  1. does anyone know if horace has ever thought of doing a book?
  2. since reading about this album in the penguin guide to jazz on CD i've been on the look out for it. such a odd line-up, shepp, art ensemble, sunny murray and hank mobley. yesterday i found a copy in the shops, very excited indeed the CD is a release by Charly records. 2 albums, yasmina and poem for malcolm on one CD (sound is OK). this is my first shepp album and after a few plays i really like it. a few questions what do people think of hank's playing on these albums (i like it)? also i notice that these were recorded a few weeks after hank's the flip in paris. i see hank, philly joe jones and vince benedetti appear on both shepp's and hank's albums. were these 3 part of a working band over in paris at the time. any info would be good. apart from yasmina, poem for malcolm and the flip did hank record any more stuff over there? charly seems to have released a few of this 2 album CDs. are the others worth getting and is the license OK? 4. noticed that for people like me who are toying with the idea of getting the Tristano set and can't make up their minds, BBC radio 3 are doing Lennie Tristano on Jazz Legends this friday 16.00 - 17.00. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/jazzlegends.shtml this should be available online to listen to for a week after friday.
  5. another for the Navarro box
  6. this is also my first go at buying from the US. i went for 2 at a time from CD Universe to avoid duties. worked out to be about £10.50 per CD. which is great compared to £14.99 in the shops round my way. still a bit worried about orderiing from so far away in case i get a bad disc. i got the new conns from CD Universe but also went for dialogue as i've never been able to find a corrected disc here in the shops in scotland. i figured that i had a good chance that the dialogue CDs from CD Universe must be the good ones by now. came last week and it's a bad disc. sent a couple of emails off to bluenote and got this reply not so easy to return to CD Universe from here. never mind, still a great CD as are the new conns. mother ship is the pick of them for me.
  7. just got mother ship and the flip. mother ship is as good as i hoped it would be. can't make up my mind on the flip yet. what does people think about hank's playing on this one. he sounds quite quiet?

  10. the spoiler is one of my favourite Mr T albums. if you like stan you will like this one. good line up on it as well (not that there is much solo space for anyone else).
  11. here's the link Complete list of Blue Note "Conns"??? i've got 33 of them. can't wait till Oct
  12. thanks for the reply. i was thinking about getting 4 CDs from CDUniverse. cost $51 (approx £30).
  13. i'm not to keen on buying the new RVGs here in the UK because of the copy controlled and sound quality thing. so i'm thinking about buying them online from CDUniverse.com, having only bought CDs from UK sites before i was wondering if there were any charges i should know about? for example, CD Universe has jackies mclean's let freedow ring for $8.39, with shipping ($6.99) and would make it $15.38 with is about £9.70. this seems pretty cheep me thinks. is that all i pay or are there any import duties and stuff like that to pay? does it depend on the amount of CDs you get at any one time? thanks

    Aug 5th RVGs

anyone else picked these up today? i went for indestructible and grantstand as i've got the others. the sound seems pretty good on both. i'm liking the blakey one a lot. the cover design is one of my favourites. i'm thinking about getting the horace one as it's got 4 extra tracks than the tocj version i've got. worth the upgrade ?
  17. Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers then Dexter Gordan - A Swingin' Affair Duke Pearson - Wahoo Grachan Moncur III - Evolution Art Blakey - At The Jazz Corner Of The World

    Sep RVGs

might as well have a poll for these just so they dont feel left out all five look good. Let Freedom Ring gets my vote as i've been meaning to get this for a while. probably pick up The Scene Changes. i've got the others but a RVG of Adam's Apple is tempting as it's my favourite Shorter album.

Indestructible and Grantstand are the two i've not got. Indestructible gets my vote. nice set of rvgs. One Man in Paris is very good, worth it just for Dexter's solo on A Night in Tunisia

  24. thanks for the replies folks i see that on amazon.co.uk Tomorrow Is the Question! is stated for release on monday (link) i wonder if this is just the same as the 1995 ojc?
  25. i'm reading "the freedom principle" by John Litweiler at the moment. about half way through and so far i'm really enjoying it. my favourite line in the book is where he talks about "minor intrusion" by mingus - the performance on the whole suggests elephants slowly bleeding to death. i still can't figure out if this is a good or bad thing anyway reading this book makes me think i need some Ornette Coleman CDs as i have the sum total of none at the moment. a quick look on amazon shows a few different reissues. can anyone tell me what's the newest reissues (best sound quality?) for any of the following. thanks The Shape of Jazz to Come Free Jazz This Is Our Music Change of the Century Something Else Tomorrow Is the Question some of these seem to be available by Warner Jazz , Atlantic and Rhino, all a bit confusing.
