Preparing for exile in what could be a hostile land
wordsandsounds replied to pollock's topic in Forums Discussion
Well, it's true. Wordsandsounds, I see that you're from Carrboro, NC. I grew up in Chapel Hill. Lived in Carrboro for a spell. In Orlando for the time being right now actually, guess I should update that... I loved the area though. -
Rock vs. Jazz
wordsandsounds replied to papsrus's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Askew from this, but related... I thought this Ben Ratliff piece is spot on concerning both Hancock and Getz and their grammy winning albums based on other's music... Article here via NYTimes. -
Preparing for exile in what could be a hostile land
wordsandsounds replied to pollock's topic in Forums Discussion
Welcome here. You may just find it a bit of a relief. Here's what someone posted at that other place recently: I think these sorts of forums have as many defintions as there are people using them. [...] What's really ironic is that this person is posting here now.... -
I didn't know him very well, but I miss him as well. He was a very zen like influence. BlueNote82 (among a couple of others) hightened tensions to an unnerving degree so everyone reads posts in a more aggressive manner and hence everyone is on everyone else a lot quicker. Hence the tenor of the board many have referenced. The duct tape comment was out of line imo, and to be qouted by the mods with a "yeah that" wasn't a good move. However, seeline, you also know where I stand concerning coming back and trudging things up (albeit usually in defense) rather than just letting the thing die for another day. But that being said, two perosnalities, two ways of handling an issue. Neither are wrong or right per se. Personally I am simply trying to mend things and highlight the issues while avoiding an argument that won't have a satisfacory conclusion for either party. I'm seeing if I can salvage the board that has been my home, but I am finding Org to be a good surrogate even if I do serve more as a lurker than anything else. Now if I can only get a legend map for user names between the two... And thanks for having me.

Mike does his best, seriously. Check this.

Didn't even notice the date...

My wife and I moved from Chapel Hill NC to Orlando FL using Allied for a bundle of money. I have no complaints whatsoever. The local agent came to our home and guesstimated a weight (which was accurate within the 500 lb +/-), a three man crew packed the truck and delivered on time. I was concerned, but ultimately the experience was excellent. We prepacked all boxes and color coded rooms with stickers to make things easier as well as ran our own checklist of boxes (Blue 1, Yellow 3, etc). I would do it again...

Very nice, thanks...

Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music
wordsandsounds replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
That's a good record, but not necesarrily representative of him as a player. I remember when his first Verve album came out, Enemies of Energy he said it took so long for that to be picked up and released that he had already moved on from that band conception too. Nonetheless, a good record. If I were to point you at one though, check out Next Step. Also, nice to see you picked up the Diz and Bird like you said you would. The Cinematic is also right up your alley. Enjoy those... -
So can someone recommend a way to go in hearing pre-war Lester... I have the Verve box and the Aladdin recordings but nothing earlier than that. After reading the Mosaic Young/Basie thread I think I am hearing that I should pick up the Basie No. 1 Band box and something else to come up with the same material unless I just want only the Young solos. So what would you recommend me picking up? Thanks in advance.

Indeed I do, but don't age me too much. Thread is here minus my screenshots from a photobucket account I don't even think I have access to anymore... The reason, for me, it takes a while is because I like to input everything and also you have to approach how you are going to list things. Let's just say composers for instance, common name, born name, include age, etc.... That is also the beauty of this program, I can do a simple search and return all the tracks written by x or all my versions of a certain song. Say I want to know something as absurd as how many albums I have that a recorder is played on... But really I love it for browsing and rediscovery... Also, I really love looking at my albums so throughly going through the liners and composers... And a note, even if you don't want to do all this, that's fine. Just use cddb and it is still pretty useful.

SPOT ON! and a lovely database - now if only i can find a program for windows that is user friendly!! It would seem Catraxx is the thing for you. I love this program, but it takes time to input everything.

Government Check & Mosaic
wordsandsounds replied to Roundsound's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
A tax rebate to rescue the economy from recession. ... or a payoff from the government to stop talking about it, depending on how you look at it. You know what's really funny about this, they could just levee the cut against our current taxes, but everyone knows then people wouldn't spend it. So they cut a check instead... If I had money for a set, that Chu Berry would be mine! -
do guys know about EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES?
wordsandsounds replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Audio Talk
I have this same drive and my XP computer really doesn't like it. I'm constantly getting this "device write failed" error message, when it happens the drive stops responding and the only way to get it working again is to un-install the device and re-install. I have yet to find any fixes that work for this problem. It's evidently something that happens with USB 2.0 (so the problem isn't the drive itself). It's very random, sometimes it will work for weeks without the error...then there are other days where I'm re-installing the drive 10 times in a day. You too eh? I have had this drive for less than six months and finally threw my hands up last week concerning this drive. Seagate claims no repsonsibility, and if you do a simple search about the Free Agent drives you will find hundreds (no joke) of returns of people with the same issue. After reading trhough a ton of these various forums, reviews, etc there are two solutions... Both uphold that the hd itself is a great disk drive but that there is an issue with the housing. One fix (I am trying tomorrow) is to seperate the bottom and remove the connector for the light (do a simple search for better instructions). The other is to remove the entire drive and place it in a new housing. My two year old 160gig externals from Seagate are awesome but the Freeagent drive has been a disaster.... -
Most definetly...

I understand Seeline, I just know that I and numerous people tried to bridge a gap here and so, personally, not talking about it (so much better than email or pm) seems like these types of efforts are for naught. Nonetheless, it was you who were banned so I completely understand your point. As far as the Musician Forumm that is a completely different topic...

Your entire post is worth reading, and I particularly agree with your perception of Mike R. I personally have not had an issue with Kelman, but I understand that numerous people have over minor issues, but some of his own comments on the subject were of value - especially those concerning Seeline/Clave laying low. I say this, as I have in email to Clave, because her initial posts were directed at the future of the board based on actions such as her banning. When it turned personal is when everything went awry imo (no matter who started it, there is always a high road). If the point of the intial posts were concerning the future of the board that conversation has finally arrived, so let's discuss that point. I also spoke with Mike Ricci on the phone on Wednesday for a little over half an hour. And while I don't particularly agree wth some of his desicions (eg Lonson, Clave) I also agree that I don't know what has gone on behind the scenes. One point of contention that either Mike is adding on now or Clave has failed to point out from the beginning (even in emails to others and myself) is the point of being banned only for a week. My primary offering to Mike was that a new regime should be instilled at the forum. Kelman and Mike want out of moderation so let's move them out and introduce a new set of governers and re-establish the rules (including the staus of the musician forums). Personally I feel the squeaky wheels have gotten the grease here. If people were complaining in the musician forums that others were detracting from conversation I think this is laughable (especially JayNorem who I see go offtopic all day posts as if he is only interested in the theory behind chord resolutions). As a side note, Mike said he didn't know anything about the Blues thread... As Eula/Sandra pointed out over at AAJ it's a shame that people who complain over minor things appear to have been satiated by actions that were not warranted while adults and and those who understand interpersonal communication (as well as the horrible shortcomings of purely textual communication) do not bother moderators when someone flames. Often in these cases those flaming even realize how dumb they are acting later on. If, as Mike says, he and mods have historically recieved a lot of communication concerning a member, then ideally the conversation would be looked at and handled from there. Instead, under the pressure of current projects and the number of responses, I think a simple lapse had begun and then the flames grew from there... I have had acocunts at both boards for some time now, I have not been posting for about two weeks at all really though becuase I don't think I should really care either way. Both boards will survive either way. People come and people go. Sometimes they return... Ellen, I would say this: Mike has offered to talk (and I and others have asked him for that), don't refuse him now as I think some people who have gone to bat for you will feel that you did not uphold your end of the bargain since that is what you have been calling for all along. As far as not responding to your calls for a conversation, two things: 1) he was moving, etc. 2) many have asked that he change his mind and discuss things with you... You don't have to return to AAJ, but at least that way people knows that parties tried and people can go from there... Mike

Mine are all black and have no issue with staying clean and lean looking. Like owning a black car, you just have to dust/wash it somewhat regularly. Shane, you will dig the cabinets. But have a friend help you move them!

Here is a second for taking the plunge (though admittedly they have raised their prices since I last purchased one). My oldest is nearing-- what eight years-- and has been fantastic. No cosmetic issues, locks still work, and absolutely no complaints outside of the cost for me to buy my dearly needed fourth cabinet. The only possible issue I have ever been concerened with is the total weight in one specific area (I live on the third floor of an appartment) so I have always placed them in the most secure area of the apt (at least I hope!). It would suck seeing the floor bend beneath the weght. Superb cabinets. Make sure to order the row dividers as well to keep it looking crisp and clean. ---- Edit after reading the linked old thread: If people are concerned about the floor space or size of these cabinets, I find it almost laughable that some people find fault with the can-am cabinets. I house over 2000 albums in a space of 37-3/4" Wide by 55-1/2" High by 20" Deep. Before I had rack after rack of cds in various locations. And If I was to put up shelves along my wall, nothing else would occupy any wall space. Besides, I perfer a clean, organized, look. I find I am getting neater and neater as I get older.

Just found mine in the mail. Weekend is looking good.

Peggy Lee's stuff on Spool is the real deal compared to that Douglas release in my opinion. I'm surprised no one has come up with Erik Friedlander yet. Whether as a sideman or solo he is really inventive. Check him with Ehrlich's Dark Woods Ensemble such as Douglas' Parallel Worlds, Five, or Zorn's Bar Kokhba sextet and String Trio Myra Melford's Above Blue and Same River Twice or even with Fred Hersch like on Forward Motion... Then there are his releases: ... Among others... There are some others as well such as Tomas Ulrich (from Ben Allison to Dom Minasi).

I sold quite a few in my previous job. Not to say anyone was a hi-fi man but I heard good things about it from customers I knew who purchased it with no problems of interference or anything (though this is always a potential issue). I have thought about picking one of these up as well, but ulitamtely I have an old laptop hooked up to some external hds and my stereo so everything is piped that way using a pcmia sound card (nothing fancy, just a 50 buck soundblaster card). Cheaper than the Roku.

I called this morning. Apparently they were waiting on the Blakey which had arrived and shipments were going out today I have been told.
