Whatever spelling is used, I'm glad there is a party in your house, because there's none in mine! I never paid attention to the track difference when I upgraded and I'm still missing those extra tracks!!

Picked up Here to Stay, Happenings, and Off to the Races.
I A/B'd my Happenings BN Works TOCJ with the RVG. I've never bothered upgrading any of my imports to RVG masterings, but I thought I'd try this one. I think I like the Japanese import better. To my ears, the TOCJ has better stereo separation. I'll have tocheck it out once more before I decide which copy to dump.

As an employee of Geico's #1 competitor in New York, I despise these commercials, and anyone who buys insurance from them because of a charismatic lizard DESERVES what is in store for them.
But as a TV watcher, I LOVE their commercials!! They're very well done and my company could really take a hint here...

Borders in Poughkeepsie - NOTHING; Albany and Danbury had one copy of each new RVG each, I think
Tower in Nanuet, NY - NOTHING (which sucks, because BN titles are 20% off right now)

I live in the Catskills, and never even try such chain stores. But Rhino Records in New Paltz (maybe there's a branch in Poughkeepsie, but I've never been), seems to be run by somewhat of a jazz fan, and occasionally stocks newish RVGs. Once in a while, interesting used discs show up, though their pricing can be off (eg, they tend to charge the "full used price" for old OJCs, even if newer K2s and/or RVGs have been released). But the flip side is the occasional OOP find (eg I got Ike Quebec's "Easy Living" there). They also have a lot of good titles on vinyl, but I can't speak for the prices, not being an LP collector. Not sure if it'd be worth the drive for you, but worth a stop if you happen to be in NP.
Thanks! I'm quite familiar with Rhino, and I usually find excellent stuff there. They closed down the Albany Rhino about 10 years ago, and closed the Poughkeepsie location maybe 8 years ago? The New Paltz location is all that's left.
It's a shame. One can obtain just about any title on-line these days. Record store shopping offers threadbare stock and fewer and fewer surprises, which is something I miss quite a lot.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Floyd as a kid. My father used to service the oil burners in Floyd's house, guesthouse, and gym, and Dad took me with him on a few of those occasions to watch (we lived in the same town as Floyd, New Paltz, NY).
One time his wife made me breakfast and then asked if I'd like to see some stuff in the basement. I was probably only 7 or 8 years old, so I didn't understand how world famous Floyd was, or that many people would give a lot to hear his stories or see the old gloves, robes, sports mags and newpapers Floyd showed me. To me, he was just a really nice man who owned the house my father was working in for the day. It was really only later that my Dad told me he was a superstar in the sports world!
Rest in peace, Floyd, and thanks for making me feel at home.

Sad, sad news. I've been inspired by Jackie in so many ways---from late night listening through to copping some of his solos when my guitar playing needed a lift. Jackie will always be a great teacher. His recorded work still offers many rewards for the listener and for the student.
RIP, Jackie.

Do not ignore Infinity.
I'd love to not ignore Infinity, but as far as I know, it's only available as an expensive import.
Maybe it too will be a Conn or RVG, sooner or later??
Infinity was available as a Connoisseur in 1998 . It does make an excellent companion to Jackie Mclean's Consequence as well .
The 1990 CD of Tom Cat has the cover from the Japanese lp reissue I believe . Does the new RVG have any photos from the session ?
I'm curious to know how the new Tom Cat compares sonically to the first CD issue .
I picked up Tom Cat yesterday and I'm a bit disappointed with the sound. In comparison with the earlier CD issue, the instruments seem a little more clear on the RVG, but there is no warmth at all, nor is there any stereo seperation amongst the horns. Maybe it's my equipment, though I don't think so.

I'd like to see Sam Rivers' A New Conception as a reissue. Might be nice while he's still alive, so that he could possibly reap a little cash from the release of another title. I LOVE the version of "That's All" from that session. Even though I have the Mosaic, it would be nice to have the individual cd.

Hey, no worries! I like Rava and I thought it was kinda cool that I stumbled on the 80 Mondi album in a used store.
I need to burn it to cd and check it out for a day or two. At $3.50, it was a non-threatening purchase! I also found copies of Andersen's Shimri and Bobo Stenson's Underwear at next to nothing!

ok so i just got ino the mail "il giro del giorno in 80 mondi" by enrico rava.
it's on black saint but i guess it is a reissue of the album and it was originally on a smaller label and came out in 1972.
I found a vinyl copy just this past weekend and also picked it up!
I think the production suffers a bit. Sounds like it was recorded in a cave. At 1st listen, the playing is good, but I haven't have time to dig into it too deeply. I believe this was Rava's 1st date as a leader. My copy says marcello melis on FENDERBASS (thought that was cute).
akanalog, do you have Rava's latter ECM release called "Opening Night"? I'm curious to hear it, or any comments on it.

The biggest find for me this year was Kevin O'Neil. His guitar work with Anthony Braxton was quite a pleasant surprise. Also really like his solo album "Sous Rature"
Same here. O'Neill is pretty terrifying technically, and always seems to have fresh ideas.

but yes also in general i would say i am very against compilations of any kind.
personally it seems like a better way to get to know an artist is through their albums.
listening to their hits or a small selection of stuff that might span 20 years gives a more cloudy picture in my mind.
and once one gets to know an artist, the compilation discs will be worthless anyway if the listener buys more albums.
and if one gets a compilation and doesn't like it, the same money would be wasted as buying one album by the artists and not liking it.

Even though I will not be purchasing the Christensen Rarum, I did purchase the Stanko Rarum for the same reasons Aggie mentioned. Never inspired me to pick up any beyond Balladyna, though.
Back to Christensen...I REALLY dig his playing on Garbarek's SART, especially the snare work on Fountain of Tears. That whole track is percussively fantastic, though sometimes it's difficult to tell if some of the sounds are being made by Christensen, or if it's Rypdal just being weird--all of it is okay by me.

a word for jon christensen who sounds great on "pilgrim" and "plot". what an underappreciated drummer. he makes so many ECM albums, in my opinion.
Agreed. Which is probably why he received his own entry in the Rarum series, although I don't believe he recorded any sessions as a leader. I've had his Rarum disc in my hands a few times, but never purchased it, as I have most of the tracks on their original releases.
