surreal deal ...
Little High People replied to Little High People's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
i really don't get it myself ... those items i bought were already down to $5.99 and i got a 20% discount. everything was 20-40% off. the guy said they would be closed by december. i am going out of the country for a week next week, am back in the u.s. the following week and then gone again 11/23 - 1/11. i might miss out on some good stuff when it gets cheaper, but maybe not. the only other things that caught my eye were some of the new dylan reissues at the rediculously high price of $19.99, albiet 20% off ... if some of them would just be around (and if i would just be around) when it gets to 80-90% off .... oh, well, can't complain i guess! -
the sam goody nearest me is going out of business. i went in there today and found a couple of (i think, anyway) incredible deals. i picked up "the complete stax/volt singles 1959-1968" (9 cds + book) for ... wait for it ... $3.81!!! picked up 2 copies, one for me, one for a friend! plus, for the same price i picked up miles' "complete silent way sessions" (for a friend for xmas), AND a sony 3 pak of johnny cash albums ("san quentin," "folsom prison," "america") for myself. not a bad day, methinks!

Little High People replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Re-issues
missed out on the cherry mosaic ... so a conn. of "where is brooklyn?" and an rvg of "symphony for improvisers" would be most welcome! -
best Zappa tunes to play in jazz contexts

i know the album orders (especially the 70's posthumous releases) are a hodge podge, but i was wanting to hear them that way to maybe gain a different perspective on the work. i sat down the other nite and listened straight thru, on headphones to disc 2 of the "legacy" box set that impulse! put out last year. it was nice to hear tunes from different sessions (and different periods, even) in one sitting. i wouldn't trade my classic quartet, heavyweight champion, or village vanguard boxes for the world, but sometimes a full disc of one session or one era gets a little tedious. what versions of favorite things and i want to talk about you are on selflessness? thanks again, guys, for all the info!
-
thanks! does anyone know what was on "selflessness?" i heard it was a live recording of "favorite things." has that track (or whatever else was on there) been reissued?

i'm geeking out and putting together cd-r's of albums from my box sets (miles, trane, ornette) ... many of these i've never heard in their original running order. i can get the miles info online at losin's site, but does anyone know the original LP sequences (with side breaks) to the following coltrane LP's? Africa/Brass Live at the Village Vanguard Impressions Selflessness Transition Sun Ship Infinity The Africa Brass Sessions, Vol. 2 Feelin' Good To the Beat of a Different Drummer Jupiter Variation Trane's Modes thanks

i've always, as long as i can remember, been into music. mainly rock, but as i got older, all kinds. the first big thing for me, as a toddler, was KISS!! hell yeah!! still a big kiss fan to this day ... being a little kid, i was of course, attracted to the look, but i really liked the music as well ... and re-discovered my love for it in a big way a couple of years ago .... after that, i just remember listening to top 40 radio all the time. the next big thing was the beatles when i was in middle school ... that was around the same time i started playing the drums in band in school. beatles naturally progressed to led zeppelin (still my fave rock band, and probably my fave band, PERIOD) and all the major classic rock acts. by junior high i was in the school jazz band ... i think that was my real exposure to the music. my first jazz album was a cassette (all we played back then!) of columbia's first volume of it's sampler series for their mid 80's reissue campaign. "so what" was the first track. even that early i knew i was listening to something special. i got into it more later in high school (parallel to really getting obsessive about frank zappa!) ... and then in a big way in college as i was playing in the college jazz band and exposed to "real" jazz musicians for the first time. great days of listening hangs and jamming and the like. being a fan of all music, i really can't say that i like jazz over any other genre. it's just one of the many that i dig ... but i do listen to it, along with rock, way more than other things ..... except maybe KISS!!!! ( ) ... (just kidding!!)

Looking for 2 Miles Davis singles (!)
Little High People replied to dave9199's topic in Offering and Looking For...
a couple of quotes from the liner notes to the current "on the corner" cd (2000). "Originally released on a 45-rpm single called "The Molester" (Co 4-45709), "Black Satin" was obviously influenced by Buckmaster ..." "Teo would change the shape of the music with simple things ... creating a 45-rpm single that was edited from the master differently from the LP." so ... i'm guessing molester is an alt mix/edit of black satin .... would still like to know what the other 2 tunes are ... columbia has recently started a service called custom mix cd. currently only two artists have material available, bob dyaln and train (some current rock band i know nothing about). for the dylan stuff they offer a wide selection of album tracks and 12 rarities (mostly euro single b-sides, but some b-sides from old 45's that have not been issued on cd as far as i know). the deal is you can pick 12 tunes or 78 minutes of music (whichever happens first), pick an album cover, and they make the cd and send it to you for 15.99 plus s & h. this could be a way for columbia to get those single tracks out -- make a miles davis custom mix cd available and offer those singles as "rarities." until then, how the hell can i get my hands on these tracks???? -
i haven't really checked out much 80's stuff save for "aura" (which is great) ... but it think the reason that most of his 80's stuff falls flat for a lot of people is because ... how could he possibly follow the type of music he was making at the time of his retirement? some of the most progressive sounds i have ever heard ... where could one go after "pangaea" "agharta?"

yeah, i love lee, but only have 3 discs ... the two trio dates with mehldau and haden and the new duet album with matt wilson. i saw him in '98 at the north sea jazz festival in a trio setting with haden and paul bley. i think a lot of it went over my head at the time, but i still remember really enjoying it. for the first number he came out by himself and just played ... absoulutely beautiful stuff. thanks everyone for the recommendations ... i shall have to pick this up, but in a little while as bread is tight. i saw the 3cd version for sale used on amazon for 89 bucks and some change. yikes!!! is elvin the only drummer or are there other guys on it?
-
anyone have anything to say about lee konitz' "motion?" that's the one with elvin, right? ... i saw this one in the shops a while back and was intrigued but didn't pick it up ... yet ...

yeah, those outtakes of sun ship really need to come out. does anyone know what impulse's next coltrane release might be? we certainly got a ton of stuff last year ...

other people have said it here and elswhere, but i'll say it again ... apple should re-do the beatles catalog (and all future beatles releases) as hybrid sacd's. period. just look at the great work that has been done thus far with the stones and dylan ... they would be crazy not to. it's not like they wouldn't sell ... they should keep the original catalog together (including past masters one and two), but, where space allows, put the stereo and mono mixes on single discs. no bonus tracks unless previously unreleased. white album would have to be 4 discs to include both mixes. and remaster the records from the original masters ... no remixing!! the yellow submarine songtrack was great but the same approach should not be applied to the entire catalog. also, live at the hollywood bowl should (finally) be issued on cd, along with the promo comp. of christmas fan club discs. has anyone here actually heard the mono sgt. pepper? it is quite different and worth a listen. what i wanna hear is the mono white album ... the two tracks from rarities (1980) (helter skelter and don't pass me by) were like nite and day campared to the stereo ... finally, the hybrids can have 5.1 mixes as long as they have stereo sacd mixes as well.
-
hey, if they can do 2 miles boxes this year, they surely can do 2 next year ... right? i mean, columbia is known for strictly adhering to their release schedules ... seriously, though ... they could push back seven steps to berlin another year if it meant getting this out as soon as possible!!!!! by the way ... where do all you guys get yr. promo discs and such. i live in a "socially retarded area" and find these things difficult to come by ... they probably show up on ebay, right ...?

i just recieved a cd from europe in the mail as a gift ("good juice," a blue note comp. of organ stuff). it says it is copy protected. unfortunately the info on the back cover regarding the copy protection is in french. i want to rip this disc to mp3 format. will i be able to, or is there something i need to do to get around it? does anyone know if the copy protection BN uses in europe messes with the audio quality? thank you for your help.

does anyone know anything about a 12" being put out of "sugar ray" b/w "little high people?" i have seen scans on someone's web site of the record label (one of those great photos of miles in the ring at the gym). any place to order this online? local vinyl shop has no idea of it's existence. i think i heard that it's clear vinyl, too ...

Complete Jack Johnson Sessions?
Little High People replied to Tjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Been an avid collector of the sony miles reissues since they started in the mid 90's. have nearly every box and essential album that's come out. just got the jack johnson set. i was looking forward to this one for a long time. i wasn't disappointed, but for some reason it seemed a slight letdown. probably because of the excess of multiple takes (even though some are different sections of the same tune). the best parts, i thought, were the completetly unreleased tracks (like sugar ray and ali). i thought they would be throwaways, but they are actually quite good. and it is great to have two unedited takes of honky tonk. that track always kills me! i have managed thus far to miss the blackhawk reissue. i heard one of the old cd's about a year ago and thought it was great. how does the rest of the set measure up?
