  3. Jazzbo, No one wants to listen to a broken record, especially on a new hi-fi. Over the years, you've certainly piqued my interest in decware. Perhaps someday!

I side with Jazz Kat on this one. If you don't like 'top 5' or 'favorites' lists, don't read the thread. Jazz Kat hasn't misrepresented the thread's content. He hasn't lured anyone in here with promises of free Viagra or cheap Japanese Blue Notes. I pick and choose and recommend it highly.
  7. Ike Day indeed. Perhaps it's time to ressurect the old IKE DAY CORNER thread...

I had favorites when I was 16. I have favorites now. I talked about them with friends/bandmates then as I do now. That's what has built/preserved my interest in the music. Sure, it's a second-best to listening, but it helps me listen. And hearing about other peoples' loves helps me broaden my interests. I don't know Jazz Kat, and I don't know his history here or with anyone, but if he wants to post favorites, fine by me. Here are my favorites from when I was 16; they haven't changed much in the intervening decades (many of them): Lester Young Wardell Gray Ben Webster John Coltrane (thru about 1965, at that time) Johnny Griffin (as a tenor player, I was awed by his chops) I appreciated Coleman Hawkins too, but he didn't really grow on me until I was older. Peace (Edited to improve grammar)

No, no. I'm just an old man doin' the old man thing: "Kids these days..." Seriously, just remarking about how Hank has grown in stature. He was once a forgotten/underrated player. Now, belatedly, he's getting some measure of his 'due'. Much of this seems to be the result of an active reissue program at Blue Note/Mosaic. As far as I'm concerned, right on.

Strange. Ten (fifteen?) years ago, I think people would have said Hank who? Now, he's a favorite among the younger set (to the exclusion of Pres and Hawk and Ben). Am I dreaming this, or...?
  11. 25% - One Item. (Pretty good!) Thru 24 April. http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/Borders20...225percent.html
  12. He painted the indelible impression on me as a 19 year-old bass player. Forever 19.
  13. Second.
  14. Actually, in my case, there's a third option: eyes open, but blind to the world. (Not looking, not focusing, not paying attention; just happen to have eyelids physically open, but eyes are non-functional.
  15. If my eyes aren't open, I can't duck the tomatoes. Seriously, I do play with open eyes when not soloing in order to pick up visual cues (fours, out chorus, bass solo, lay out...)

  17. Funny you should mention it. This has been in my car CD player all week. That's a rather long residence by my standards. I'd picked this up at Downtown Music Gallery back in January, but didn't have access to a CD player until recently. It's grown on me quite a bit, especially the standards which are so artfully and refreshingly de- and re-constructed. Goold's approach - short, often repeated phrases - took me a while to warm to. He's not, for the most part, a guy who builds long, flowing, melodic lines. He pokes and jabs. I like the trio format in general and it works here, with a fairly open feel. (I'm not sure Goold's approach would work as well for me with a larger group, though a spare/minimalist pianist who knows how to step out of the way, might be a complement.
  18. I don't know. And, by the rules, I can't Google (or, presumably AllTheWeb or A9...). Arggggh! Doomed to perpetual ignorance. Story of my life.
  19. If it makes you happy, live it up. But rational? I don't see it.
  20. Go West, young man. Bb - proud survivor of Telegraph Ave, 1968-74
  21. I can only laugh at the popular press. This is OLD news.
  22. I've got some Blues streaming my way too... (Haven't caught the show name yet.)
  23. During a late-1970s conversation with Max Roach, he made a passing/distant comment about the incident. I could almost feel his distress. (I'm no psychologist.) I knew better than to ask any questions.
  24. Sorry, Big Al. Didn't see. I'll file these 'wants' somewhere in the back of my feeble mind.
