PLEASE HELP ME FIGURE OUT...

I like that old cartoon with Owl Jolson. You know, the one where he wanted to be a crooner, but his father and brothers were all classical singers. I love to singa... About the moona and juna and springa... -
Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
This is a nice date. I've never been a big fan of the song "Witchcraft", but when they get past the theme and open up it's really nice. I have been enjoying Rouse's contribution. I can see why some might not like Adams, but I like the interplay and colors that this combination brings. Back to listening. :rsmile: -
One more thing. I've mentioned this before, but if you have a high speed connection, there is a program called Furthurnet. It's a free peer-to-peer filing sharing software. They only trade live shows of bands or artists who approve of file sharing. I'm mentioning this right now because there are 3 live Charlie Hunter shows up there right now. They have some other jazz, but it's usually the MMW type of stuff. Furthurnet Website

I dig hunter too. I'll be picking up his new cd. BN seems to have their heads up their.... I wish I could do what he does on guitar. I don't know if he still has his website, but he used to have downloadable mp3s on it. He had 3 cds worth. Good stuff!

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - Pig Lib
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I picked up the reissue a few months ago. It's a nice package. Truth be told, I never owned the cd until this version so I don't know if the remastering is an improvement or not. I think my favorite Pavement album is Brighten the Corners. Maybe it's the fact that parts of it remind me of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd. I've been listening to Pig Lib for a couple days and I like it more and more. I hate to admit it, but I'm enjoying this more than Pavement. I was never a fan of Spiral Stairs' songs, so I don't have to skip over them. I'm also impressed by the guitar work on this new album. There are places where they get into the realm of Captain Beefheart with their playing. I've been listening to 1% of One over and over. I also like the song Animal Midnight. It's nice to see Malkmus going to a different place than Pavement. As to Saint Vitus' question: I have no idea, but I haven't read anything or seen anything to make me think that this is the same fellow. Just a guess. :rsmile: -
Welcome Nutty! Don't just lurk, join in on the fun!

I saw "Where the Buffalo Roam" when I was a kid. I loved Bill Murray on SNL. I remember being really confused. Later, after reading Thompson's works and having made a few trips to Vegas "Fear and Loathing" style, if get my drift. It made sense. I tried to watch the Terry Gilliam "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" film with my wife. If I had a nickel for everytime she said, "This movie is stupid" during it, I would have a Mosaic set on the way. After an hour of her complaining I gave up. They did a good job capturing the high as a kite Vegas experience. Ah, the folly of youth.

Enter the Time Machine...

Great topic! I would love to have been at: Armstrong's Hot Fives session(s) Minton's Playhouse during the birth of bop. Eddie Condon's Town Hall Concerts in the 40's Coltrane's Ascension studio session (The OM session would be good too) I'll force myself to stop, I could list at least 100 things. -
Good point. I really didn't like it on my first listen, but it has really grown on me. I still haven't read the liner notes. :rsmile:

I'm looking at the DVD package right now. It says it is VHS hi-fi, newly remastered in full frame format and it contains 8 minutes of rare trailers. I've watched the trailers and I understand why people were confused. I don't think the makers of the movie wanted it to be a success. It is nice with the DVD because of the ease of skipping around to the different sections. With one click, no more Davey Jones singing and dancing. That is worth the price of admission alone.

Right On! I love that movie. It was one of the first DVDs I bought. I had previously owned it in the beta and VHS formats.

Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
Thanks for your enthusiasm Big Al! Your review is making me want to listen to it right now. I'm kicking myself because I just realized that my copy is in a box somewhere (I just moved). I thought I had unpacked it already. Aaaargh! (It will just give me some time to listen to that freaky Attica Blues instead). I hope to have my copy unpacked tomorrow. Jazzmoose already picked the next album for review. It will be Wayne Shorter's All Seeing Eye. Check the album review thread for details. Album review thread :rsmile: :rsmile: -
Speaking of Zappa and the Monkees. I love the Monkee's movie "Head" - There is a scene in the movie that takes place between Zappa and Davey Jones (It takes place after a deluxe Davey Jones song and dance sequence). It's one of the best scenes in the movie to me. Frank: That song was pretty white. Davy: Yeah, well, so am I, what can I tell ya. Frank: You've been working on your dancing though. Davy: Oh, yeah...glad you noticed it. Frank: It doesn't leave much time for your music. You should spend more time on it because the youth of America depends on you to show the way. Davy: Yeah? Frank: Yeah.

Oof! I forgot about not posting after scottb. Nice work on acquiring the Byrd cd. I've pulled that move a few times myself. It sure is a lot more expensive than just buying the cd itself, but a man has got to do what a man has go to do.

I picked up the Shepp this evening. I've listened to about 2/3 of it. It's definitely not Fire Music. I've heard songs that reminded me of the Temptations (Papa Was a Rolling Stone era) mixed with some Curtis Mayfield. The second track reminded me of Scott Walker of all people. The strings on Steam kind of reminded me of Charles Ives. Verrrrrry Interesting. It's actually quite surreal. I don't know if that was a regular cigarette being smoked on the cover. I realize it was a serious piece of work, so I don't mean to insult it, but it isn't your average jazz fare. I enjoyed what I heard so far. I'll post my opinion after I've listened to it a couple of times.

I feel your pain, I know how it is to kill threads. :rsmile: It was done for a month or so on the BNBB a few years ago. I learned a lot about what people listen for. I think this will help me grow in my listening maturity. It's going to be tricky picking cds that most people have, but i'm open to trying new albums. I figure I can afford 1 cd a week. I agree - box sets are out. I'm looking forward to really digging into the Donald Byrd.
-
I picked up some Nonesuch Explorer cds about 10 years ago. One of them was Iranian classical music. It was good.

That sounds great! I wish I could play pedal steel. There's so many possibilities with that one. One thing I'd like to check out is the sacred steel movement. I've read about these guys, but I haven't heard them.

Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
I've had this cd for years and I've only listened a couple times to it. I'm looking forward to digging into it this coming week. :rsmile: -
I'm getting used to the crazy sounds my son makes. I'm going to give the Shepp a try. I'll report back this weekend.

Here's a link to a webpage about the oud Oud page I'm wondering if you're looking for music of the bouzouki. The bouzouki is a greek instrument. The oud is a middle eastern lute type instrument. I've also seen it spelled as ud. I have a few records at home that feature these instruments. I found them inexpensively in used record stores. I prefer the oud to the bouzouki. Whenever I hear bouzouki music, I think of Zorba the Greek. Good luck.

Thanks Mark! :rsmile:
