the "I'm Getting Old and I Can't Find My Teeth"
papsrus replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
... extenuating circumstances sometimes override the calendar ... I was going to say I play tennis (I did say it ... damn), but then realized, so does almost every other 50-something creature within a 100-mile radius. ... hang on, something youthful will occur to me ... -

I know. The guy rubs me the wrong way, what can I say? I ignore his posts most of the time, but when he makes up a big part of a thread (like this one) I just can't look away. It's like a car wreck on the side of the road. His annoying hipster "look-at-me-I'm-so-cool-because-listen-to-XYZ" schtick pisses me off. Can't explain why. Try reading only every third word. It makes equally as much sense and you can skip the faux-edginess (which I personally have come to enjoy, actually). (signed, old enough to know better) ... carry on! -

Is it possible to flip this around and talk about which living musicians/bands/carnival acts some of the more critically inclined/aged/jaded here find inspiring/rewarding/9 - 9.5 or higher on the edc 10-point rating system? I'm not too concerned with Jazz Giants in the making (or record companies' promotional efforts). But rather the music. And I'm taking notes. (seriously ... Empty Cage Quartet). Bill Barton put together a list here (off the top of his head I'm sure ... hope you don't mind me cribbin' it Bill) of musicians he feels are making some worthwhile music today. They're all alive, so far as I can tell. Worth at least some attention. A few others have been mentioned in passing here. I'd toss Matana Roberts into the mix (for the sake of argument, I guess). ... anyone with a half-full glass, feel free. -
What radio are you listening to right now?
papsrus replied to BillF's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Yes. I like the Rich Conaty's chummy enthusiasm, too. Nice. Very clear sound quality on almost all of this. I'll be making this a regular Sunday night stop. Thanks again for this one. -

Fantastic. Thanks for the link! -
My Midwest bracket's blown -- had Georgetown vs. Vandy Still looking good in the East, with Tennessee and UNC. As long as Texas and UCLA (gulp) keep winning, the other side of the bracket should be OK. Stanford is looking pretty solid though and could give Texas trouble. ... Lots 'o' trouble. Davidson ... wow!

Calling All Canadians! (..or Canadian wannabes)
papsrus replied to Son-of-a-Weizen's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Both pretty good music towns, I think. When are you planning to go? Montreal jazz fest in late June. I'm guessing Montreal is a little more romantic, if that's what you're aiming for. ... I was there in 1967. Don't remember much, as I was 10. ... I'll withhold my vote until some Canadians weigh in. -

Don't know his work thoroughly, but Redman's fine, when the mood strikes. Back East is solid. SF Jazz Collective, too. (I think clementine should be put in charge of the entire Internet beginning today. We could see how it goes over the next couple of weeks, but I for one would have high hopes) ... -
I'd like to point out the fallacy of presumption inherent in this ideologically-driven line of argument . The assumption that avoidance of regulatory controls causes recklessly greedy behavior or results in greater excesses than laissez-faire policies is absurd . Obviously the causation runs the other way , as regulatory controls are the result of , not the cause of , such excesses . The fact that people will find ways around laws is no reason not to have laws except in those cases where non-compliance is so widespread that enforcement costs outweigh the social utility of the law . Needless to say , the presumption that financial regulations are of this type is purely ideological rather than empirically grounded . Indeed. This seems rather fundamental. Your last sentence drives the point home nicely for me. Thanks for bringing this up.

Yes, that sounds like waaaay too much for some dental cleaning .. even extractions. Get a second opinion.

More Blue Lake tonight with Fred Anderson. -
Entering the evening games Friday, I'm perfect in the East, have two losses in the Midwest (USC%&*@), just one in the South, but my West bracket is a pretty shaky with three opening-round losses. Still have UCLA and Duke playing the final game in that bracket, with UCLA emerging. ... Overall, a not too bad start, considering some of the upsets (WKU and San Diego???).

Thanks for the review. Sounds like a good time was had by all. I would think the Joni stuff would have more appeal to folks interested in contemporary music than the Headhunters stuff, but. ... I'll check it out April 1. Thanks again. -

Tuning in again tonight after work. I think there's some Organissimo coming up (I was concentrating on reading and just heard "Organissimo," but missed if it was upcoming or recently played.) ... Enjoy your time in Florida Lazaro. Send up a flare if you're passing through Sarasota. -
Just stopped by my neighborhood Borders this morning (despite a self-imposed moratorium on buying) and the jazz section was completely gutted. A couple of shelves of basically mainstream stuff, some compilations, that's it.

Can't Grasp Credit Crisis? Join the Club
papsrus replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thank you Chas and sidewinder. I think I've got it now. I'm was quoted a 6.25 percent 30-year fixed rate about two weeks ago (with 20 percent down). I'm hoping that will edge down slightly over the next 30 days or so. We'll see. EDIT: Locked in at 5 7/8 about an hour ago. Things move fast. -

Can't Grasp Credit Crisis? Join the Club
papsrus replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Nice article. It doesn't say so explicitly (at least, I don't think it does) but there is a disconnect between the Fed's actions to cut interest rates and the 30 year fixed mortgage rates. This disconnect has to do with the supply of money, or credit, as I understand it. More conservative lending means the 30 year mortgage rates don't fall as the Fed rate falls, as I understand it. In fact, those mortgage rates have risen noticeably over the past month or so, and are more or less holding steady now. Is this a correct approximation of things Guy? (or anyone who might understand this better than I do).
