  1. Hey Chris, When's your new Bessie book due out? Or Have I missed it again?
  2. Hi Clint: I too , post over here as well as JC and yes, I do enjoy the fact that it seems the overall atmosphere in general is a bit more copacetic. Flaming and bad demeanor are a part and parcel of the i/net ..and I admit to losing my cool as well on various occasions, but music seems to be more of a focus over here. I too think Lois ocaasionally gets to get a bit weird, but basically I love her, and she's helped me a lot with my website over there. BTW: Danny D HAS posted over here on various occasions and to the best of my knowledge, is still deemed acceptable . Maybe you and I can convince him to show up more often ( being funny and knowledgeable , and bagging the miscogynous b*****t! Phil, I think our buddy was kicked here. Too bad, that guy has forgotten more about jazz than most of us will ever know. Plus we've experienced his generosity and in most cases, have no problem with his writing. And we always hear from him about the newest residents in Vermont.
  3. I haven't posted here is a while but this thread caught my interest. I think that many of you hit the nail on the head that flaming is just part of the net. It will always be there and probably gets out of hand opnce in a while. I regularly post on JC and have a lot of friends there, many of whom I see here. There are just a few individuals who seem to need to exercise what I can only see as very immature behaviour, regardless of their age. I think Lois is overreacting. I hope she chills out.
  4. The 10th Annual West Coast Jazz Party at the Irvine Mariott, Irvine, CA over Labor Day weekend. Three days of solid straight-ahead jazz. www.westcoastjazzparty.com I never miss it!
  5. Just don't hire Forest Whittaker to play Brownie - he sucked as Bird. Or Jim Carrey for that matter.
  6. Without a doubty Betty Roche sang the hippest version of "A-Train" ever recorded. "Opp bop a shoobe do, a oop bop a shoobie do. . ." But no other band ever had boy singers the equal of Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams.
  7. Horace is not the lyricist that Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter or Larry Hart were but I think many of his songs make their point, especially when sung by Jon Hendricks or Andy Bey.
  8. Count me in the minority but I've always enjoyed the Sands set although the rap does get a little stale after several hundred listenings. For me OBE's Capitol studio sessions were the pinnacle of his art especially "Songs For Swingin' Lovers," "Wee Small Hours" and "Come Dance With Me." The Australian performance with Red Norvo also rates pretty highly with moi.
  9. Danny D’Imperio’s Big Band Bloviation, Vol. 2 Rompin’ Records RRCD-048 Following his excellent first big band disc with more big band bop featuring “special guest performers” Danny D’Imperio has another winner. Big Band Bloviation, Vol. 2 has such DEEP stalwarts as Gary Pribek (IMHO one of the best alto players around), Chris Persad, Joe Magnarelli, John Mosca, Ralph Lalama, Peter Mack and John Rhode who are joined by Barry Harris, Lew Tabackin, Peter Bernstein, Dennis Dotson, Eric Alexander, Gary Smulyan (notice all the VV Band players) and others. This is straight ahead jazz with lots of solo space to the featured players. Lew Tabackin muscles his way through “Sweet Georgia Upside Down” to great effect. His distinctive style and drive are out there throughout. I can just visualize Lew doing his little dance as he plays. Danny’s drumming adds just the right accents. Barry Harris is featured on bop anthem “Groovin High” in a Rob McConnell arrangement along with Magnarelli and Pribek. This is ear candy for us beboppers. Lee Morgan’s gorgeous “Ceora” features Peter Bernstein and Eric Alexander and some superb section work, especially the ‘bones. I enjoyed every cut on the cd but those three really caught my attention. The liner notes by Steve Groebner are “R” rated and confirm that the Deepster has always been that way. D’Imperio also has his say, most affectingly about the cover photo. No, I’m not a paid flack for the Little Drummer Boy but he does send me discs and heaps abuse on me from time to time.
  10. You see, this daylite savings time thing is so the kids on the farms can get home and help their folks with the harvest to support the war effort.
  11. I don't know about the other thread but IMHO Hank Mancini is one of the best song writers of the last 50 years, along with Jobim and Johnny Mandel.
  12. I said it before and I'll say it again. Andy Bey is, IMHO, the best male jazz singer around today and his "American Song" disc is the best vocal record I've heard in a long time.
  13. Andy Bey's "American Song" - the best jazz vocal album in years!
  14. I like the new look. I haven't had any problems running it and it's very fast. Kudos to Mone.
  15. I knew Chuck, over the years I spent some good times with him at jazz joints and festivals. Besides being a great radio personality, he was a fine gentleman with a great sense of humor. The last time I saw Chuck was on the Harbor jazz cruise at lat year's West Coast Jazz Party. I stoofd with Chuck on the aft deck, swapped stories and discussed LDB's Bloviation band disc, which Chuck liked a lot.
  16. I am sorry that LDB has again fouled his nest and obviously offended even those who were willing to tolerate his outrageous posts. Too bad, the guy is a very talented writer and musician. I'll miss his posts, many of which gave me a laugh. I am reminded of a former friend who I liked very much. He was brilliant, witty and very talented but at some time in almost every one of his relationships he would pull some stunt or say things that would completely alienate the friend. His did this ONCE to my wife and the motherfucker was history.
  17. I get back from Mexico and the endless LDB thread is no more. What happened whilst I was basking on the beach? Has our boy been booted? Has he abandoned uis for more friendly climes? What gives? Por favor.
  18. I'm outta here until Feb. 26th. Zihuatanejo beconds. Try to keep this thread going folks. CLiff notes would be appreciated.
  19. CLIT(ORIS), If you wanna hear something really hip pick up the Manhattan Transfer's "VOCALESE" recording and check out the Jon Hendricks lyrics to Clifford Brown's solo on JOY SPRING. Goin' out of Brownie's solo Janice sings: "What was it from Macbeth?" 'Life's but a walking shadow, a player poor that struts and frets upon the stage and's seen no more ...a tale that truly has an idiotic ring that's full of lotsa sound and fury signyfying nothing...' 'that's right, signyfying nothing, I'll repeat it! - nothing, don't forget it - nothing ...... and that's the reason for that spring of joy that the Father put inside of every single girl and boy.' Of course Hendricks paraphrased a bit but if you listen to those words with what Brownie played you'll see the corrolation between genius. Is that funny enough for ya?? YUK IT UP!!....DUH!! DEEP (I intend to be so fucked up tonight. I gotta see my urologist on Friday and I know he's gonna wanna run that TV camera tube up my JOHNSON and that WON'T BE FUNNY!!) The tears well up in my eyes from laughing. And for what it's worth that version of Joy Spring is IMHO the best non-LHR vocalese eveer recorded. Hey, LDB, just rememeber if your urologist says it's time for the old prostate feel puts both hands on your shoulders he's may not be doing the normal exam.
  20. Well, LDB, you've failed miserably. Please Clint, show some self restraint. Our thread originator is pursuing a serious path of enlightenment and spirituality. If you laugh, mocking his attempts at finally being at one with the universe, his pursuit of Nirvana is hobbled and progress set back. I know that from time to time, the posts may not reflect his serious intent, may even be construed as humour and even, [gasp] vulgarity. But that is to misunderstand the gargantuan effort being put forth by our formerly irredeemable provocateur. He is moving toward, at great personal cost, a life of tranquility and grace in the Lord. Let us bow our heads, briefly, and include him in our prayers. It's an uphill battle, but, with our encouragement, not an impossible one. As someone much wiser than I once said, "The longest journey starts with a single step." Never has that truism been as apropos. patricia, you are a freakin' saint. Maybe it's me, I find most of Macbeth very funny.
  21. Well, LDB, you've failed miserably.
  22. Thanks Phil and patricia for the reminder of the K*****opolis thread. Too bad the dude never wrote the book.
  23. Well, Brad, perhaps another thread will be started. I have to admit that the sheer volume of this one was amazing. A new poster would have to set time aside to read it and get up to speed, if that was really possible. A FRESH START, by our thread originator would be interesting, but I suspect, like the rest of us, he has a life which demands his occasional attention. A life which is replete with many autos and willing oriental chickies. Long may he squirt.
  24. It appears that this thread has died a quiet death. I shall tell my grandchildren about it when they are old enough and if I live that long. Where shall I send the flowers? Or are donations to a designated charity in order?
  25. People who post from a bunch of IPs obviously have way too much free time.
