Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
reg replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
a few i just can't get into are Jackie mclean's Bluesnik, freddie redd's Redd's Blues and kenny dorham's Whistle Stop. not saying they are bad albums it's just they don't do much for me. i like hank's Thinking of Home and the don wilkerson's set though. big fan of freddie roach's Good Move. -
Album of the week: The Quintet - At Massey Hall
reg replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
don't know if someone has posted this already but BBC radio 3 are doing a program about the Massey hall concert this friday. should be able to listen online for a week after. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/jazzlegends.shtml -
i was thinking about getting a Getz boxset for the stuff he did with horace silver. i've no CD's by Getz. which out of The Complete Roost Recordings boxset or Proper boxset do folk think is the one to go for. like i said i'm mainly interested in this for horace silver. thanks

thanks for everyone's replies. i picked up The Spoiler today. played it through a couple of times and really like it. nice version of Sunny, had me humming along much to the annoyance of Mrs reg this reminded me a bit of introducing Duke Pearson's Big Band.
-
Charlie Parker boxset from Proper records (hell of a lot of music to take in on this one) Lou Donaldson - Good Gracious (good but i think i like The Natural Soul a little better) Chick Corea - Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (got this after hearing the Complete IS sessions)

funny but the Fopp round my way has both JuJu and Dialoque and neither have RE on them and the JuJu is/was dodgy cos i bought it and took it back. i've stopped asking to look at the back of the discs now as i think the shop folk think i'm a bit of a nutter.
-
i've decided it's time to get a few more of Mr Turrentine's albums. i have Sugar and Hustlin' (which is fanastic). also love him on Midnight Blue and Back at the Chicken Shack. the ones i've got my eye on (mainly cos i've seen them in the shop) are Complete Blue Hour Sessions Up at Minton's Easy Walker The Spoiler Rough 'n' Tumble are these worth a look and is there any i need to get straight away due to their greatness or any that can wait due to their not so greatness ?

sorry about this thread, i know it's been done to death. could anyone in the UK tell me if they have ever seen these two in the shops with the RE (or something like that) on the disc to show its a good disc. i've given up on finding a good one in the shops round my way. was the RE just put on the US discs? does anyone know of a place online in the UK that i could order these from and definitely get good discs? thanks

here's my 5 favorites. kind of tricky to choose Donald Byrd/Doug Watkins – Transition Sessions Lee Morgan - Infinity Clifford Jordan – Cliff Craft Art Blakey - Africane Horace Silver – Further Explorations by Horace Silver
-
i went for Idle Moments from the poll but i think i like Green Street just a little better
-
just bought Kung Fu Chaos for the Xbox last week. great game which uses Lalo Schifrin's Enter the Dragon soundtrack. any other jazz been used in other games?
-
close between Maiden Voyage, Inventions and Dimensions (love the cover photo) and Empyrean Isles but i going for Maiden Voyage
-
hard choice this one but Adam's Apple gets my vote. love the playing by all and some great tunes.

reg replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
i got the dizzy and the blakey ones a bit ago. really good sound quality on both. £5.99 is a good price. might have to have a look for that cannonball 2CD set. thanks for the info. -
Your Favorite Not-Originally Issued Blue Note
reg replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
not heard all of these but of the ones i have Hank Mobley's Thinking of Home gets my vote. love the first tune on it and like hank with woody shaw up front. -
sorry i meant nov 25th. half asleep when typing same tracks as Mnytime's post from above about the carnegie hall concert. in alyn shipton's 'Groovin' high' there's a quote from Schifrin - "My only sadness is that when the original album was released of what had actually been a three hour concert, they chopped off the last movement of 'Tunisian Fantasy'." wonder if they recorded all 3 hours. sure would make a nice box set dizzy did 'Tocatta' on Ralph Gleason's Jazz Casual DVD from january 17,1961.
-
i just love the Gillespiana and Carnegie hall concert CD from Verve. can anyone tell me if the live Gillespiana suite from that concert is available on CD? or anything else other than the 5 tunes on this CD. i have the live recording of Gillespiana from salle pleyel nov 24th 1960 which is great. did dizzy record this any more times? how do folk rate the Gillespiana suite compared to dizzy's other stuff?
-
i agree about lee's last album. talk about always leave them wanting more.
-
forgot all about tina brooks. listening to 'minor move' makes me think about whether brook's recording career would have been longer if he had become a jazz messenger ? i think he could have been a great addition.
-
Yeah, I'd say so. I know had lots of bits and pieces of 40s Dizzy before I bought this box, but the box gives me all I want. I actually think it's a pretty exhilirating collection. In general the proper boxes are very good - I don't think I've been disappointed yet. I think the Lester Young won the Jazz Journal record of the year a few years back. I wonder if they're too good to be true, but that's about it. Simon Weil thanks Simon. that's just what i was hoping someone would say. guess a trip to the shops this afternoon is now needed

i was just having a little think to myself who was best with lee up front. i always liked the stuff lee did with jackie mclean (Tom Cat, Infinity, etc) over his albums with shorter or mobley. but over the last week i've been giving his later recordings with bennie maupin a listen. these are good. Live at the Lighthouse and Taru i like and the bonus tracks from andrew hill - Lift every Voice. so maybe maupin is my favourite sideman for lee, for today anyway whats other folk think?
-
kenny drew never did much for me until i got recently both tina brooks - the wait game and jackie mclean - jackie's bag. he has grow on me a lot with these two. think i go listen to the 3 you mention again to see if i like him any better now on these. though bluesnik is not one of my favourite mclean albums. one flight up is a fantastic CD. great tunes and gordan and byrd sound a perfect pair. did they record any more stuff together?
-
i've no pre 50's dizzy. would getting the dizzy proper box set be a good way to start?

Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
reg replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
i like this one. got it on the same day as jackie's bag and hub cap and i seem to have played this the most. not one of byrds very best but worth a listen or three. gets a B off me -
if you have not see it, the art blakey and the jazz messengers video from london 1965 is well worth finding. line up is Lee Morgan(tp)John GIlmore(ts)John Hicks(p)Victor Sproles(b)Art Blakey(d). some nice playing by hicks and everyone else
