  1. Yeah, I noticed that LP was later released on CD with a different cover. Can anyone comment on the sound quality of it?
  2. True, we're fortunate to have these tracks as it is. It looks like a worthy disc to have given the material that isn't on the mosaic and the fact that Smithsonian/Folkways is a good label How is this disc in terms of sound quality? In comparison to the mosaic? It seems there are very few releases with his 1920s recordings and that single disc comp certainly looks like a good option
  3. Apologies, you're right I should have been clearer. I meant he didn't appear on record as a soloist until then (relatively late when compared to someone like James P. Johnson). He did record "Fingerbuster" as a solo in 1934, but it wasn't released until later. The "Cubs" small band sessions are indeed wonderful. For anyone looking for a digital release of them, I would recommend this one on Timeless Historical over the Chronogical Classics. It was restored and mastered by John R.T. Davies, which is always a good sign. As for vinyl, I would be interested in hearing how the Ace of Hearts sounds.
  4. I thought this fantastic pianist deserved his own thread, separate from the ones on stride. Seeing as he didn't record as a soloist until nearly 1940, does anyone know the best place to find his recordings, particularly his Commodore recordings?

Great, thanks! Do you know how it compares with this one? It's one I just stumbled across and am reading good things about the sound quality I have the piano rolls well covered by the two CDs released by biograph, but would be interested to hear how the tradition sounds

Where is the best place to find Johnson's 1920's recordings on CD? The mosaic box looks tempting, but I don't quite have the budget for it at the moment
  7. How is the sound quality on this disc? I can see from the liner notes that "reprocessing was accomplished through the use of the Cedar de-clicker" Apologies for the question, as it doesn't really have to do with the mosaic
  8. I'm currently looking for a good cd of his Commodore recordings. Does anyone know how the sound quality is on this one?

How is the sound quality on these discs? I can see from Folkways liner notes that "reprocessing was accomplished through the use of the Cedar de-clicker" and Snowy Mountain Blues is part of Decca's GRP series, which has a reputation for using too much noise reduction
  10. Does anyone know if there are any good sounding King Jazz discs? It seems like one of the few place to find certain material (freddie keppard for instance). I've found some that seem tempting to buy, but wouldn't want to waste the money if they suffer from "edgy" sound
