guy I worked for was a real a-hole and he was adament about not accept returned cds). I did bend and let some people exchange cds. We had a policy that if it played on the store cd player than we couldn't take it back. I have to admit that I did put cds into the player that worked fine, but with a little creative button maneuvering. The cds sounded like they skipped.

I'm a Zappa fan too. I prefer his earlier albums to his later ones. I appreciated the virtuosity of the musicians on his later albums, but the songs themselves didn't do as much for me. I also like his classical output. I would recommend the Yellow Shark also. The synclavier stuff isn't really my cup of tea. I appreciate what he's trying to do, but it doesn't grab me. My favorites albums of his are Absolutely Free, Hot Rats, and Just Another Band from L.A. (I love the song "Billy the Mountain"). I have many of his later albums and I've tried to get into them, but I haven't been able to yet.

What Happened To The Jazz Corner Speakeasy Today?
AfricaBrass replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've lurked on the jazzcorner board for years. I think I posted a couple of times. I guess I was intimidated by that board. The water was a little warmer at the BNBB, so I jumped in that pool. I've really enjoyed checking out the different boards since the demise of the BNBB. This board is my favorite, but it's such a personal preference kind of thing. I just wanted to reply to your comment about your Grimes thread. I understand the frustration of not getting the response that the thread deserves. Heck, I think I'm the biggest thread killer around here. -
What Happened To The Jazz Corner Speakeasy Today?
AfricaBrass replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
GOM, I didn't comment on it, because I didn't really have much to add, but I was happy when I saw your post about Henry Grimes. It's an amazing story. I've followed the story from the BNBB. I really wish I could see the show. Please don't think that we lack interest in this. -
Hey, this is a family board!! Oof! Maybe I should read my posts before I post them.

I think they give you 5 free if you get a friend to sign up. You can do it from their website. I just did it with my wife. I can't afford cds either.

That is one CRAZY effects setup. I want to know how you take that thing to a gig. I think I'd go see a show just to see that thing in action. Some people have too much time on their hands.

Grachan Moncur Mosaic Select box
AfricaBrass replied to wesbed's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Thanks for your comments, Claude. I think I'll hold off on the Moncur set. I'll just transfer my Jacknife material to a cd from vinyl. I'm tired of buying stuff over-and-over again, anyway. Thanks for the thread, Wes. -
I rarely buy a cd that I'm really unhappy with, but one of the dangers of being open to new things is the occasional DUD. I hate the feeling when I spend $16 on a cd that is just plain crap. I did this recently. The cd was John Zorn's "Songs From the Hermetic Theatre" I knew before I bought it that it was one of his composer series issues. That's cool, I like classical music. I even like a lot of 20th experimental stuff and some experimental Industrial music. I'm pretty open-minded. Heck, I already have over 20 of Zorn's cds. I appreciate much of what he's doing, but this cd is terrible. It's like amateur attempts at experimental music. I could describe the cd track by track, but then I'd have to listen to it again. I forced myself to listen to it 3 times already and I hated it more with each listen. I got madder and madder at myself for buying this instead of something else. I keep thinking of all the good cds I passed up. Do any of you have any similar cds that you'd like to warn us about?

Do the blues mean alot to you?
AfricaBrass replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous Music
If blues is being pushed aside, I wonder how much the future jazz musicians will be influenced by today's music. When it comes to today's popular music, I'm pretty much cut off from it. I try to be open to different types of music, but they don't all grab me. Especially Rap and Hip-hop. I know that there have been attempts to bridge them with jazz, but what about 20 years from now? Will they be a common element of jazz. I see a move away from the blues in multiple genres of music, especially rock. As a guitar player, I have been very influenced by the blues. But a lot of the newer rock music doesn't seem to have any of the feel of the blues. Maybe that's why it sounds so generic to me. It just doesn't grab me. I hope the same doesn't happen to jazz. I think I know how the moldy figs felt when bop came on the scene. -
John Patton Mosaic Select: What's in, What's Out?
AfricaBrass replied to Matthew's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm on the fence about the Moncur set. I've got everything that has been out on cd already and I have the unreleased material on vinyl. On the old board, a few people brought up issues with the sound of the Moncur set. Any comments/suggestions? Should I hold off? I agree with B3-er. I would love to see a larger Patton set. -
I agree with Wesbed, Rick. Welcome to the forum!

I've had to cut back drastically on my jazz spending during the last couple of years. I have tons of jazz cds that I have never given the proper time to digesting, so this isn't really a bad thing for me. When I cut back, I went from being a collector to a listener in most cases. I decided I would only try to be a completist with cds released by Blue Note and the labels under it's umbrella. I think I have purchased 95% of everything they have put out in the last 15 years, so I didn't want to stop. I was pissed at Verve, so I didn't feel too bad about not buying their stuff and since I had emusic, the OJCs had lost some of their allure, since they were so readily available. I still bought some stuff on other labels and some newer artists. What BN did for me with their actions was to set me free. I don't feel the desire to pick up all their releases. I'll probably stick with the BN reissues, but I don't have to have all the Roulette and Capital Jazz releases anymore. I think I have enough. For the newer BN releases, if I really want them, I'll get them used or from the record club. I'm enjoying this freedom. I've been buying cds from labels that I hadn't supported in a long time and I'm glad I am.

I need more John Hicks (recommendations)...
AfricaBrass replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
It's amazing about some of the guys that fly under the radar. I only became aware of Hicks through an interview with him in Cadence in the mid-nineties. I picked up a couple of his cds that had been reissued on Evidence. They're were pretty good. His recent recordings on the High Note label have been getting good reviews. I don't mean to sound like a shill for emusic.com, but I believe they have some of his recent albums available for download. It's a pretty good deal for $10/month, but the mp3 quality isn't always that great (especially with some of the Fantasy records stuff). I'm also a big fan of the Strata East label. My favorite Strata East release is Pharoah Sanders' Izipho Zam. I also like the Charles Tolliver stuff. I search forever to find the two Strata East cds that I have of his, Live in Tokyo and Impact. I too look forward to any suggestions for Hicks' music.
